Choir Swap
Sunday, March 22

On Sunday March 22nd the choir of Christ Church will be singing Gabriel Faure's Requiem with orchestra at Grace Presbyterian Church in Jenkintown, PA.  The service will be at 10.30 AM.  Timothy Smith, Director of Music for Grace Church as well as Vox Fidelis will be conducting.  This gives our choir a wonderful opportunity to work with these talented musicians. In turn we will be inviting the choir of Grace Church to participate at Christ Church in the very near future.
Hope Hose Humane Fish Dinner
Friday, March 27, 4pm - 8pm

Hope Hose Humane Co. #1 will be hosting their annual "Fish Dinner" on March 27th, 2015 from 4pm to 8pm. Please come out for a little fellowship with your local volunteer firemen, and community members. BYOB.

Church School Update

A little child shall lead them. Our Church School children are excited and happy to assist with HomeFront when there is work for them to do appropriate to their skill level. HomeFront, which meets on the third Sunday after the 8 a.m. Mass, makes meals for needy people, and is an important outreach of the Parish. Is anyone interested in following the children?

The Episcopal Church Women (ECW), which consists of all the women in the Episcopal Church, is forming a group here at Christ Church. Part of the program consists of the United Thank Offering (UTO). At the back of the church, or on the table in front of the office you will find the UTO boxes (every time you are thankful drop in a little change). There is also an excellent booklet on the Theology of Thankfulness. Stop by and pick one up. Our Church School will be joyfully participating in this also.

Stations of the Cross
Every Friday in LentStations

Stations of the Cross will be offered

every Friday in Lent, beginning  on February 20 at 6 p.m.  The Christ Church Stations are beautiful and haunting, and they serve to remind us of the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf.  Remember that each one of us can walk the Stations on our own as well, in private devotion.  Please plan on joining us.

The ECW Mother's Day Challenge
(Only 7 Boxes Left!)
Did you get your UTO Box?

The Christ Church ECW challenges us to show our thankfulness this Lent and Easter seasons!

By placing an offering in your United Thank Offering box each time you are thankful for something, your gratitude goes on to help the mission and ministry of the Episcopal Church where funds are needed most. Look for your box on February 22, the first Sunday in Lent, fill 'er up, and return with it to the Mother's Day Breakfast on May 10.

This (Past) Week in Church History

March 11, 843: Eastern churches officially reintroduced and sanctioned icons, after an 89-year controversy that occasionally turned violent.

March 11, 1812: Fire engulfs missionary William Carey's print shop in Serampore, India, destroying his massive polyglot dictionary, two grammar books, sets of type for 14 eastern languages, and whole versions of the Bible. Undaunted, Carey said, "The loss is heavy, but as traveling a road the second time is usually done with greater ease and certainty than the first time, so I trust the work will lose nothing of real value . . . We are cast down but not in despair." News of the fire also catapulted Carey to fame, bringing in abundant funds and volunteer labor.

March 11, 1965: White Boston minister James J. Reeb dies after being beaten during a civil rights demonstration in Selma, Alabama.

March 12, 417: Pope Innocent I dies. His claims for the Roman see's supremacy went farther than any of his predecessors, as he asserted Rome's reach extended to the whole church.

March 12, 604: Gregory the Great, pope from 590 to 604, dies. Setting a high mark for the medieval papacy, he defended the primacy of the chair of Peter against even the smallest slight. He is also one of the four great Latin doctors of the church (along with Ambrose,Augustine, and Jerome), and upon his death, he was named a saint by popular acclaim.

March 12, 1685: Anglican bishop and philosopher George Berkeley is born in Ireland. As mechanistic science began to gain converts, Berkeley argued that the "natural" laws and processes are simply the mental phenomena of God and are not produced by an independent material reality like matter, force, space, and time. Berkeley was also a strong proponent of missions to the American colonies.

March 13, 1815: Presbyterian medical missionary James Hepburn is born in Milton, Pennsylvania. In the course of his missions work, he compiled the first Japanese-English dictionary and supervised the first complete translation of the Bible into Japanese (which was published in 1888).

March 15, 1517: Needing money to rebuild St. Peter's basilica, Pope Leo X announces a special sale of indulgences. A Dominican named Johann Tetzel led the way in promoting the sale in Germany and erroneously declared that indulgences would cover future sins (Leo's forgave all past sins). The teaching angered monk Martin Luther, who soon posted his 95 Theses in response.

March 15, 1672: Charles II issues his first declaration of indulgence, suspending Parliament's legislation against Catholic and Protestant dissenters. He was soon forced to rescind the declaration, however, and the following year issued the Test Act, which drove Catholics out of public office.

March 16, 1072: Adalbert, Archbishop of Bremen-Hamburg, dies. He energetically promoted missionary activities in Scandanavia, Iceland, Greenland, and the Orkneys, but he seems to have been largely unsuccessful. He did, however, gain considerable influence as tutor of the young Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor, and for a time was virtual ruler of the empire.

March 17, 461 (traditional date): Patrick, missionary to Ireland and that country's patron saint, dies. Irish raiders captured Patrick, a Romanized Briton, and enslaved him as a youth. He escaped to Gaul (modern France) but returned to Ireland after experiencing a vision calling him back to preach. Patrick enjoyed great success there as a missionary, and only the far south remained predominantly pagan when he died.

Born in Naples, he was ordained a priest in 1871 and during his time in the seminary he began efforts to help the deaf of his native city. He also did work with the sick and nearly died of a plague. He credited his survival to Our Lady of Pompeii. In 1885 he founded an institution for the deaf at Lecce. He went on to work with the blind as well and also orphans before dying at 75 from diabetes related complications

Please let Fr. Matt know if you would like any announcements to be included in the weekly Angelus. Submissions must be made by Tuesday noon.
Grace and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ Church is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey, His Excellency William H. Stokes, Bishop. Our parish reflects the joy found in Anglo-Catholic worship and tradition, taking the joy and strength found at the Altar and bringing it out into the world in service to our neighbours.

In Christ,

Fr. Matt+
