A Glorious Graduation for the Class of 2016!

The Class of 2016 - the cohort so closely associated with Rutgers 250 since the day they matriculated - had much to celebrate on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at graduation ceremonies in HighPoint Solutions stadium and on the next day at the SEBS convocation at Passion Puddle.

Graduation festivities at the stadium drew national attention as President Barak Obama delivered the commencement address. Especially thrilling: he was the first sitting President of the United States to do so at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Excitement spilled over to Monday when the majority of the 730 SEBS graduates and their families - along with faculty, staff, and well-wishers - filled the grassy areas of Passion Puddle for our own convocation. Photos from the Rutgers commencement are posted on the university website. Visit the SEBS Newsroom for an article and photos about the school convocation.

Food Science Alumni: Meet Us at Emilio's in Chicago

Attention all Rutgers Food Science alumni who live in greater Chicagoland or who will be attending the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Annual Meeting there in July: you are cordially invited by department chair Karl Matthews to attend the popular Rutgers Food Science Alumni Event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at Emilio's Tapas Sol y Nieve Restaurant, 215 E. Ohio Street in downtown Chicago.

In what has become a food science tradition, alumni, faculty, colleagues, and friends of the Department of Food Science meet during the IFT convention each year for cocktails, dinner, and fun and to catch up on what's happening at Rutgers and in the department. They also have the opportunity to honor their fellow alumni who will be receiving awards for leadership, science, and communication, or have been designated for special recognition.

Registration for the dinner is separate from the IFT meeting and is open until July 6. Contact Dr. Matthews at [email protected] or Irene Weston at [email protected] for further information.
It's 4-H County Fair Time Again

It's that time of the year again when New Jersey children of all ages make a beeline to County Fair their county fair. This year Rutgers 250, the celebration of the university's 250th anniversary, will be on display at many of the fairs -- with cut-out figures for photo opportunities and a special tent that recreates the signing of the charter that launched Rutgers on November 10, 1766.

Rutgers Cooperative Extension is the connection between Rutgers and 4-H. In fact, Rutgers University is the headquarters for 4-H Youth Development, a program that touches every county in the state and attracts thousands of young people and volunteers.

So plan on taking in a fair this summer. Visit the 4-H website for a list of fairs and their dates.
