Blanchet Calcite Pouilly-Fume
Blanchet 2014 Calcite Pouilly-Fum
Bright Sauvignon Blanc as invigorating as the aphrodisiacs with which this wine pairs so well -this Pouilly Fum is perfect with oysters, scallops or any starters on which one might squeeze a lemon. Riper and richer than ever before, this is once again sensational Sauvignon Blanc of a mineral variety that earns its name Calcite as a nod to its calcium rich limestone soils that inspires a steely and striking white.

Imagine ripening the most bracing yet polished Sauvignon Blanc clones to a resonant hum but in the citrusy mineral slopes of Chablis; this is in fact the right bank of the Loire but it is fragrant of all those eau d'orange vert liquor sort of scents with exotic floral high notes but kept nervy by a mouthwatering acidity, persistent citrus, and a structure that is both burnished but edgy -a wine of great dimension less of the soprano of last vintage and more of a counter tenor with a richer more clarinet woodwind charm in comparison to last year's silver flute. A marvel every year, this vintage could be the sort of segue Sauvignon Blanc fans of other lands might need to lure them from Bordeaux or Napa and onto the banks of the Loire and these remarkable winegrowers the Blanchets -a devoted couple that does everything together. A treat with a nettle green lift on the finish. Seek this out for a split pea and mint soup. | Regular retail: $20.99

Baron de Seillac Brut Rose
Baron de Seillac Brut Ros
What captures Valentine's more than a fresh and rosy ros? One that also sparkles and goes straight to one's head! Moreover: writing as we smack our extremely happy lips, we ask who wouldn't love more Provenal sparkling wine in their lives? This rose is a great follow through to Baron de Seillac's Blanc de Blancs' 1-2 punch proving Laurent Breban makes top notch sparkling wine. 100% Grenache lends a fresh, floral fragrance and a dry palate replete with white cherries, a faint mandarin acidity, and a fine mousse. At 11.5% alcohol, this wine is a dreamy option as a ready aperitif, a delightful bruncheon wine, or a terrific vin de soif! Buy it by the case and keep one in the ice box at all times. Baron de Seillac is a shining example that shows sparkling wine should be a daily affair -adding joy and panache to each and every day not least Valentine's. | Regular retail: $12.99

El Nido Clio_ Jumilla
Clio 2013 Monastrell, Jumilla
Picture the steamy south of Spain's Jumilla region where Bodegas El Nido makes compact reds of dense concentration. Limestone dominates this plateau of mixed sandy soil that rises to 2,300 to 2,400 feet. Ancient vine roots love to stretching their toes through these old parcels with 30 acres of slow growing Cabernet Sauvignon and 80 acres of Monastrell, Mourvdre, whose vines are nearly 100 years old. 70% Monastrell and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, these are low yielding vines of potent clusters -so rich they say the juice downright requires 24 months in French and American oak. In addition to taming the tannins these lend deeper complexity still.  Enjoy a nose of pain grille, underbrush, brier, mineral, blueberry, and blackberry fruit leading to a plush, opulent wine with great density, savory flavors, and a lengthy finish. Clio is a wine that truly, madly, deeply belongs with all foods ranging from rice or pasta, vegetables, mushroom, stewed meat, sausage, pork, roast meat, red and/or white meat with sauces, grilled meat, and even mild to medium cheeses. This wine is ready for anything. | Regular retail: $43.99
POP UP PRICE: $ 3 4 . 9 9

Li Veli_s roll in the hay
Li Veli 2014 Passamante
Beyond all its charms as deep red from Salice Salentino, Passamante is also especially apropos for Valentine's for the story behind it. The big vineyard of Negroamaro, this fragrant local red grape variety, located next to Masseria Li Veli, surrounded by a perimeter of big pine trees, is just beside a forest called "Passamante". The reason for this name is that in the past, people who wanted to "have a tumble in the hay" with their lover, especially if not allowed, used to pass by this grove. As a consequence, this started to be considered The Forest of Lovers and took on this name from the words "Pass" (to pass) and "Amante" (lover)... The peculiar scent of the vegetation in this maquis is perfectly in harmony with the organoleptic properties of the wine. Dense ruby red with a purplish rim, it is immediately intense on the nose with marked aromas of ripe and fleshy red fruits, notably cherries followed by spicy notes of cinnamon and nutmeg; in the mouth it is full, powerful, smooth and very long, with a well defined acid streak which makes it fresh and pleasing. | Regular retail: $15.99

Valentin Cabernet Sauvignon
Valentin Bianchi 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon AND
Valentin Bianchi 2013 Malbec
Here is an Argentine pair with a fitting name for the holiday that each stand alone on their own merit but make such a lovely couple -especially with a bit of flesh off the grill. The Cabernet Sauvignon is reminiscent of spicy aromas, as well as cassis and berry notes enhanced by a pleasing, soft berry-vanilla finish. The Malbec boasts a nose filled with ripe plum, cherries, hints of vanilla and coffee. The flavors mimic the aromas, with a massive, yet soft and silky, mouthfeel, and lush, long finish. It is the perfect expression of the highly-praised Malbec grape -the national variety grown in Argentina.

Valentin Malbec
Both varieties come from the Doa Elsa Estate, situated in Ram Cada, San Rafael, Mendoza at 2460 feet  above sea level. Among the coolest areas of San Rafael, the sandy calcareous soil of alluvial origins yields expressive fruit which then spends six months in 80% French and 20% American oak barrels. This wine is ideal to serve with a large variety of foods especially with meat and hard cheeses. Pairs beautifully with red meats, lambs and stews. They're all the more irresistible for their high acclaim over the years, whether "Recommended" by Food and Wine Magazine or  listed among the "Top Value" by Wine Spectator, making the "Best Buy" lineup repeatedly by Wine Enthusiast or praised as "New World Value Wines" and scoring in the 90s repeatedly among the "Top Best Buys" of the Year by Wine Enthusiast -these are clearly more than a name that befits the Valentine holiday. | Regular retail: $12.99

La Valentina Montepulciano d_Abruzzo
La Valentina 2011 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Our final Valentine pick, La Valentina, is among our favorites when staying in for Spaghetti Bolognese or other such traditional tomato based Italian fare. La Valentina's Montepulciano vines drape the south facing slopes of the Abruzzi Hills. 25 to 35 year old vines grip these clay soils that always inspire lively structured yet ripened fruit. Fermented in stainless steel vats and then aged 12 months in cement and stainless steel tanks with only 20% in wood, this wine retains an intensity often quieted when left to lull in wood. A sensual bouquet suggests red fruit, rose petals and hints of fresh spices. It is soft and warm to the palate with notes of red prune, cherry and blueberry harmoniously intertwined around a lively tannic theme. An exceptional harvest gives this a full, enveloping body which finishes with licorice and cloves that lingers among black pepper and cranberry. Looking for inspiration? This is ideal accompanying pasta timbale, lamb stew, char-grilled cod and seasoned, pecorino cheese. | Regular retail: $15.99
