Cranberry Festival
October 3-4

The Cranberry Festival is almost here! Sign up sheets are posted on the table in the back of the church, and the fudge recipe and boxes are waiting to be picked up by those interested in making our fudge recipe to be sold at this year's Festival.

This is a fun event to get involved in!  You can sign up to work at the "booth" on either Saturday or Sunday, help to set up in the mornings or  break down the tables at the end of each day.  Baked goods are needed - cookies, small breads, cakes - the more to sell the better - and cranberries are a key ingredient!  This has been a successful fundraiser for Christ Church, and has become a wonderful tradition!  Please contact Donna Hudak if you have any questions!

Compline w. Vox Fidelis

This (Past) Week in Church History

September 18, 1884: People pack out the Brooklyn Tabernacle for the funeral of Jerry McAuley, founder of New York's Water Street Mission and a pioneer among American rescue missions.

September 19, 821: Theodulf, poet, scholar, secretary of education, and bishop of Orleans during Charlemagne's reign is buried. He wrote hymns, among which his best remembered is "Gloria Laus et Honor" or "All Glory, Laud and Honor / To thee Redeemer King."

September 19, 1888: Missionary Jonathan Goforth begins a tour of the North Honan region of China, where he would spend the rest of his life preaching, establishing churches, and ministering to the needy.

September 19, 1955: Mission Aviation pilot Nate Saint spots the Auca villages in the Amazon jungle. The Auca massacred him and his companions on January 6, 1956.

September 20, 1224: On or about this date, on Italy's secluded Mount Alvernia, Francis of Assisi reportedly prayed, "O Lord, I beg of you two graces before I die-to experience in myself in all possible fullness the pains of your cruel passion, and to feel for you the same love that made you sacrifice yourself for us." Soon his heart was filled with both joy and pity, and wounds appeared on his hands, feet, and side. He reportedly carried these scars (called stigmata) until his death in 1226.

September 20, 1565: Spanish sea captain Menendez reportedly wipes out French Huguenots in Florida.

September 20, 1883: Albrecht Alt, German Lutheran scholar of the Old Testament, is born in Stuebach, Bavaria. His book Biblia Hebraica, which he edited with R. Kittel, became the standard critical text of the Old Testament for Bible students.

September 21, 1452: Girolamo Savonarola, a Dominican preacher and reformer famous for his religious zeal and extraordinary piety, is born.

September 21, 1558: Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, dies. Charles called the Diet of Worms in 1521, which condemned Martin Luther.

September 21, 1944: The National Religious Broadcasters organization is formed at a convention at Chicago's Moody Memorial Church.

September 22, 1692: Puritan magistrates hang the last 8 of 20 condemned witches are hanged in Salem, Massachusetts.

September 22, 1734: The Confessors of the Glory of Christ, followers of 16th century Polish reformer Caspar Schwenckfeld, settle in the Pennsylvania Dutch countryside. In 1525 Schwenckfeld had traveled to Wittenberg to ask Martin Luther for an appointment, but found they disagreed on many issues. He became part of the Radical Reformation and Catholics and Protestants both persecuted him.

Saint of the Week
St. Gerard Sagredo
Bishop, 1046

St. Gerard was an Italian bishop from Venice (some claim Basque origins) who operated in the Kingdom of Hungary (specifically in Budapest), and educated Saint Emeric of Hungary, the son of Saint Stephen of Hungary). He played a major role in converting Hungary to Christianity. He was the bishop of Csanád.
Gellért's martyrdom took place on 24 September 1046 (his co-martyrs were Bystrik and Buldus) on a hill in Budapest which is now named after him. Allegedly he was placed on a 2-wheel cart, hauled to the hilltop and rolled down the now named Gellert Hill, then as still being alive at the bottom, beaten to death. Other unverified tales report him as being put in a spiked barrel for rolling down.

Canonized in 1083, along with St. Stephen and St. Emeric, Gellért is currently one of the patron saints of Hungary.

Grace and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ Church is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey, His Excellency William H. Stokes, Bishop. Our parish reflects the joy found in Anglo-Catholic worship and tradition, taking the joy and strength found at the Altar and bringing it out into the world in service to our neighbours.

In Christ,

Fr. Matt+
