I write with a Sharpie or a No.2 pencil
Device I couldn't live without:
Corkscrew
My greatest accomplishment outside my profession:
Volunteering in our community
Favorite advertising/marketing campaign:
Vintage VW Bug Advertising Campaign by DDB...I have a collection from the 50's and 60's. In fact, I own a '79 bug convertible....that needs a little engine work.

"...a title doesn't mean anything" (except maybe to the person that has it)
My greatest unfulfilled ambition is:
To be a voice-over in an animated film. (I also want to learn how to juggle)
The one thing you might not know about me:
I played the banjo for a bit when I was a kid...just to make dad happy

The AdClub partnered with Melinda Bowden of
PromoHits! to develop an online store where you can purchase AdClub-branded gear including shirts, mugs, bags, blankets, and more. This is the first time the AdClub has offered branded items to proudly show your ACT affiliation. A small percentage of each purchase goes to financially support the AdClub.

learn \ˈlərn\
transitive verb
1. to gain knowledge or understanding of or skill in by study, instruction, or experience <learn a trade>
In our board meetings we have held several discussions on what motivates individuals/businesses to join the Advertising Club of Toledo and what triggers people to attend the monthly luncheons. From a survey in 2011, we found some individuals come for the networking, some come to add to their credentials, some like to be around like minds, others come for the topic or the education opportunities.
Originally my focus was more education-related. I started attending monthly luncheons in the 90's because I wanted to "learn" and be associated with and support the industry I work in. I am intrigued by other people's perspective, theories and marketing views. I wanted to raise the bar and expand my perspective.
September 18th kicks off our 2013/2014 monthly luncheon series and we are welcoming Mike Gibbons from Mainstreet Ventures (read on to find out more about Mainstreet Ventures) which is headquartered are in Ann Arbor, MI. Mike is slated to discuss "nontraditional marketing methods and the success they have had with it".
So why come to this luncheon? If I worked for an agency I would want to find out if there are things I can walk away with that can help me apply their tactics to my customers. If I work in traditional media then I want to find out what type of emerging media/marketing competition I am up against and if there is something I should be doing differently. Again for me, it's all about "learning", growth and expanding my perspective. It's about being relevant in this fast-past shifting industry.
Come learn with me. Contact Patty today to RSVP your seat. Networking starts at 11:30 at Brandywine Country Club and luncheon buffet begins at 11:45. Win a $25 gift card to one of Mainstreet Ventures restaurants!
ACT has also been busy working on another knockout event (as Kathy Jex would say). Toledo Celebrity Fight Night II, takes place on Thursday, October 3, 2013, and will benefit the International Boxing Club and the Advertising Club of Toledo. Last year we raised $10,000 by joining forces.
Toledo Celebrity Fight Night II offers something for everyone with local celebrities and business people in fun matches and exhibition matches featuring the young boxers of the IBC.
If you want to be inspired and "learn" you need to meet Harry E. Cummins, III. In addition to being a professionally licensed sports promoter, matchmaker and corner man, Harry is also a coach, a motivator and mentor.
The IBC is a 501(c)(3) organization that Harry created in 1998. IBC is dedicated to helping the underserved youth of the Toledo area stay out of gangs, stay in school, and get a good start in life through exercise, education assistance and a safe place to belong. They offer free after-school and summer programs including athletic training in boxing for area boys and girls age 9-18 years of age. The IBC is the first gym in the nation to have an education center included as a mandatory part of its program.
As Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." (And I would even add change myself!)
Come "learn" and grow with us. Call or email Patty today to reserve your seat ($50/ticket) or table for ten!

