March 2014

Lots to tell you about this month so dive straight in to see all the fun events we have planned, unique gifts we have available and a special feature on Spring Fashion in the garden.

We have got SO many fun events planned for you in our garden this spring-fall. We're still firming up all the dates but here are some things to look forward to

Spring Container Workshops (2) - May 24th and 31st

Meet the Artists (displays and presentations) inc. glass artist Jesse Kelly - early August

Photography & Design Workshop (all day) with David Perry - mid August

Fall Container Workshops (2) - September 20th and 27th

We will also have Container Boot Camps for nursery professionals.

And for something completely different Andy will be offering one-on-one woodturning classes.

Details of all these will follow shortly via these newsletters - be sure to invite your friends and family to receive these too. By the time the events get posted to Facebook they are almost full.

SPRING FASHIONS

Epimedium x Amber Queen

Whether you know them as bishop's hat or barrenwort, these plants (botanical name Epimedium) are a great groundcover for dry shade. Although evergreen the new spring foliage is always  extra-colorful and the delicate flowers suggest many fun combinations.

I loved these examples from the garden of my friend and designer Mitch Evans.

Epimedium x Amber Queen has much taller flower spikes than most with rich orange and gold flowers that look great paired with golden foliage such as this Tom Thumb spruce (Picea orientalis 'Tom Thumb') shown below.

Epimedium grandiflorum 'Lilafee' suggests a different color scheme with delicate lavender spring flowers shown below with Gerald Derby iris.

Shades of lavender from Lilafee
Epimedium x perralchicum 'Frohnleiten' - a ray of spring sunshine in the shade garden.
Looks wonderful with dusky purple hellebores and a dwarf pine.

There are SO many species and hybrids to choose from - time to shop!

HAND CRAFTED HEIRLOOMS AND TOOLS

While I am the garden designer behind Le Jardinet, my husband Andy is the craftsman. He has been wood turning for many years but has only recently started offering pieces for sale in our online store. Each piece is made from local materials right here in our barn in Duvall, WA.

Heirloom Bouquets

True collectors pieces, these hand turned and carved vases of tulips will be cherished for generations. Each one is unique and and would make a perfect gift for you or a friend.

 LE JARDINET IN FINE GARDENING

There are very few magazines that I subscribe to and only one that I have subscribed to for over 15 years; Fine Gardening. It has something for everyone from new gardeners to professionals. I am therefore always honored to be asked to write for them and this months issue has my latest article;
Big Blooms that Don't Flop
(Be glad that they changed the title from Big Bloomers...).

Look for it on the bookshelves now or order yours from Taunton Press.

LE JARDINET GOES HD!

Yet another new adventure - I have been asked to create and teach an interactive online garden design course
that will be available later this summer.

The title will be Big, Bold and Beautiful and will feature 7 video lessons mostly filmed in our garden. I will teach you how to get the designer look no matter how large or small your space or the design style you prefer. Watch for more details!
