Happy Birthday, Boo Zamek!
From Team JAB
It's fitting that Boo's birthday falls on the first day of our warmest and sunniest season! Boo certainly has a lot to celebrate, including a growing community of more than 30,000 JABBERS who are committed to helping their friends and neighbors! Boo's talent for connecting people and her passion for her community intersected when she launched JustAskBoo five years ago. Today, Boo is widely considered an entrepreneur, philanthropist and community leader who created South Florida's premier online resource that connects in-the-know readers across four local markets. To us, her ever-growing Team JAB, she is an amazing leader who inspires everyday. To her friends, Boo is fiercely loyal, kind and fun ~ she always puts a smile on everyone's face. And to her family, Boo is a beautiful person who is devoted to her two adorable daughters, Caroline and Aly, and her husband, Paul. We wish Boo a very happy birthday and a year full of love, happiness and success. For more about Boo, click HERE!

Windy City From Team JAB The calendar still says spring, the markets still have milk, and the first hunker downs haven't dropped ... but the weather is all summer in South Florida. JABBERS, we know you like to be prepared for tropical storm season, even if you aren't quite ready to devote time to stocking up on bottled water and candles. Here are quick steps you can take now without getting your feet wet:
- 1 second to spare? Bookmark or Save to Favorites a link to a reliable weather website, like the National Weather Service.
- 15 seconds to spare? Identify your local shelter and recommended evacuation routes. Locating them is a quick click away, HERE, and saves you from fighting with Google Maps during a storm. Pet-friendly shelters exist, but require pre-registration with the Humane Society, 954.989.3977.
- 60 seconds to spare? Sign up for CodeRED, a free emergency notification telephone service provided by our local cities, including Ft. Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, Miramar, Coral Springs and Weston. Let them ~ not the 24-hour news cycle ~ tell you when to worry. (Don't see your city? Check out your local municipality's home page for their city-specific link to register for CodeRED.)
- Have a little more time? Watch a free webinar and learn about preparing your home for hurricanes. The program is brought to you by the Florida Foundation and recommended by the City of Hallendale, and has a shorter run-time than most summer disaster movies.
Do you have hurricane-preparedness tips to share with your fellow JABBERS? Email them HERE and we will include them in a future issue of JustAskBoo!

Sleepless Nights My four-and-a-half-year-old daughter has been having trouble sleeping for years. The issues she initially exhibited have changed over the years from trouble at bed time (screaming for hours) to waking up multiple times in the middle of the night. She does initially fall asleep in her own bed but often wakes up very early in the night before we're asleep and insists on sleeping on the floor in our room. The situation is now completely disruptive to our whole family since she refuses to sleep alone and we have no privacy or space from her. We have taken her to a child psychologist who labeled her with major separation anxiety. The therapist suggested she sleep on our floor (despite my objection) so that everyone can get more rest, but I am concerned that we are exacerbating the situation by encouraging her habits. Have you ever dealt with anything like this? If so, is there another therapist or healthcare professional I should speak with? Your suggestions and advice are desperately needed. Thank you!

Warning Signs From Lissa Dorsey, JustAskBoo Palm Beach Editor Summer vacation is here, JABBERS, and that means more time at the beach and the pool. While we never like to alarm our readers, Team JAB is aware of the article, "Drowning Doesn't Look Like Drowning," circulating on social media, and I am compelled to share it again with you. I experienced a near-drowning incident with my son recently, and believe that if I had read this article prior to the incident, I would have been able to react faster.
During a recent swim lesson with an excellent instructor, my son's teacher and I were watching him practice swimming to the wall. He had done this hundreds of times. He was in the shallow part of the pool with his teacher about five feet behind him, and I was standing at the edge just inches away from him. In an instant, something went wrong. He wasn't flailing his arms around in the water, kicking his legs or making choking sounds. He wasn't exhibiting any of the signs of distress I assumed were present when someone was drowning. He just appeared to be standing still. But he was, in fact, drowning.
We were lucky that day, JABBERS. I've learned that the signs of drowning can be so subtle that even a parent and a swim instructor standing inches away can miss it. Please take a minute to read the article above, and educate yourself and your loved ones on the signs of drowning. Have a safe summer and Happy JABBING!
