April 2014

Gardens evolve as they grow and so has Le jardinet. What began as a custom container design business has now expanded to include landscape design and workshops.

Somewhat unexpectedly I have also moved into the world of garden writing and find myself a regular contributor to the Sunset Magazine blog, Houzz and Fine Gardening magazine as well as my own blog and the blog that supports our book Fine Foliage. Just this week I have also been invited to write and produce a feature for a Better Homes and Gardens magazine title.

As my book FINE FOLIAGE has become so well received I have found that my speaking engagements are taking me from British Columbia to Florida together with other unexpected opportunities including developing and hosting a video/online garden design course.

The time therefore seems right to focus on all of the above and step away from seasonal container garden design.

I know you still want your containers to look fabulous so here are a few ideas for you;

  1. Angela has worked with me for 5 or 6 years now. If you would like her to continue planting for you please  contact her directly
  2. My Personal Container Coach service is a lot of fun -  and saves you money
  3. Join me for one of my Spring Container Workshop
  4. Finally I am happy provide names of a couple of other container garden designers who are personally known to me and work in the Seattle area.
Thank you all for your encouragement and support as I navigate these new challenges.

THINGS TO DO IN APRIL
Jack Frost bugloss
  1. Spread 1-2" compost or other organic mulch over the borders
  2. Weed, weed, weed....that shotweed (bittercress in the UK) is on a mission to take over the world
  3. Bait for slugs and snails (and rabbits and deer and voles...)
  4. Get your  early veggies going if you haven't already. Chit the potatoes on a windowsill (I use an old egg carton to hold them).
  5. Start your sweet peas in DEEP pots; these need strong root systems
  6. Stock up on Moo Poo tea - use it to pre-soak seeds, and water the seedlings
  7. Feed your roses with alfalfa tea or your favorite organic fertilizer.
  8. Remove old leaves from rose bushes as well as those on the soil surface as they may harbor fungal spores
  9. SHOP! Time to add new trees, shrubs and perennials while the rain can still be relied upon for watering
  10. Containers - add a splash of color to tide them over until the real spring/summer planting season. Try Goldheart bleeding heart and Jack Frost bugloss for great foliage AND flowers. Keep them in the pots or transplant to the garden as these are perennials
  11. Grab your camera - and walk slowly to enjoy and appreciate each new bud.
