All You Want to Know - At the Click of a Mouse

Alumni and friends who want to know the latest about the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station now have four new tools at the touch of a button (or, actually, the click of a mouse).

For the School, there are two publications: "Profiles," with stories about faculty, students and alumni, and the "Admissions Brochure," which provides an overview for prospective students and their families.

On the Experiment Station side, there is the "We Have the State Covered" brochure and the "2012 Annual Report."

And while you are visiting the publications site, check out the "Our Rutgers, Our Future" brochure, with details of our priorities for the current donor campaign.
Save  the Date
For Peter Pringle

Peter Pringle

Last fall, the University was eagerly awaiting  prize-winning author Peter Pringle, who was slated to talk about his latest book, "Experiment Eleven: Dark Secrets Behind the Discovery of a Wonder Drug." But then, Superstorm Sandy happened. The talk was postponed.

The good news is that it is back on again. So mark your calendar for Wednesday, October 2, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m. for the long-awaited appearance by Peter Pringle. More details will be posted on the Discovery Initiative website at the date gets closer.

The Sun Shines on the Puddle
For the Class of 2013 Graduates
2013 Convocation on the Lawn

After a damp, chilly weekend, the sun welcomed the Class of 2013 for convocation ceremonies on Monday, May 20, on the Passion Puddle lawn. Executive Dean Bob Goodman and Dean of Academic Programs Rick Ludescher addressed the graduates. In a class of 576 graduates, an amazing 32 were summa cum laude, including Nora Jean Nealon with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Additionally, there were 46 magna cum laude and 89 cum laude graduates.

One  of the highlights of the celebration was the talk given by Carolina Mueller, representing the Class of 2013. With a degree in Nutritional Sciences and a minor in Sociology, as Dean Ludescher described her: "Her passions lie where sociology and nutrition intersect -- right in the heart of the community." A volunteer in the New Brunswick Farmer's Market, established to bring healthy food to the local community, Carolina's goal is to help make access to healthy food around the world a reality. Her advice to her fellow graduates: "Take with you everything that you learned here at Rutgers, whatever those lessons might have been. Take everything that you learned inside and outside the classroom. Take hold of what you are passionate and enthusiastic about, and go, armed with the confidence that you are ready for the wider world."

Please visit the School's Facebook page for photos of convocation.

Executive Dean Goodman and guests enjoy the Ag Field Day BBQ.
The first "Let's Do Lunch With the Executive Dean," which brought together more than 200 alumni, family members and friends for a barbecue on the lawn of Jameson Quad, was a resounding success and now becomes a "new tradition," with Executive Dean Bob Goodman inviting this year's graduates -- and all alumni -- to join him at next year's Ag Field Day at Rutgers Day on Saturday, April 26.

A slide show of photos from this year's event is live on the Discovery Initiative website. Please take a look. And be sure to mark your calendar for next year.
Rutgers Rising Pays Tribute to Seven
Rutgers Rising Plaque
Very early on the Saturday morning of Reunion and Graduation weekend, 55 members of the School and Experiment Station community gathered to honor six faculty and one student who had passed away in the previous year. The remembrance ceremony took place in the Cook Campus Center's G.H. Cook Room -- an especially appropriate setting as it overlooks the Rising patio where the cast bronze plaques and nameplates memorialize colleagues and friends who have died.

Honored this year were David Fairbrothers, professor of botany and curator of the Chrysler Herbarium; C. Reed Funk, Donald N. Riemer and Cecil C. Still, professors in the Department of Plant Biology and Pathology; Peter John Parks, professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics; David C. Wood, 4-H Youth Development agent in Atlantic County; and Daniel M. Hess, a graduate student in the Department of Nutritional Sciences. Details of their lives and photos from the ceremony appear in the Event Archive of the Discovery Initiative website.
