Who Am I?
My place of birth is:
Vermilion Ohio
My hobbies are:
Humane Ohio fundraising, knitting, reading "cat" mysteries, motorcycle riding, visiting museums
The last good book I read was:
anything by Lydia Adamson, Lillian Jackson Braun, Evan Marshall, Shirley Rosseau Murphy
My oddest habit is:
Some people might find it odd, my husband finds it obsessive, but I just can't seem to stop rescuing pitiful homeless kitties that show up in my yard
Device I couldn't live without:
Smartphone - every day I wonder how I ever survived early in my career without one. Love to text, check my email, watch NetFlix, play Jewels...it really helps pass the time whenever I have to wait for someone. My first cell phone was a "bag" phone I kept in my car for "emergency" situations when out on the road - we've come a long way, baby.
My greatest accomplishment outside my profession:
Whatever I can do to help Humane Ohio is two-fold. No more homeless pets through their low-cost/no-cost spay/neuter program, and the Pet Food Bank which allow pets to stay with their people rather than be given to shelters.
The reason I got into advertising/marketing:
I was the president of the University of Toledo Advertising Club for two years when I was in college and attended all the local AdClub meetings. I loved the creativity and excitement, and camaraderie of the members. I got a rush from impossible deadlines, and the satisfaction of surpassing customer expectations.
Biggest influences on me professionally:
Fred Harrington was our UT AdClub advisor and was very encouraging. Arnie Reemer & Richard Knecht were mentors who taught me much.
My greatest unfulfilled ambition is:
starting pet hospice to take care of animals after their people have died so they can live the remainder of their lives in dignity and love.
When nobody is looking, I like to:
sing and dance to my disco 45 records (yes, I still have the record player I got when I was a teenager)
The one thing I really want the world to know about me:
I care.
Best thing about being an AdClub member:
The people!
I am:

2012-2013 AdClub President |
The 2013 ADDY Awards are now in the books. Congratulations to all the Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners and a job well done to our 2013 Best of Show, Madhouse. Competition was very tough this year and I was reminded just how incredibly talented AdClub members are. I personally want to thank everyone who entered and/or attended the 2013 ADDY Awards. A very special thank you goes out to 2013 ADDY Chair, Suzette Kanarowski, and the entire committee. It was a memorable night. Thank you for all your hard work! Congratulations to Mr. Greg Shapiro, our Silver Medal Award winner. For more than 30 years, Mr. Shapiro has led H.O.T. Printing & Graphics through a series of transitions to become one of the largest commercial printing and graphic services companies in northwest Ohio. He has been an AdClub member since 1976 and has supported the club either directly or through involvement of his employees. Our organization and community are better from Mr. Shapiro's involvement and contribution. Congratulations! The Advertising Club of Toledo is looking for a couple people who are interested in serving on the Board of Governors. I've been on the Board for five years and I can honestly say that it's been one of the highlights of my career. It's fun, challenging and I get a tremendous sense of giving back by serving. If you are interested in learning more, feel free to shoot me an email at patrick@pwgmarketing.com or give me a call at 419.329.4256. Elections will take place in May. In March there are two great events planned for members and guests. The first is our annual AdPIN Bowling Tournament on March 15. This event is always a lot of fun. Round up your team of five and enjoy a great evening out! The second event is our March luncheon program featuring Matt Folk, owner of Second Sole. His Marketing on a Shoe String Budget and Building Ambassadors for your Business presentation will feature different ways to target customers and build sales through customer loyalty. Your AdClub Board of Governors is committed to increasing the value of your membership and we welcome any comments or suggestions. "Marketing On a Shoe String Budget and Building Ambassadors for your Business"
How do you build up and market your business on a budget? You find your niche market and create ways to turn them into your ambassadors. At Second Sole we look at different ways to target our customers and build sales through customer loyalty. We focus our energy through local and new events, event directors and professional field experts. These are the channels that create our ambassadors, drive customers through the door and promote our business as an ideal location for our target customers. We approach our marketing through our own passion for the sport of running. Beyond the external marketing efforts, we've focused on a mission to meet our customers' needs through a knowledgeable and friendly staff. By meeting their needs and providing our customers with a great experience, we've found they refer us to their friends, family and running partners. These experiences are communicated throughout the local running community as our customers have become ambassadors to our store.
Matt Folk has been a runner for over 20 years competing and setting school records in both high school and college. After college he became a two time US Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifier (04, 08), a two time Columbus Marathon Champion (09,11), and a three time Glass City Marathon Champion (09,10,12). He started working in the running industry in the fall of 1999 at the Second Sole Store in Youngstown Ohio as a part time job while coaching track and field at Youngstown State University. In 2008 Matt became the owner of Second Sole in Levis Commons.

