September 2013

AUGUST - was an exciting month, the highlight being our daughters wedding here in our garden.

The weather had us worried when the day before brought torrential rain but thankfully the skies cleared for August 3rd and Katie was able to walk down the aisle without wellies or an umbrella!

Click here if you'd like to see photos of the preparation as we put together flowers and bouquets gathered from the garden (and those of our friends). We haven't received all the final photos from our photographer yet but I'll share a few special ones of the flowers and garden in a blog post as soon as they do.

Thank you for all your good wishes  - and patience as I stepped away from work for a few weeks.

 INSPIRATION FOR A SUNNY SPOT

Soft and spiky, light and dark, mounding and upright - this simple foliage combination is all about contrasts. I have it in an area which is in full sun and moisture retentive but well drained soil. It was planted last year but is already drought tolerant having been watered only twice all summer. Another bonus is that it is deer resistant.

Mexican feather grass (Stipa tenuissima) is the wispy evergreen grass which catches the light so beautifully. The conifer at the right is 'Feelin' Blue' deodar cedar (Cedrus deodara 'Feelin' Blue'). This particular one has been trained as a standard and I plan to continue to limb it up little by little to make it into a small tree.

In the foreground is a little dumpling of a barberry - Berberis thunbergii 'Golden Ruby'. This cultivar has ruby colored leaves with gold margins. In spring the new growth is truly vivid, summer color is richer as you see here and in fall it will look like fire and look amazing with its companions.

Did you miss the flowers?? Sometimes it really is all about the foliage.

BOOK NOW FOR FALL CONTAINER PLANTING

 Yes it is that time of year to think about your fall/winter containers!

As the temperatures start to drop the summer annuals will begin to look tired but there's no need to accept less than fabulous looking containers. There are lots of fall and winter hardy plants to work with. Tucking a few dwarf daffodils, tulips or crocus in those pots also makes for a welcome splash of additional color next spring.

Angela and I have already started taking appointments for mid-September and October so be sure to contact me soon if you would like us to get you on the schedule.

Something new this season;

If your project is small, if you prefer to plant your own containers or you don't have the budget for full service professional design I have a couple of new options for you;

1. My fall container workshops

2. Personal Container Coach Service
