Prayer for Christ Church
|
Almighty and everliving God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth, hear our prayers for Christ Church Parish. Strengthen the faithful, arouse the careless, and restore the penitent. Grant us all things necessary for our common life, and bring us all to be of one heart and mind within thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Allied Recycling Fundraising
|
Spring is here !!! At least it is this week - but if you are like me, you spent some time outside enjoying the weather. So, as you venture out and are looking at the tools and equipment in your garage or shed, remember Allied Scrap will take any metal hoes, rakes, shovels, etc. that need to be replaced. That old grill.......Call the office for drop off times so we can put it in the garage for the next scheduled pick up.
Remember, Allied Scrap has been a partner that gives up income almost every month. Every dollar helps!
Stay tuned for information as we will be having a "Dumpster Day" in the Spring !!!

This (Past) Week in Church History
| |
March 3, 1263: French cardinal, Hugh of St. Cher, dies. He reputedly compiled the first Bible concordance and was the first person to divide the Old and New Testaments into chapters.
March 3, 1547: At the Seventh Session of the Council of Trent, the Roman Catholic church defines its theology of the sacraments. Arguing that seven sacraments are necessary for salvation-Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Penance, Extreme Unction, Orders, and Matrimony-the council rejected the teaching of most Protestants that only two were required: Baptism and the Lord's Supper.
March 4, 1583: Bernard Gilpin, the English clergyman whose ministry in neglected sections of Northumberland and Yorkshire earned him the title "Apostle of the North," dies at age 66.
March 5, 1179: Alexander III convokes the Third Lateran Council. Attended by 300 bishops, it gave the college of cardinals the exclusive right to elect the pope (by a two-thirds majority) and enacted measures against the Waldensians and Albigensians.
March 5, 1797: The three-masted ship Duff arrives in Tahiti's Matavai Bay, completing a 207-day voyage from London. The ship, commanded by Captain John Wilson, had aboard 37 artisans and pastors of the London Missionary Society (L.M.S.) and their families, who were to be resettled in the South Pacific on the islands of Tahiti, Tonga and the Marquesas.
March 5, 1899: Alcoholic-turned-evangelist Sam Jones begins a crusade in Toledo, Ohio, where the mayor was also named Sam Jones. Mayor Jones at first welcomed the publicity, but he worried when evangelist Jones decried the city's immorality (if the Devil were mayor of Toledo, the preacher said, he wouldn't change a thing). Nonetheless, the mayor was reelected the next month by a huge margin.
March 6, 1984: Lutheran pastor Martin Niemoller, a founder of Germany's Confessing Church and a prisoner for his opposition to the Nazis, dies. Because of his advocacy for complete neutrality between East and West Germany (which was perceived as compromise with communism), he spent his later years in obscurity.
March 7, 203: Perpetua, a Christian about 22 years old, her slave, Felicitas, and several others are martyred at the arena in Carthage. They were flogged, attacked by hungry leopards, and finally beheaded. Perpetua remains one of early Christianity's most famous martyrs.
March 7, 1530: Pope Clement VII rejects Henry VIII's request to divorce Catherine of Aragon. Henry eventually responded by declaring himself supreme head of England's church.
March 7, 1964: At a Roman parish church, Pope Paul VI celebrates mass in Italian instead of Latin, implementing one of the most significant changes of the Second Vatican Council-worship in the vernacular. March 8, 1698: British missionary Thomas Bray and four laymen found the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (S.P.C.K.) "to advance the honor of God and the good of mankind by promoting Christian knowledge both at home and in the other parts of the world by the best methods that should offer.
March 8, 1782: Ninety-six Native Americans, who had converted to Christianity and were living peacefully in the Moravian Brethren town of Gnadenhutten (near New Philadelphia), Ohio, are killed by militiamen in "retaliation" for Indian raids made elsewhere in the Ohio territory.

Saint of the Week | |
Priest, 750
Himelin was a priest of great holiness, said to have been from Ireland. While returning from a pilgrimage to Rome, he passed through Vissenaeken, Belgium, where he fell gravely ill on the road. Suffering from thirst, he asked for water from a maid carrying a water pitcher to the rectory of a priest who employed her. At first, she refused his plea out of fear of a plague that was gripping the region. But moved with pity, she invited Himelin to come to the rectory, promising to provide him with food and drink there. Himelin, however, insisted upon simply drinking from the pitcher, assuring her that the priest to whom she was bringing the water would be "well satisfied." The maid finally acceded to his request. When, after the maid had reached the rectory, the priest was astonished to discover that the water in the pitcher had turned to fine wine, she told him about Himelin. At once, the priest went out to find the invalid and take him back to his rectory, where he tended the dying stranger. Himelin insisted upon having only a pile of hay for his bed. At the hour of his death, the church bells pealed miraculously of their own accord.