Imagination Station, Toledo's hands-on science center on the downtown riverfront, is a vital non-profit organization that is an integral part of Toledo's economic, educational and social landscape. Imagination Station provides a critical layer of science enrichment by serving as an educational partner for teachers, schools and parents. It's with a thoughtful blend of exhibits, experiences, education and excitement that Imagination Station is inspiring future generations of scientists in northwest Ohio.
The mission of Imagination Station is to be a sustainable science center that inspires in children the wonder of science and technology, preparing them for lives and careers in our knowledge-based economy. Imagination Station employs their mission to impact:
- Families - offering families an opportunity to learn together as a unit; exploring the science center, asking questions and sharing in the educational process, all while spending quality time together.
- Schools - serving as an extension of the classroom, offering teachers valuable, academically aligned exhibit guides to enhance their students' visit. Additionally, Imagination Station offers a wealth of inquiry-based activities on their website for use in the classroom or at home.
- Community - participating as a responsible steward of the northwest Ohio community. The science center actively participates in community growth opportunities and educational partnerships.
Imagination Station is comprised of themed learning worlds, each focused on a specific science field, including: Mind Zone, Water Works, Engineer It!, Eat It Up!, Little KIDSPACE, Energy Factory and Science Studio. The science center also features a flexible exhibit space that has hosted 7 traveling exhibitions since opening in 2009, including the world famous blockbuster exhibition BODIES REVEALED. This May we will be welcoming Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body, followed by Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition opening in February 2014.
Imagination Station also offers a relevant and exciting schedule of special events that provides unique experiences for visitors of all ages. Sign up to receive our digital newsletter, Discover.e, to get Imagination Station's news and events in your inbox.
Being an Imagination Station member unlocks a world of exploration and discovery. Science center members receive unlimited admission to Imagination Station, reciprocal membership privileges to more than 300 science centers worldwide, invitations to special member-only events, discounts in Science2GO! and Atomic Café and so much more.
In addition to meeting the needs of our visitors and members, Imagination Station delivers a range of professional resources for educators that include a monthly electronic newsletter, companion guides for exhibits and learning worlds, and free admission every day for teachers. Because not all schools can afford field trips to Imagination Station, the science center began the Adopt-a-School program, an initiative that provides access to school children. Supported solely from corporate and individual funding, more than 15,000 students in the Toledo area have received free field trip visits in just the last school year. Without this support, many of these students would never have visited.
Meeting Imagination Station's mission to inspire in children the wonder of science and technology often involves more than a field trip. The science center's programmatic efforts entail a more intensive experience that promotes hands-on, inquiry-based exploration and engages children in exciting scientific discovery. Outreach programs bring science education to the schools. Hot Summer, Cool Science Summer Camps help students avoid the summer slide by keeping them engaged and learning. Scout Badge Programs and Camp-In are weekend and overnight programs designed to meet scout troop requirements on a variety of topics.
As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, Imagination Station relies on the generous support of individuals and organizations. To help the science center continue its mission, please consider making a donation to Imagination Station Annual Fund.

2013 Silver Medal Award Recipient
|
GREG SHAPIRO
H.O.T. PRINTING & GRAPHICS
 |
Jerry Brown awards Greg Shapiro with the 2013 Silver Medal Award
|
For more than 30 years, Greg Shapiro has led H.O.T. Printing & Graphics through a series of transitions to become one of the largest commercial printing and graphic services companies in northwest Ohio.
From two employees in 1976, Greg helped grow the staff of H.O.T. and their "brother" company, Envelope Mart, to more than 100 team members, many of whom have been with the organization for more than 20 years. Without Greg's foresight and dedication, the organization probably would have gone the way of many other companies in our industry and closed its doors.
It takes a lot of original thinking to build and maintain a successful business for nearly four decades.
H.O.T. was a typesetting company for ten comfortable years, but Greg saw the writing on the wall. He transitioned the original House of Type to H.O.T. Graphic Services, a service bureau with one of the first Macintosh departments in the city. That required a major investment of research time and money in order to buy equipment and train associates.
Several years later, after affordable high-res desktop printers became widely available, Greg created H.O.T. Printing & Graphics and, once again, invested in the necessary equipment and staffing. Along the way he has been committed to the industry and the Toledo area.
Since 1986, Greg has been a member of the Advertising Club of Toledo, and has supported the club either directly or through the involvement of his associates. He believes in ACT's mission and has made many in-kind donations to the club for which he rarely gets much acclaim. But that's Greg's style. He's more of a behind-the-scenes supporter and a laid back guy who never looks for recognition - just the satisfaction of being content with his choices.
Although H.O.T. is not an agency, Greg has spent the last 37 years supporting local agencies as a vendor, helping them achieve their goals and those of their clients.
Greg is held in high regard in the philanthropic arena. He quietly serves his community in several capacities. He is currently a member of the board of directors for the Cherry Street Mission and Ohio Ministry Network, and previously served on the boards of Toledo Christian Schools and Calvary Church.
Although Greg works with many worthwhile organizations, it is not titles that he seeks. Years ago, while on his way to work, Greg drove past a small shelter on Broadway Street and saw a line of people stretching outside the door. This both touched and alarmed him as he realized the needs of homeless people and how lucky he was to be in a position to help.
Since then, Greg has been quite active in helping the needy of Toledo. He also has instilled that "giving" philosophy in his H.O.T. associates who, either individually or as part of the team, support many worthwhile non-profit organizations in northwest Ohio through donations, participating in events and serving on committees.
