Bread & Roses

Dear Friend,
A Special Invitation to Renew Your Support for Bread & Roses

Every day, we in the Bay Area have countless opportunities to enjoy high quality entertainment. Yet tens of thousands of our neighbors have little or no access to these inspiring performances. They are elders living in convalescent homes, children seeking refuge with their families in homeless shelters, veterans being cared for in VA hospitals, developmentally disabled adults, and countless others who live apart from friends and family while facing very challenging circumstances.

As a Bread & Roses supporter, you help shatter the "sound barrier" that stands between these individuals and the healing power of live music.  Last year, with your support, Bread & Roses had a uniquely positive impact -bringing joy, hope and healing to 29,000 of our neighbors in need through live music. As Board Chair, I am especially proud that Bread & Roses disproved the notion that it's hard to have an impact here in the Bay Area-that only in a poor country overseas can a small gift make a big difference.

For example, as little as $25 lights up the life of a child or isolated elder with a song of joy and love. And a gift of $500 reawakens an entire audience to their most alive and inspired selves.

Last year at this time, I asked you to support Bread & Roses and was deeply moved by your generous response. Thanks to you, we were able to present 601 performances throughout the Bay Area. And what a difference these shows made!

In their own words...

Heidi Koerlin, a child life specialist at Children's Hospital and Research Center Oakland speaks to the impact of the shows we present for the children in her care:

Children's Hospital and Research Center at Oakland is very grateful for the wonderful visits from Bread & Roses... There have been many times that a child who is too sick to get out of bed has a big smile on her face after a bedside visit from Bread & Roses. Also the entertainers make the parents happier by helping make their hospital stays more enjoyable. Often, medical staff can be seen hanging outside the door as they enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the music. We are truly lucky to benefit from this entertainment!

And Stephanie Muller of the Delancey Street Foundation says:

I know you said you do over 600 shows a year, but somehow you make it seem that our show is always important and nothing else matters. This year, about 90 percent of the residents of Delancey Street had never, ever seen a live concert. Because of you and your incredible organization, they learned about the joy and healing of music...As you know, all our folks have been locked up in prison for most of their lives, or involved in gangs and drugs and hate. You were able to bring joy and love and hope in the BEST way possible. We love you and can't wait to see you again.

Karen Zanetell, Chief of Therapeutic Activities at the Yountville Department of Veteran's Affairs, says:

The geriatric residents as well as the young folks returning from Iraq and Afghanistan benefit from the beauty, soulfulness and generosity of your musicians. Music reaches deep to heal, gather folks together and mend wounded psyches. Thank you for your profound generosity.
