Building Activity Continues at Brisk Pace in

Town of Lockport

        Building construction in the Town of Lockport should exceed $180 million for 2014, based on data prepared by the Town of Lockport Building Inspection Department. Led by surging commercial development, the Town expects to record its fifth straight year issuing more than 500 building permits.

            In addition to construction being completed during 2014 on the new Walmart Supercenter on Transit Road, the initiation of Phase II construction of Yahoo's Northeast Regional Datacenter in the Lockport Industrial Park are consistent with an overall high level of construction activity throughout the Erie-Niagara Region.

            The $180 million in construction this year compares with $31.8 million in construction for 2013. Although building permits are not expected to match the 2012 total of 585 permits, projects such as the expansion of Bison Bag Company and back-fill retail store construction for TJ Maxx and Rue 21 reflect an increasing demand for both new construction and for existing space.

            Residential development resumed in existing housing subdivisions, particularly the popular Heather Woods subdivision in the southern portion of the Town. Twenty single family homes are under construction or scheduled for completion this year.