Health Care Reform and Mental Health
Mental health issues effect 1 out 4 people, yet many still do not seek the help they or a loved one needs. STIGMA is slowly becoming less of a barrier to getting help from professionals in the Mental Health arena. This is good news for many reasons which most importantly is a person's TOTAL well being. There are actually "well being indexes" now that healthcare is utilizing that shows the permanent change of incorporating mental health in with physical health. This is all part of the major shift that is occurring right now in health care reform. Bottom-line the name of the game now to lower costs down the road is a full throttle shift to wellness and prevention and early diagnosis of issues before they become costly sick care treatments. Along with this new focus comes the accountability piece for healthcare providers (both mental and physical) of better outcomes and actual financial penalties for having people re-admit, in lay man's terms not getting a person healthy the first time based on actuarial standards of care. Managed Care for the ENTIRE person's healthcare needs is front and center now and mental health (our minds) in the driver's seat now as a way to lower costs, and ensure people become more compliant and responsible for their own health. So with Medicaid Expansion for the State of Ohio moving forward (it will pass if not thru our Ohio legislature than by being on the ballot in Nov 14, and 70 percent of our citizens are in support of) and health exchanges coming about January 1, 2014 (only penalities to employers for non compliance pushed back to 2015) suffice it to say the healthcare delivery system is changing rapidly as we all work out operationalizing parts of the Affordable Care Act. It is a confusing time but ultimately the goals are clear: more people covered, a shift with financial incentives to focus on wellness and preventative care and to ultimately have a better system of delivery in the US with better health for all for all the money spent. In the short run though health insurance commercial rates are up and will be until some of the tide on this turns. The turn again being the shift from hospital stays and disease management once onset occurs towards preventing/controlling illness as cost effectively as possible, and in time better overall "well being and total personal health"..which all can now agree on includes in a significant way ours minds and ultimately behavior modification and ownership of our own personal health. Hang on these next few years are going to be a wild ride in the healthcare and insurance industry. To see how healthy you are Google up the Well Being Index and do a self rating! No time like the present :) The Well Being Index is a Gallop Poll that includes 5 key areas: career, social, financial, physical and community.

We are pleased to write to you with exciting news about the ADDY Awards.
By now we hope you have heard that the ADDY Awards have undergone some exciting major changes. Over the years the competition rules, categories, classifications, judging and ceremony have continually adapted to changing times, technology and new emerging media. The ADDY Awards competition has become the proving ground for some of the best and the brightest in the American advertising Industry. In recognition of the stature of our award program and to these changing times, on June 8th at the National ADDY Award Ceremony, we announced that the ADDY Awards will now be known as the American Advertising Awards beginning with the upcoming 2013-2014 ADDY Season. We have developed a new look for the Awards, a new logo and a new trophy. You can begin using this new name in your competition this year and you can adopt the new logo as well. The new logo artwork will be available for download by the clubs from the AAF website in the coming days.
We also have exciting news about the ADDY software. As administrators of the competition for your club, you already face enough big challenges as you promote and manage all of the elements that go into it. We know and understand that we must provide you with better tools for doing this work... a better system for you, your club and your entrants to use so your work is easier and your competition is more successful. Therefore, we have entered into a relationship with a new software provider to develop and operate an awards platform that you will find easy to learn, intuitive and dependable. To whet your appetite, here are some features we are excited about that will be part of the brand new ADDY software platform - ready for you to use this season:
- Twice as many payment options for clubs to choose from
- Drag and Drop file upload screen
- Report Builder option that lets you create custom reports
- Entry duplication or 'cloning' feature
- Improved technical support services
This new state of the art system for entrants and administrators of the American Advertising Awards is a robust platform designed from the ground up to withstand the rigors of the heaviest ADDY entry periods. With this benefit, combined with the new intuitive interface and user-defined features, we believe that you and your club will be able to recruit new entrants and increase entries confidently. To facilitate your efforts, we have prepared a sample letter that you can use as a template when preparing your club's communication to entrants. Feel free to use all or part of this letter in emails, web or Facebook posts, or any other competition communications.
We have plans in place to help you learn to use this new software in an easy and simple way, so that you and your club can go live with confidence. We will be back in touch with you about a schedule of training sessions later in the summer. In fact, if you have another or newer ADDY contact you would like us to reach out to at that time, be sure to let us know who that person is by emailing names and email addresses to addyinfo@aaf.org.
We thank you for your continued participation in the American Advertising Awards. We know that it all starts with you and we value your dedication and the time you put into this important work. We look forward to a successful year for everyone involved.
Sincerely,
Joanne Schecter
