If you follow us on Facebook, you already know that Team JAB spent a delightful (and delicious) Sunday eating, drinking and making merry at the South Florida chapter of the American Institute of Wine & Food's 9th Annual Culinary School BBQ Battle,

Grand Champions The Art Institute
|
held in Esplanade Park. We whiled away the early evening sampling tasty fare from favorite local restaurants and wine labels, while five South Florida institutions presented their most impressive offerings to the hungry crowd in competition for the coveted Cow Trophy. JABBERS, we are pleased to report that Ft. Lauderdale's own, The International Culinary Schools at the Art Institute, swept the event's professionally judged categories ... and after tasting their Asian-inspired 55-hour braised brisket, we understand why.
It also serves as excellent inspiration for Super Bowl weekend, when JABBERS engage in their respective "battles of the BBQ". Across our county, grills of all shapes and sizes are being brushed and scraped, and slow-cookers dug out of storage. Let's face it: no matter which team you root for, no matter the score, we are all winners the minute we load that perfectly grilled portobello/breast/burger onto our plates. And this year, be inspired to pair your feast with one of the fine wines featured in this issue.
Happy JABBING!

Summer in Maine
From Lois Clemente: REPLY We are planning a family vacation to coastal Maine for this summer and would love your insight on where to stay. There will be eleven of us, ages one to seventy-five, and we plan to rent a four- or five-bedroom house on the ocean. Ideally we would like to find a quiet area that isn't too isolated with big Bay of Fundy-style tides, quaint towns to explore, blueberry-picking, kayaking ~ a wholesome, northern experience. If you know of such a place, please reply above. Your suggestions and recommendations are much appreciated!

Veni Vidi Vici Vino
From Team JAB
The experts at the South Florida chapter of The American Institute of Wine & Food, with the help of their sponsor Premier Beverage, picked five winning wines for JABBERS that promise to enhance your barbeque as they did at last Sunday's BBQ Battle.
Pairing of wines with BBQ falls into 2 categories ~ reds that will stand up to the spice and smoke, and whites that will enhance the flavors (for those who prefer white wine). The reds listed below feature big, bold flavors. The whites have a delightful acidity that cuts through the fat but also enhances the flavors of slaws.
The Reds
Las Rocas Spanish Red Blend: Ripe, jammy aromas and hints of oak. A bright, medium-bodied wine with a round, smooth finish.
Zonin Valpolicella Ripasso: Scents of cherries on chocolate. Dry with a fine, harmonious balance, great strength and sturdy body. A clean and persistent aftertaste.
Bridlewood Central Coast Red Blend: A delicious blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel grape. Jammy raspberry, cherry with a hint of sweet oak.
The Whites Masseria Altemura Fiano Salento: Appealing freshness combined with a rich, mellow texture. Sensations of peaches, apricots, and delicately scented flowers.
Zonin Prosecco: Very well-balanced and appealing, with the extremely delicate almond note typical of Prosecco.

Back to SleepI will soon be undergoing a surgical procedure that will require me to sleep on my back post-op. This may be a problem for me since I always sleep on my stomach. Can you help me find a way to stay on my back and sleep through the night? I have tried propping myself with pillows but this isn't working. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks so much!

The Eyes Have ItFrom Matthew Pinzur: REPLY I am shamefully admitting that I haven't had an eye exam in years. I had laser surgery seven years ago, and would now like to see an ophthalmologist, preferably in the Aventura/Hollywood area. Thanks for your recommendations!
