Lenten Feria
March 3, 2016

Note the Schedule Change!  Thirsty Thursdays for Bordentown's Bravest
On the Third Thursday of Every Month

Schedule Change! Thirsty Thursday's for Bordentown's Bravest will be held on the third Thursday of the month, rather than every Thursday. This will allow us to provide a bigger experience, including prizes and gift items, at each event.

On each third Thursday, join us at the Farnsworth House to have some fun and raise money for our city's fire companies.

From 5pm to 10pm any beverage purchased (even coffee and other soft drinks) will result in
a $1 donation to Consolidated Fire Association or Hope Hose Humane. See you there!
Adult Education in Lent
The People of the Stations

This Lenten season we will be taking a look at the people who populate the Stations of the Cross. Join our remaining sessions at 9am on March 6 and March 13 to hear and discuss people like Pontius Pilate, Simon of Cyrene, Veronica, the Women of Jerusalem, and Joseph of Arimathea.
Stations of the Cross
Every Friday in LentStations

Stations of the Cross will be offered
every Friday in Lent, beginning  on February 12 at 6 p.m.  The Christ Church Stations are beautiful and haunting, and they serve to remind us of the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf.  Remember that each one of us can walk the Stations on our own as well, in private devotion.  Please plan on joining us.

Lenten Altar Guild Prep Day
Saturday, March 12, 9am

A Lenten preparation day will be held on Saturday morning, March 12, starting at 9:00. We will prepare for Holy Week as well as polish items to be used during the Easter  season.

Extra blue UTO boxes can be found on the front table at the church entrance and on the table outside the church office. We will be collecting the contents of the UTO boxes on Mothers' Day, on Sunday May 8, 2016. More about the United Thank Offering can be found at http://www.episcopalchurch.org/page/united-thank-offering.

This (Past) Week in Church History

February 26, 1857: American Congregational clergyman Charles Sheldon, author of more than 50 books and editor of the Christian Herald, is born in Wellsville, New York. His most famous work, In His Steps (1896), sold more than 23 million copies and spawned the recent "What Would Jesus Do?" phenomenon.

February 27, 280: Constantine, the first Roman emperor converted to Christianity, is born. Though some scholars question the authenticity of Constantine's conversion (which came after he saw a vision on the battlefield), the emperor did seek to settle church controversies by calling the Council of Nicea in 325.

February 27, 380: Roman emperor Theodosius makes Christianity the official law of the land. "It is our will," he decreed, "that all the peoples we rule shall practice that religion that Peter the Apostle transmitted to the Romans".

February 27, 1773: Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia, is completed after six years of construction at a cost of about $4,070. George Washington purchased a pew for himself and his family for $100.

February 28, 1551: German Reformer Martin Bucer dies in England at age 60. One of the first Protestant ministers to take the radical step of marrying, he attempted to mediate between Martin Luther and Swiss reformer Ulrich Zwingli, but Luther would have none of it. "It is better for you to have your enemies than to set up a fictitious fellowship," Luther said .

February 28, 1807: Robert Morrison sails from Britain to become the first Protestant missionary to China. By the time he died 27 years later, he had baptized only 10 Chinese, but his pioneering work (including a six-volume dictionary and a translation of the Bible) helped missionaries who came after him.

February 28, 1638: The castle of Hara, on the Japanese island of Amakusa, held by 30,000 Christian troops under Masada Shiro, is captured. The defenders set fire to the castle, and all perished in the flames or by the sword. From then until 1873 (235 years later), Christianity was banned in Japan under penalty of death.

February 29, 1692: The Salem witch trials in colonial Massachusetts begin when Tituba, the female Indian servant of Reverend Samuel Parris, and Sarah Good are accused of witchcraft. Parris initiated the hysteria by declaring, "In this very church, God only knows how many devils there are." By the time other area pastors were able to calm the town, 19 suspected witches had been hanged and 150 imprisoned.

March 1, 589 (traditional date): David of Wales, whose ascetic path of restraint earned him the love of all Wales (he is now the patron saint of that country), dies. His final words were, "Be joyful, brothers and sisters. Keep your faith and do the little things that you have seen and heard from me".

March 1, 1854: Pioneer missionary Hudson Taylor lands in Shanghai, China. "My feelings on stepping ashore I cannot attempt to describe," he wrote. "My heart felt as though it had not room and must burst its bonds, while tears of gratitude and thankfulness fell from my eyes." Taylor would found the China Inland Mission in 1865, and he popularized the idea that missionaries should live and dress like the people they seek to evangelize.

Please let Fr. Matt know if you would like any announcements to be included in the weekly Angelus. Submissions must be made by Tuesday noon.
Grace and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ Church is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey, His Excellency William H. Stokes, Bishop. Our parish reflects the joy found in Anglo-Catholic worship and tradition, taking the joy and strength found at the Altar and bringing it out into the world in service to our neighbours.

In Christ,

Fr. Matt+
