As we transition into 2014, UMOCA would like to thank you for your support in 2013 and look back on the past year.
As a small and dedicated staff and Board of Trustees, we have made great progress developing our educational programs, building relationships with other community organizations, and solidifying our position as Utah's premiere contemporary art venue. We are optimistic about our future prospects and look forward to another year of presentations and community service.

do it
Opening Reception: Friday JAN 17, 7-9 PM Cash Bar
Conceived and curated by Hans Ulrich Obristand organized by Independent Curators International (ICI), New York, do it is the longest-running, furthest-reaching exhibition ever to take place. Using written instructions by renowned artists as a point of departure, this exhibition is uniquely site-specific to Utah through the engagement with the community and use of resources available locally. In this way, the exhibition's ongoing presentation is less concerned with notions of reproduction or materiality of the artworks. Rather, do it is about revealing the nuances of human interpretation in its various iterations.
The exhibition has had more than 50 stops worldwide, making it one of the largest compilations of instructed DIY works by renowned contemporary artists.

UMOCA's sponsors: City Weekly, Craft Lake City, and Slug Magazine
Contributors include: KCPW Public Broadcasting, Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, and Taffy Town Gourmet Taffty
The exhibition and the accompanying publication were made possible, in part by grants from the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation, the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation, and with the generous support from Project Perpetual and ICI's International Forum and Board of Trustees.

Trent Harris: Echo Cave
Artist Walkthrough: Friday JAN 17, at 6:30 PM
Opening Reception: Friday JAN 17, 7-9 PM
Trent Harris: Echo Cave is the first retrospective into the creative genius of the Utah cult filmmaker. This exhibition presents drawings, photographs, artists books, and short films that illuminate Harris's process and inimitable style. Internationally renowned for films such as The Beaver Trilogy and Rubin & Ed, Harris demonstrates a lasting influence on underground cinema with his independent filmmaking and visual art practice.
The title of his book, Mondo Utah, alludes to a genre of Italian filmmaking in which pseudo-documentaries of sensationalized and taboo subjects are presented in a cinema-verité style. The word "mondo" also serves as a philosophy that frames Harris's practice. His films often blur the line between documentary and narrative-fiction as a way to engage with notions of the absurd, the bizarre, and the uncanny.

Beginning before the doors open to the public, Stroller Tours are designed to ease concerns associated with talkative children and/or crying babies by providing an exclusive time for museum exploration and tailored, grown-up discussions free of pressure.
Stroller Tours occur on the second Wednesday of each month at 9:30 AM beginning on February 12th. Please RSVP to Jared Steffensen.
