Into the Ether
Shawn Porter

Shawn Porter's installations are developed through his focus on play, material sensibility, and fabrication. Each work is a sketch manifested in three-dimensional space. The ebb and flow of working with and responding to a variety of materials allows a sketch to gradually present itself, generating works that feel natural, effortless, and enjoyable for both maker and viewer.

THE RESPONSE ISSUE

Happy October! As we get ready to don our most comfortable sweaters, we're focusing on how we acknowledge, react, and respond: how local artists Shawn Porter and Lizze Mttl respond to the materials they are surrounded by; how artist Firelei Bez answered your questions, and what you took away from her art talk and her work; and how you interact with the museum and contemporary art (with a friend, with a beer, with a selfie--we love it all!).

UMOCA and the Utah Brewers Guild Present FLUID ART Autumn 2015

Autumn is here! The time for crunchy leaves, color-changing canyons, and pumpkins is a-brewin'--and let's not forget one of our most anticipated events of the season, #SLCFluidArt!

Last spring, we sipped Epic's light and sour Annex Berliner Weisse while strolling through Adjunct, and we slurped up the foam on Bohemian's Czech Pilsener as we made our way through Panopticon
This fall, we've got six new exhibitions to pair with delectable 4-oz. tastings from 8 local breweries.

"WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR A YOUNG ARTIST?"

"Find authentic ways to generate work that can also be in conversation with the interests of the art field."

When 2015 Catherine Doctorow Prize winner Firelei Bez presented an art talk about her work at UMOCA, we found ourselves impressed and fascinated. Bez's works are distinguished by a stunning and rich visual language, a testimony to the African diaspora and its intertwined cultural histories and narratives. As the artist placed her works into context and answered our questions, we nodded along with the occasional moment of realization: "Oh!"

REACT AND CREATE
Uphill/Both Ways
Lizze Mttl

Local artist Mttl's work is an exploration of and response to material and the spaces within which they reside. Mttl finds materials on streets, in salvage yards, and dumpsters. These materials collect in piles in her studio, enabling a relationship to develop between the objects and her attachment to develop towards the gravity of materials, left to rest or waver.

Hollow Oak Our Palace Is
Kate Ericson & Mel Ziegler

These cocoa mats were produced in response to the displacement of Real Art Ways, an arts organization in Hartford, Connecticut, by the Oak Leaf Development Corporation. Each leaf-shaped mat references Hartford's Charter Oak, which is fabled to have hidden the state's charter from the representatives of King James II, who demanded the dissolution of the colony in 1687.

RE-IMAGINED ART SPACES
Drive, Draw, Discover

We've been talking about our new Art Truck, but now we've seen it in action! Just last week, Education Coordinator Elly Baldwin was able to make a two-hour trip for an overnight Art Truck visit, bringing the work of Mary Toscano to four schools in Helper and Price, Utah!

Relax, React, Reflect

We've re-imagined the museum lobby so that it's more welcoming than ever. Stop by during our open hours to flip through some beautiful art books, chat with a friend before you explore the museum, or reflect on the different exhibitions you've just seen.
UMOCA VIGNETTES
Behind the Scenes

You might not expect it, but UMOCA's Executive Director, Kristian Anderson, is quite the balloon connoisseur! Every so often, he sits down in the Main Gallery to craft balloon hats for Mel Ziegler's installation, "Hold Your Breath," as featured in Grandma's Cupboard.
Museum-goer Snapshots

SLC Comic Con 2015 is over, but Halloween is right around the corner! We had this fabulous group of Comic Con-goers visit the museum for the opening of Patterns of Resistance. (We had to check Harley Quinn's mallet and Scarecrow's scythe, though.)
