Jennifer West: Salt Crystals Spiral Jetty Dead Sea Five Year FilmL.A. based artist Jennifer West creates "camera-less" films by exposing the unrolled celluloid to a variety of physical agitations. Her process may include soaking it in marinades of cherry antacid, whiskey and bodily fluid as well as damaging the celluloid by dragging, scratching and skateboarding across it. The result of every film is an intoxicating visual array of color, patterns and collages that shift between two visual methods of story telling. In this particular piece, West submerged the celluloid in both the Dead Sea and the waters near the Spiral Jetty and has allowed the saline to crystallize on the surface of the film creating windows to the abstract narrative below. Sticky Fingers Make Monster Bees
Multicolored pipe cleaners, glue, fuzzy balls and happy children were the remnants of June's Utah Arts Festival in Library Square. The UMOCA tent was filled to the brim with helping volunteers and children of all ages eagerly creating their very own "monster bees."
The success is all thanks to our volunteers and staff. But especially to our very own Interim Director Maggie Willis, who for the past eight years, has been heading up the creation of the themes of the Children's Art Yard at the Utah Arts Festival.
