Celebrating Buddha's Birthday on Sunday, April 13th, 2014.
Deck the halls!
'tis the season of Buddha's Birth!

Throughout the world, Buddhists are celebrating the anniversary of the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, the Sage of the Sakya Clan, who would become known as Buddha, the Enlightened One.  We celebrated on April 13th according to the Japanese calendar which links Buddha's birthday with the Cherry Blossom Festival in April.  Other temples celebrate Vesak (honoring the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing, all-in-one), and the scheduling of events is staggered through the end of May, so that monks and laypeople may visit other temples and make pilgrimage.

It's a good time to see what other temples and centers are doing, to meet new people, try new practices (and foods!), and to enjoy the company of friends on the path.

Roshi and Su co will be attending a celebration that promises to be among the more spectacular - the organizers expect thousands to attend! You could be there, too.

   - The Very Venerable
                 T.T. Thích Minh Nhat

Many of us want to reach out and help others.

I was touched by the comments of Venerable Wuling, an American nun practicing in Australia.  I want to share her insight as a guide to doing this. She said,

Before we can help, we need to understand.
Before we can understand, we need to listen.
Before we can listen, we need to be quiet,

Be aware that the mind of Compassion does not know anger or judgement; in karuna, as in metta, there is no right or wrong, no you or me -- only the wish that all beings are happy.

May all be well and happy, peaceful and free from suffering.
