Wilma Bulkin Siegel, M.D.
This weekend, we honor those who have fallen while serving our country, as the inaugural exhibit at the new Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women's
 | The artist at her Ft. Lauderdale studio |
Center at Holy Cross HeathPlex, Portraits and Conversations: Veterans Returning From Iraq and Afghanistan, honors those who have served and returned. This month, we shine our spotlight on Wilma Bulkin Siegel, M.D., the Ft. Lauderdale artist behind the exhibit.
Veterans are the latest subjects for the artist, who hopes to bring attention to their struggles ~ especially the "invisible" wounds of PTSD, said to affect up to 40% of returning soldiers. Wilma has raised awareness through similar collections focusing on seniors with AIDS, breast cancer survivors, Holocaust survivors and the homeless since she began showing in the early 1990s. Relocating to Ft. Lauderdale in 1991, at her beloved husband's urging she turned a lifelong hobby into a second career. Studying under artists including sculptor Bruno Lucchesi of The New School, and attending the National Academy of Design, she told us that she developed her style as an artist early on: closely cropped, vividly colored canvases that have a personal and touching effect on the viewer, exposing life and humanity ~ and hope ~ where there is suffering. She developed a motto she refers to as "the Three C's: Communication, Compassion, and Creativity." It's a variation of a motto ~ another "Three C's" ~ she followed in her former life in medicine, taken from an old French adage, "Cure sometimes, Console often, Comfort always." After spending a few hours hearing her stories and talking about her art in her studio near downtown, it's clear that she has lived this motto: as a child growing up outside of Philadelphia, caring for her sick father; and in her distinguished professional career as a prominent New York City oncologist and academic, pioneering hospice in New York State and advising on AIDS to the Presidential Commission in Washington in the 1980s. Although she is retired from medicine, she continues to advocate for a larger place for art and "'right-brain' thinking" in the discipline, working with the University of Miami School of Medicine and through "Wilma's Studio" at Columbia University Medical Center. Her life as an artist has only changed the medium, and not the message. Thank you for sharing your message with us, Wilma.
Happy Memorial Day and Happy JABBING! Portraits and Conversations: Veterans Returning From Iraq and Afghanistan , remains on display through June 2013. For more information, click HERE.

JABBERS, You Truly Change Lives
From Anonymous
I am having a hard time typing this through the tears of thankfulness streaming down my face. I asked for recommendations for a therapist after learning that my husband was having an affair, and I am overcome with the wonderful responses I received from fellow JABBERS. You all have been so supportive with names of professionals, titles of books that helped you, and stories of your own struggles. I felt so alone, but now I know I am not. Boo and the rest of the team ~ you provide a stellar service! Thank you one and all.

Making Memories on Memorial Day From Team JAB
We celebrate Memorial Day in such a variety of ways, by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Here are a few ways JABBERS can observe the holiday this year: Travel to Lake Worth to pay homage to those who have fallen at the 6th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the South Florida VA National Cemetery, beginning at 10 am on Monday (shuttle service begins at 8 am.) - Join your neighbors at A1A and Las Olas Boulevard for a classic car show and live music at the City of Ft. Lauderdale's 4th Annual Great American Beach Party, beginning Saturday at 10 am.
- Barbecuing at home? Try something new with JAB! Sister publication JustAskBoo Palm Beach educated us on a butcher's choice cuts of beef and sommelier-picked wine pairings in a recent issue. And editor Lissa Dorsey shared her family recipe for St. Louis barbecue sauce in another.
Are we missing something? Tell us how you plan on spending Memorial Day 2013 or send a picture of your holiday fun by emailing us HERE, and we will feature it this weekend on Facebook!

(Un)Happy Meal Turns Into Happy Connection From AnonymousI recently posted in JustAskBoo sharing my concern and seeking advice about my four-year-old son who refuses to eat. Not only did I receive a lot of great responses, but I ended up corresponding with a JABBER who shares an experience almost identical to mine. We emailed one another several times and soon realized that we had a lot in common. In addition to her son having eating issues that I could relate to, our sons are the same age, born on the same day, on the same floor of the same hospital! We recently got the boys together for a play date and look forward to many more fun times together. If you've made a special connection through JAB, click HERE to share it with us.

Finishing Touch
From Hana Espinosa: REPLY I recently acquired an antique piano hinge secretary desk, and although I love it, it doesn't match my home decor. I would love to have it painted in high-gloss white with a super durable lacquered finish. I have heard that some auto body shops will give furniture that heavy duty high gloss finish. Does anyone have experience with this? I welcome other suggestions for how I can refinish the desk too!
|
The Great EscapeFrom Rebecca Firth: REPLY My almost two-year-old has figured out how to open the latch on the gates in our back yard. Can you recommend effective child proof latches? Or, do you know someone who can install a new child proof gate? We don't have a pool we just want to keep him in! Thanks for your input.

To see a larger, full photo of the balloon release and to read a full account of the event, click HERE. To help Bella and her family, Team JAB is collecting gift cards to Whole Foods, Publix or PetSmart, on their behalf.
