The Ascension of Our Lord
May 5, 2016

The Ascension: Mass & Convocation Meeting
May 5, 7pm
Ascension Edicule
The Dome of the Ascension

Our parish has the honor of hosting the Burlington Convocation on the feast of the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

There will be a Sung Mass at 7pm followed by a light reception and a brief meeting of the Convocation. Please plan on attending!

Mothers' Day Brunch
Mothers Day 2 Sunday, May 8, 9am

Our annual Mother's Day Breakfast will be on Sunday, May 8, in the Parish Hall. Breakfast will be served between services starting at 9:00 a.m.

Assistance in the kitchen as well as servers are needed (children and older youth are welcome). There is no charge for this traditional delicious breakfast, but a free-will offering basket will be available. Also, there will be no church school so all the ladies of the parish may enjoy the breakfast together with their families and friends.
Planning Meeting for the Blessing of the Firetrucks
Fire5 Saturday, May 14, 11am

Planning for the 9th Annual Blessing of the Firetrucks will kick of on Saturday, May 14, at 11am in the Sacristy. Please join us as we lay the groundwork for another great event!
Rogation Procession
Pentecost Sunday, May 15, 6pm

Celebrate the Spring Rogation with Vox Fidelis on Sunday, May 15, at 6pm.   "Rogation" comes from the Latin "rogare," which means "to ask," and "Rogation Days" are days during which we seek to ask God's mercy and ask for His blessings,
particularly with regard to farming, gardening, and other agricultural pursuits.

Because of this, it is especially appropriate to bless farm and garden implements, so feel free to bring representative equipment to be blessed, placing them by the pulpit. A light reception will follow in the Rectory.

P.S. - If you or someone you know wishes to have farm equipment blessed on the farm, please let Fr. Matt know. He would be happy to bless equipment, seeds, etc.
Evensong & Parish Reception
Trinity Sunday, May 22, 4pm

Join us on Trinity Sunday for Choral Evensong & Benediction at 4pm, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. We're looking forward to a night of beautiful choral music, Benediction and great fellowship and food.

We hope to see you there!

Memorial Day Solemnities
Saturday, May 28, 11am

Come honor those who have given their last full measure of devotion to this our great Nation. Our own Andy Law is the Master of Ceremonies. The Bordentown City Memorial is located at the corner of Farnsworth & Railroad.

Churchyard Ministry

The care of our Churchyard is an important ministry! Not only is it nice to have our grounds looking well kept, but caring for the Churchyard is a big part of caring for the beloved dead buried therein.

We need your help! The Churchyard is mowed once every 7 to 14 days in the spring and summer months. Please consider taking on this vital and fulfilling ministry.
Roofing Project

During our April Vestry meeting, a motion was passed to contract with Trenton Roofing and Siding to repair all the tin roof sections of the Church, Parish House, and Rectory.  The scope of work will include the preparation, repair, and application of Karnak #97 fibered roof coating to the tin roof areas. New gutters and downspouts will be securely installed in these areas.  The existing tin roof covering the outer Sacristy and rear exit area will be removed.  An ice and water shield and a GAF deck armor will be installed as a moisture barrier. GAF Timberline high definition fiberglass shingles will be installed with counter flashing as needed. New gutters and downspouts will be installed, including the air shaft.

The total cost for this roofing project is $5210.00.  This necessary work is possible because of our non-budget Building Fund.  We sincerely thank our parishioners who contribute regularly to the Building Fund.  This is an important way to directly help with the upkeep of our Parish buildings.

This (Past) Week in Church History

April 28, 1789: In the South Pacific, a band of hedonistic sailors stages the famous mutiny on the Bounty. The mutineers then sailed to uninhabited Pitcairn Island, where they soon fell into drinking and fighting. Only one man and several women (taken earlier as slaves) and children survived. The man, Alexander Smith, discovered the ship's neglected Bible, repented, and transformed the community. The Bible is still on display in a Pitcairn church.

April 29, 1380: Italian mystic Catherine of Siena dies from exhaustion brought on by her efforts to bring unity to the church. Her visions, experienced since childhood, and her persistent pleading led Pope Gregory XI to return the papal seat to Rome from Avignon, France.

April 29, 1607: English settlers establish the first Anglican church in the American colonies at Cape Henry, Virginia.

April 30, 304: The last and most punishing anti-Christian edict during Roman Emperor Diocletian's reign is published. The ensuing carnage was so horrific that it was said even the coliseum lions got tired. The man behind the edict, Augustus Galerius, finally issued an edict of toleration on April 30, 311-just days before dying of a disease known as "being eaten with worms".

April 30, 1562: Two ships carrying 150 Huguenot (French Protestant) immigrants arrive off the coast of northeast Florida. The settlers established a colony at Parris Island, South Carolina, but abandoned it two years later due to a lack of supplies.

April 30, 1822: Hannibal Goodwin, rector of the Episcopal House of Prayer in Newark, New Jersey, (and Christ Church Bordentown) is born in Taughannock, New York. Though his main passion was making the Bible "come to life" for the children in his church, he dreamed up 24 inventions during his life and received 15 patents. Today we remember him primarily as the father of celluloid film for photography.

May 1, 1572: Pius V, pope from 1566, dies at age 68. A reforming pope, he ordered bishops and clergy to accept the propositions of the Council of Trent, but he also vehemently opposed the Reformation. He rarely hesitated to use the Inquisition in Italy and hastily excommunicated England's Elizabeth I (creating serious problems for English Catholics).

May 2, 373: Church father Athanasius, "the father of Orthodoxy," dies. He attended the Council of Nicea, and after becoming bishop of Alexandria, he fought Arianism and won. He was also the first to list the New Testament canonical books as we know them today.

May 2, 1821: Methodist missionary William Taylor is born in Virginia. He ministered to miners during the California gold rush and later became missionary Bishop of Africa (1884-1896). Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, named itself after him.

May 3, 1675: A Massachusetts law goes into effect requiring church doors to be locked during services. Officials enacted the law because too many people were leaving before sermons were over.

May 3, 1861: The Southern Congress approves a bill installing chaplains in Confederate armies. The American military did not normally employ chaplains, but they became a permanent fixture during and after the Civil War. Between 100,000 and 200,000 Union soldiers and approximately 150,000 Confederate troops converted to Christianity during wartime revivals.

Saint of the Week
St. Hilary of Arles
Bishop, 449

Bishop of Arles, France, and friend and relative of St. Honoratus. He was born to a noble family in Lorraine and was successful, although he gave up his secular career to join St. Honoratus at Lerins Abbey. When Honoratus died after being named the bishop of Arles, Hilary was chosen as his successor in 429. He was known for his austerities, his aid to the poor, and for ransoming captives. On two occasions Hilary became embroiled in controversies with Pope St. Leo I the Great, but they were reconciled, and Hilary's sanctity brought him great veneration.

Grace and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ Church is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey, His Excellency William H. Stokes, Bishop. Our parish reflects the joy found in Anglo-Catholic worship and tradition, taking the joy and strength found at the Altar and bringing it out into the world in service to our neighbours.

In Christ,

Fr. Matt+
