Buddha's Birthday Sunday, April 13th 11:00 a.m. thru lunch
You are invited to join us as we celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Siddahartha Gautama, Sakyamuni Buddha. We joyously celebrate this holiday according to the Japanese calendar in April when the weather is (reasonably) temperate, so that we can celebrate again at Vesak/Vaishaka (the triple birth/enlightenment/passing anniversay) in May with the rest of the Buddhist world, visiting our friends at their various temples in Southern California.

Website FYI:
As you may have noticed, we've encountered a series of problems with our website this Winter and Spring. The latest hurdle involved a software update that prevented us from adding to or updating DesertZenCenter.org over several weeks. Apologies to those missing their Dharma talk "fix."
As of today, we believe we have a solution. The sad part is that we had to roll back to postings as of mid-January of this year. This means the calendar is incomplete as of this newsletter and we're going to have to wrangle some data, photos and postings from where they wander in Su co's computer. We will try to fill it in and update everything ASAP.
Regarding the Dharma talks, which we post in mp3 format using Flash (Adobe Software): For those of you lamenting your inability to access the talks via an Apple device such as an iPhone or iPad, Su co suggests that you consider purchasing the Photon browser, which enables Flash* for iOS and other Apple products. While there are a variety of free workarounds (which don't seem to be very intuitive), Photon seems to be the easiest and we will post links as we slog through the other tasks to bring the website back to speed.
Thanks for your patience. If you find a problem with the website's function, please email Su co at TamHuongDZC@yahoo.com and we'll add it to the list!

*This has been an ongoing problem, with no Apple/Adobe(Flash) solution in sight.

Plan ahead for our 7 day, July 7-13th,
Life at the Temple Sesshin
This is a type of training retreat that Roshi has held when a number of monks studying with him have been unable to live with him at DZC.
Although this sesshin is being designed for those on the monk path, it is open to sincere laypeople who RSVP. It should be a great experience on a number of levels and a great opportunity to concentrate on our practice.
Come without expectations, but plan to stay at the temple and be prepared to put forth the effort of a traditional meditation Sesshin, crossed with an "elongated" teaching Day at the Temple -- all contained within the structure of our day-to-day work at Desert Zen Center. Su co predicts (but she has no special powers): lots of meditation (sitting/walking/working) and chanting, practice in ceremony, instrumentation and "monk stuff," sutra study and discussion classes... and as for work? gardening, a little cooking, lots of cleaning, some construction, good eating and preparation for a large and wonderful party celebration. More details in May and June. Plan to arrive on Sunday, July 6th, spend the night, and hit the ground... sitting (walking, chanting, as well as everything else). As a finale, join us for our public Obon/Vulan/Ullambana (Festival of the Hungry Ghosts) ceremony on Sunday, July 13th, beginning at 11:00 a.m. and lasting through lunch and entertainment.
Monk or layperson,
you must
RSVP* to Roshi ASAP.
We have a number of confirmed participants, including contingents from out-of-state and, while we have a nice chunk of desert and various buildings with space for bedrolls, we will be allocating accommodations well ahead of the Sesshin.
Take the next step in your practice.
