For the first in our series on beautiful Broward beaches
, we set out to discover what makes Deerfield Beach so delightful. Locals told us of a laid back, but hardly sleepy, community. Indeed, walking among the tourist-friendly shops and bars
International Fishing Pier
at Deerfield Beach
and restaurants that line "the bend" in A1A (just north of Hillsboro Blvd.) the mood is friendly and personable, very small-town compared to the action on beaches farther south. And for a beach with a reputation for being quiet, clean and family-friendly, it boasts a wide array of activities, from surfing to fishing to sunbathing and swimming, as well as a festive night life. We have included a series of photos from our visit throughout this newsletter, and encourage JABBERS to check us out on Instagram to see more.

So get comfortable, and learn a little about our most northern local beach while you help your fellow JABBERS hire a car service, find a French tutor, and book a Manhattan hotel for a mother-daughter trip to the City.

Happy JABBING!

- Team JAB

P.S. Look out for the next issue of JAB Ft. Lauderdale to be delivered to your inbox on Wednesday, July 3rd.  Even JABBERS need a holiday!

Beach Wedding

From Bobbie Woodward:  REPLY
I am planning my wedding ceremony and a short reception (passed hors d'oeuvres and champagne) on the beach, but the South Beach scene is not our style. Can anyone recommend a beautiful public beach in Broward or Palm Beach County or a private venue on a beach with an outdoor deck large enough to accommodate 50 guests? The vibe is beachy-elegant, the guests will mostly be in their mid-to-late 40s. Thanks!

A Ride for the Bride
From Allie Miller:  REPLY
I would like to hire a limousine service for a four-hour bachelorette party in the Ft. Lauderdale Beach area. Your referrals are appreciated!

International Delight
By Team JAB
South of the Pier

International Fishing Pier at Deerfield Beach reopened in December after a year of renovations and remodeling (including the repair of damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.) The result is a 976-foot jewel of a landmark that attracts thousands of visitors and residents eager to sight-see or fish, and, for at least one local, marks the southern-most border for quality surfing in Florida. For more information, and to contact the City of Deerfield Beach to offer feedback on the pier and suggested improvements, please click HERE.

From Team JAB
Surf's Up!
Cross under International Fishing Pier and a very different Deerfield Beach opens up, including beach volleyball, recreational areas and, Deerfield's pride and pleasure, surfing. And if you have ever dreamed of riding the waves, or are just looking for an opportunity to say "Sex Wax," now is your chance: free surf lessons, including a board and instructor, are offered every Saturday morning at 7 am by a local surf shop. Registration is open, but participants are encouraged to sign up online HERE.

It's a Wash
From Carlina Emmerling:  REPLY
My mother is considering purchasing an established laundromat, and my husband and I may invest. Does anyone have experience running this kind of business? I'd like to hear some pros and cons. Any advice or suggestions are welcome!

Here Comes the Sun!

At the beach or just out-and-about, it takes only 15 minutes of unprotected exposure to the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays to damage your skin. The ever-changing FDA guidelines and the myriad of available sunscreen options canmake protecting ourselves overwhelming. If you're hoping to find that elusive waterproof sunblock with SPF 100+, don't waste valuable shopping time. The new highest available SPF will be 50+ and sun care products are now all about the labels; there's no such thing as "sunblock," only "sunscreen" and ~ unless you are wearing a wetsuit ~ "waterproof" is now "water-resistant". We asked renowned Ft. Lauderdale-based dermatologist Dr. Shino Bay Aguilera to help us navigate the process (and the sunscreen aisle).

Tips on Picking and Applying Sunscreen

  • Try to put on sunscreen before you go outside to get full protection. And remember to reapply every two hours, more frequently if you are in water.
  • Always use a sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) 30 or higher. The higher the SPF number, the higher the protection.
  • Use a water-based sunscreen if you have oily skin or are prone to acne.
  • Look for a water resistant brand if you will be sweating or swimming.
  • Buy a non-stinging product or one specifically formulated for your face.
  • Buy a brand that does not contain para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) if you are sensitive to that ingredient.
  • Avoid using sunscreen on babies younger than six months-use hats, clothing and shade for protection.
  • Think about using cosmetics that contain sunscreen. Even these should be at least SPF 15.
  • Choose a broad spectrum of products that guard against the sun's ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays.

Dr. Aguilara's Top Sunscreen Picks

  • Glytone SPF 40: An oil-free, PABA free, fragrance free sunscreen built in a base of hyalurenic acid which nourishes the skin and builds a natural moisture level.
  • SkinCeutical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50: A weightless 100% physical, water-resistant sunscreen. This light sunscreen enhances your natural skin tone and boosts daily radiance.
  • ColorScience Sunforgetable Brush SPF 50: A self dispensing mineral powder that can be easily applied or reapplied throughout the day.

New York State of Mind
From Silvina Felman:  REPLY
I am planning to take my 10-year-old on a mother-daughter vacation in NYC at the end of July. This will be her first time in Manhattan, and I would like to find simple but central accommodations for our stay. Does anyone have a hotel or a private rental to recommend?

Carolina Questions
From Mariela Ray:  REPLY
I have turned to JABBERS in the past and have gotten amazing services from your recommendations. Now I need your help again! My family is relocating to North Carolina in about a year and I am looking for the perfect place to live. I am open to living anywhere in the state. My first priority is to find an excellent high school. I'd also like to find a place with a slower pace of life (but not too slow) with less traffic and stress. Your feedback on cities/towns in the state is much appreciated. Thank you!

Don't Tread on Me
From Team JAB
Sea Turtle Nest
It's high season for sea turtle nesting, and from Deerfield to Dania, cordoned off patches of sand remind us that, even on the most private of beaches, we only share our shoreline. Be a good neighbor by respecting all signs posted and steering clear of disturbing nests. Last year, more than 3,500 nests were recorded in Broward County, and if you do happen to see a sea turtle in the sand, the best thing a JABBER can do is to watch. To adopt a sea turtle nest, learn about supporting Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center students and the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program, and to watch video of a turtle nest hatching on the beach click HERE.

From Krista Culp:  REPLY
Ocean Reef seems to be a very popular destination. I am not a member but would like to take my family somewhere that is comparable. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

Don't Sweat It
From Anonymous:  REPLY
I am postmenopausal and for the past four or so years have begun sweating profusely around the head, face and back of my neck. It happens when I'm anxious, excited or in the heat. I tried changing medications and that hasn't worked. My physician does not believe that it is related to my medications and has suggested that I see an endocrinologist. Has anyone ever experienced these symptoms? I'd love to hear about your experience.

If you are happy with your deodorant, please share your favorite brand with me. Also, if you have ever used a prescription deodorant, I would love to hear your feedback. Thanks!

A Weight Off My Mind
