Will You Be in DC on March 3?

Big Ten Reception Banner

Alumni and friends in the Washington, DC, area are invited to the annual Big Ten Ag Alumni Reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at the famous National Press Club just blocks from the White House. This will be Rutgers' third year as a Big Ten host at this popular event, which encourages networking across institutions and a little bit of friendly rivalry as well. The cost is $20 and includes heavy hors d'oeuvres, beverages, takeaways from the Big Ten schools, and a lot of fun. Show your school spirit, and see you there! Register today.

How About Baltimore on March 4?

Underwater glider
Remember RU 27 ("the Scarlet Knight"), the first underwater robotic glider to cross the Atlantic Ocean on an epic journey that gathered crucial ocean data for the Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and a host of others? After spending a year on display at the Smithsonian Institution, RU 27 is now ensconced in the National Aquarium at Baltimore's Inner Harbor.  Alumni and their families from all over the Baltimore/Washington area are invited to "A Knight at the National Aquarium" from 7 to 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. Rutgers scientists and students from Marine and Coastal Sciences will be present to assist guests in hands-on glider demonstrations, to talk about exploring the oceans, and much more. The National Aquarium will be open for private access to most of its displays. Dinner and beverages are included in the registration fee of $25 for adults and $15 for children under 12 - a substantial reduction of the usual entrance fee. Register here

Over the Top: Our Rutgers, Our Future

Campaign logo President Robert Barchi last week sent a congratulatory message to the Rutgers community, announcing the successful completion of the "Our Rutgers, Our Future" campaign, which surpassed its goal of $1 billion - the largest in the university's history - for a total of $1,037,056,700. The campaign closed officially this past December 31. The effort's four priorities were faculty and research, students and learning, campuses and facilities, and university and community programs. All were generously supported by donors. In the months ahead, the university will share specific success stories. In the meantime, President Barchi's letter is posted online.

Big Ten Network Spotlights Seeing Eye Puppy Club

Seeing Eye puppies Among the most heart-warming sights on campus are students going about their day accompanied by a beautiful, rambunctious puppy sporting a green bandana or vest. These are the "puppy raisers" of the Seeing Eye Puppy Raising Club and their young four-legged charges. The club was founded in 2000 on the G.H. Cook Campus. The puppies are specially bred in Chester, N.J., by the Seeing Eye, Inc., a national organization that provides guide dogs for the blind and visually impaired. Puppy raisers take responsibility for the dogs, helping them acclimate to daily life, training them in basic commands, and loving them like crazy. But a video is worth a thousand words, so please take a look at the Big Ten Network's feature on its sports programs this year.

Mark Schapiro In the continuing discussion of climate change, investigative journalist Mark Schapiro will focus on "Carbon Shock: How Climate Change is Reshaping Geo-Politics and Changing the Cost of Everything" at a talk starting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the Cook Student Center. The talk is free and open to the public. Check out complete details and a link to registration.
