Gotta JAB Orange Come Just As You Are to Meet Bridget Jones's Creator!
By Team JAB
From the hopelessly serious, but loveable, Mr. Darcy comes that simple, swoon-able phrase {without a hint of the co-dependency we caught in, "You complete me"} that still make our hearts skip a beat. "I like you very much. Just as you are." And is it any surprise that a book about a diary should contain such wonderful words? To celebrate next weekend's Books & Books event with Bridget Jones mastermind Helen Fielding {a conversation moderated by JAB Founder and President Boo Zamek!}, Team JAB is collecting your favorite moments or quotes from the series HERE to feature in an upcoming issue. And click HERE to join us on Saturday, November 2, at 7 pm at the Wolfson Campus of Miami-Dade College ... we like you very much, just as you are too, JABBERS! ,

Thanks!

Halloween ~ It's Tricky
From Victoria Assa, JAB Editorial Director
Every late October, I spend part of my weekend frantically searching for last minute Halloween costumes. Usually, my kids know exactly what they want to be so my search is specific and extremely productive. This year, my children wanted to "google" ideas.

I now understand why this is the very scariest day of the year, especially for mothers who are faced with a plethora of choices fit for a Madonna/Britney/Miley performance.

I had no idea that I would have to justify to my 10-year-old son why he can't have a shiny, gold "big daddy pimp stick" or a combat costume with its own assault rifle and bullet belt {all available on Amazon}! Nor did I have the patience to explain to my 8-year-old daughter what a French maid is {available in children's size 8-10} and why our housekeeper doesn't wear an outfit like that.

Thankfully, my children settled on something we could all agree on: my daughter will be a '70s "groovy girl" {not my favorite decade, but this costume actually has pants!} and my son will be Run from Run-D.M.C. {don't judge me}. The thick gold chain with a huge dollar sign and a matching grill that says "hip hop" is not ideal but this was the best I could do in a "tricky" situation.

Happy "Trick" or Treating {I know, I can't stop!} and Happy JABBING!

JAB's Favorite Recipes: Spiced Pumpkin-Chickpea Soup
Last week we told you how that pile of pumpkins at the market is really a source of "super foods", choc' full of fiber, beta-carotene and pytoestrogens ... and breast cancer prevention power! But don't just take our word for it! The proof is in the pudding ... or in this case, a savory soup from our favorite local foodies at Edible South Florida.

Find Seminole pumpkin in local farmers markets, or get it from backyard farmers. You can substitute regular pumpkin. Serves 6.

4 tablespoons olive oil
1 large onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2-inch piece of ginger, peeled and chopped
1 tablespoon sweet curry powder
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
Pinch of cayenne (optional)
1 lb. Seminole pumpkin, roasted (see below)
1 16 oz. can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
4 cups vegetable or chicken broth
1/3 cup heavy cream
Salt and black pepper to taste
Sour cream and chopped cilantro for garnish

Sauté onion, garlic and ginger in olive oil until onion is translucent. Add spices and stir around for a moment more. Add pumpkin, chickpeas and broth. Bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Blend soup in batches until smooth. Add the cream and check seasoning. Serve with sour cream and a sprinkling of cilantro.

Roasted Pumpkin
Preheat oven to 400°F. Peel pumpkin and remove seeds and stringy fiber. Cut pumpkin into ¾-inch cubes and toss in enough olive oil to lightly coat. Spread in a single layer on a greased cookie sheet and roast for about 35 minutes, or until cooked through.

Not a savory fan? Team JAB is featuring our favorite JABBER-submitted recipe in next week's issue ... and it's a sweet treat that's not to be missed!
