Autumn at the Desert Zen Center
"Blazing sky" photos in this issue were taken during the first week of October at 6 a.m., just before the meditation period. If only we could include the sounds, the wind and the smell of creosote damped by morning dew. You'll just have to visit for yourself. |

All I Teach is Loving Kindness...
- The Very Venerable T.T. Thích Minh Nhat
I have been reading the works of Venerable Wuling, an American Buddhist nun. In her book, Path to Peace, there are a few quotes that got me thinking about myself and the whole subject of giving and wanting to help others. One quote was, "The generous person gives not just what they have but who they are."
In my many years as a prison chaplain I have come to realize that the most important thing I can do is just be there for somebody. Just as water can erode the hardest stone hardest stone, caring can melt the coldest heart.
The other piece which struck me was, "Before we can help, we need to understand. Before we can understand we need to listen. Before we can listen we need to be quiet."
When I read this I thought of the goal of our Temple which is to teach meditation which opens the door to Sacred Silence and understanding. ________________________________

When you visit, you may notice that we've added a flagpole.
Look for the Buddhist Flag, located on the east side of the campus, by the garden and the adobe enclosure at the side entry gate from Turtle Rock .
Our thanks to David and Ryan, who donated the materials, designed & constructed the flagpole, dug the hole in the hard, hard, hard ground, and kept us mightily amused for a morning. |
