Dear JABBERS: I usually look forward to the end of summer. Not because I don't love the season ~ I do ~
 |
Boo's daughters and niece celebrate the end of summer
|
but because our school-year routine helps me stay organized. This year however, I find myself torn. While a big part of me wishes I could stop the sun from setting on the season that brings us late nights and later mornings, warm breezes and old friends we seldom see, I do anticipate a great year. A new school year means a fresh start and a lot of exciting changes for kids and parents alike. What could be more fun? As we begin the transition together from summer camp and staycations to homework and after-school activities, Team JAB is working hard to make the shift easy, fun and smooth.
Happy JABBING!
~ Boo

Where to Turn for Treatment My 26-year-old son was recently diagnosed with testicular cancer. Being so young, he does not know how to handle it or what to expect. Do you know of any support groups for young people going through similar situations? I know it would help to raise his spirits. Also, if you know of any treatment options for patients without insurance, that information would be extremely helpful. I appreciate your replies.

Help for HELLPI developed severe, sudden onset pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome when I was 32 weeks pregnant, and ultimately my daughter was delivered eight weeks early. My OB/GYN has advised me that if I have another baby, I will be monitored much more closely, and would require a doctor specializing in high risk pregnancies. Before I consider having another baby, I would like to hear from others with these conditions who had a HELLP-free second pregnancy. Has anyone experienced this? Do you have any advice or information to share? Thank you!

The Skinny on SkinnyGirl From Rachael Hodyno, JAB Ft. Lauderdale Editor
On Tuesday, Team JAB partnered with Books & Books for a breakfast event with Bethenny Frankel, quintessential entrepreneur and author of several books including her newest, Skinnygirl Solutions: Your Straight-Up Guide to Home, Health, Family, Career, Style and Sex. Not sure what to expect, a crowded room full of sophisticated, chic women eagerly awaited Bethenny's arrival. She entered like a force and immediately captivated the audience by being ... one of us. After a moderated Q&A she opened the floor, and her responses to questions ranging from skin care (check your bottles: simple is better) to brand management (she has two: SkinnyGirl and Bethenny) were humorous, informative, and relatable. JAB President and Founder Boo Zamek felt that connection. "I know what she means when she says, 'I don't want to hear 'no we can't do that', but rather, 'here's how we can make that happen'." On a personal level, JABBERS, I was especially delighted to meet and greet Bethenny Frankel, whose previous work inspired this mom and former paper-pusher to take a chance and dive into digital media. And that decision directly led to a home here at JustAskBoo.

A Stress-Free School Year
From Team JAB
We went to acclaimed organizational guru Barbara Reich for tips on how parents can start the school year out right. Take a look at her ideas for a stress-free year.
- Don't be afraid to say no ... to heading the benefit committee, to play dates your child doesn't want, and to activities that are inconvenient for you.
- Do volunteer ... for something fun and easy. By volunteering to plan the parents' night out, you can ensure that its location and date work for you. By volunteering to plan the 5th grade graduation party, you can win points with your child without suffering through a year-long commitment.
- Start your schedule by locking in the activity your kid likes most. Once you know when that meets, you can branch out from there.
- Back up all homework on an external hard drive or flash drive. Saving these files externally will protect documents from being accidentally deleted by other family members.
- Be careful not to over-schedule your kids, but many suggest that i-chatting is not a better option. Playing outside or reading a non-required book is a great way for kids to unwind!
- Take a deep breath or have a glass of wine. Staying calm is as essential during this time as pencil cases and notebooks.
