Smiles and Cheers at the 2015 Convocation

2015 Convocation
Dean Rick Ludescher (l) and Executive Dean Bob Goodman flank gonfalonier Sarah Fine.
Passion Puddle was the setting for the 2015 convocation of the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences on Monday, May 18, with 550 graduates walking across the platform to the smiles and cheers of their classmates, families, friends, and professors.

Technically, they already were alumni, having graduated the previous day in High Point Solutions Stadium in a ceremony for all Rutgers seniors from New Brunswick-Piscataway schools. But as emcee Rick Ludescher, dean of academic programs, put it: "Today... is the fun part. Today we call your name and recognize you personally. Most of all, though, we get to tell you all how very proud we are of you."

Of the 700 members of the Class of 2015, an amazing 40 achieved summa cum laude honors, 37 graduated magna cum laude, and 93 were designated cum laude. One of the honorees, Kelly Steitz, graduated first in her class with a four-year grade average of 4.0. For photos of the ceremony, visit the school's Facebook page.
Be on the Lookout for Your Alumni and Friends Magazine

Magazine cover
Making its debut at the school convocation -- and headed toward a mailbox near you -- is the first issue of Explorations, a magazine written for alumni and friends of the school. A joint effort of the Office of Alumni and Community Engagement, the Office of Communications, and the Office of Development, this 28-page four-color publication takes readers to the George H. Cook Campus and encourages them to explore the people, programs, and facilities that make the school great.

Be sure to read the welcome message from Executive Dean Bob Goodman, who is celebrating his 10th anniversary as head of the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. As he says, "Why the name Explorations? It's a reflection of imagination, creativity, investigation, and discovery, which are at the core of what all great universities do." For a preview of the magazine, visit the Publications area of the Discovery website and view it in the handy "page-turner" version.

Tell Us Your Story

One of the features of the new Explorations magazine is a section on alumni stories, spotlighting NBC meteorologist Dylan Dryer (CC '03), Taco Bell's Steve Gomez (CC '01 and GSNB '10), Presidential Management Fellow Zaid Abuhouran (SEBS '12), and renowned geneticist Ralph Brinster (Ag '53). These individuals have been profiled by the Office of Alumni and Community Engagement, along with many other alumni. An index of more than 100 alumni stories and notes appears on the Discovery website and links directly to place in the SEBS Newsroom where the stories and notes reside.

You can be part of this alumni stories project by jotting down some thoughts and memories of your own and sending them to discovery@aesop.rutgers.edu.

County 4-H and Agricultural Fairs Offer Summer Fun

4-H lamb Plan your summer around the 2015 4-H and agricultural fairs that will take place in nearly every county in New Jersey. These family friendly events typically include livestock, pet, and produce exhibits; sewing and crafts; live entertainment; food and refreshment stands; and much more. Some of the fairs feature amusement rides; big name concerts; demolition derbies; tractor pulls; a commercial "avenue;" public information stations; and even fireworks. This year is an election year for the New Jersey Assembly, so politicians are sure to abound as well.

Visit the New Jersey Agricultural Fairs website for information about the fairs. They are listed by location and by date.
