Blessing of the Firetrucks Report
Cranberry Festival
October 1 -2

The Cranberry Festival is coming!  It's almost time once again for one of the City's best loved festivals and one of our most successful fundraising events of the year.  Volunteers will be needed to staff the table and to provide baked goods and fudge for sale.  Christ Church bakers and candymakers have a well-earned reputation for having some of the best goodies to be found at the Cranberry Festival, and there are quite a few Festival regulars  who come to our table each year looking for their favorites.  A detailed sheet with tips for bakers and our Christ Church Easy Fudge recipe and sign up sheets are at the table at the rear of the sanctuary, so please let us know if you can help. Please note:  if you're bringing baked goods or fudge, please bring them to the Christ Church table at Farnsworth and West Church Street (in front of the book store) between 9:00 and 10:00 on the morning of the 1st.

Quote of the Week

"Do not be surprised that you fall every day; do not give up, but stand your ground courageously. And assuredly the angel who guards you will honour your patience. While a wound is still fresh and warm it is easy to heal, but old, neglected and festering ones are hard to cure, and require for their care much treatment, cutting, plastering and cauterization. Many from long neglect become incurable. But with God all things are possible."

This (Past) Week in Church History

September 9, 1087: William I, "The Conqueror" of England in 1066 and founder of several monasteries, dies.

September 10, 422: Celestine is elected pope. During his tenure, he convoked the Council of Ephesus to combat the Nestorian "heresy" (this belief, that Christ had two natures and two persons, was probably more semantic overstatement than heresy) and reportedly sent Patrick to Ireland as a missionary.

September 12, 1788: Alexander Campbell, one of the founders of the Disciples of Christ and the Church of Christ, is born in Ballymena, Ireland.

September 12, 1922: The American Episcopal church votes to excise the words "to obey" from its wedding service's marriage vows.

September 13, 1635: The Massachusetts General Court banishes Roger Williams, 32, for, among other things, his outspoken advocacy of a separation of church and state. Williams went on to found Rhode Island and the first Baptist church in the American colonies.

September 13, 1931: Pentecostal preacher Aimee Semple McPherson marries unknown vaudeville performer David Hutton. McPherson's third marriage, it ended in divorce in 1934.

September 14, 258: Cyprian, bishop of Carthage, is beheaded during the persecution under Roman Emperor Valerian.

September 14, 407: Early church father John Chrysostom, the greatest preacher of his age, dies in exile when, in poor health, he is forced to travel on foot in bad weather.

September 14, 1741: George Frederick Handel finishes composing "The Messiah," begun only 24 days earlier.

September 14, 1814: Francis Scott Key, Episcopal layman and cofounder of the American Sunday School Union, is inspired to write "The Star-Spangled Banner" during the bombardment of Fort McHenry during the war of 1812. The song didn't become the national anthem until 1931.

September 15, 1648: The British Parliament approves the Larger and the Shorter Catechisms, now used by Presbyterian, Congregationalist, and Baptist congregations, are approved by the British Parliament.

September 15, 1853: Antoinette Brown becomes the first female minister ordained in America.

September 15, 1963: In a racially motivated attack, the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, was bombed, killing four girls. The sermon that day was "The Love That Forgives," based on Matthew 5:43-44.

Saint of the Week
St. Januarius
Bishop & Martyr, 305

Little  is known about the life of Januarius. He is believed to have been martyred in the Emperor Diocletian's persecution of 305. Legend has it that after Januarius was thrown to the bears in the amphitheater of Pozzuoli, he was beheaded, and his blood ultimately brought to Naples.

Please let Fr. Matt know if you would like any announcements to be included in the weekly Angelus. Submissions must be made by Tuesday noon.
Grace and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ Church is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey, His Excellency William H. Stokes, Bishop. Our parish reflects the joy found in Anglo-Catholic worship and tradition, taking the joy and strength found at the Altar and bringing it out into the world in service to our neighbours.

In Christ,

Fr. Matt+
