Prayer for Christ Church
|
Almighty and everliving God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth, hear our prayers for Christ Church Parish. Strengthen the faithful, arouse the careless, and restore the penitent. Grant us all things necessary for our common life, and bring us all to be of one heart and mind within thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Services for Ash Wednesday
7:30am: Low Mass w. the Imposition of Ashes 12:10pm: Low Mass w. the Imposition of Ashes 6:30pm: Rosary 7:00pm: Sung Mass w. the Imposition of Ashes
The Anglican Service Book has this to say about Ash Wednesday:
"Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent, a time of spiritual warfare, of fasting, penitence, and preparation for the Easter feast. Beginning in the tenth century ashes were imposed on this day upon penitent sinners in preparation for their restoration to full communion with the Church. Since the eleventh century, ashes have been imposed on all the faithful as a reminder that the wages of sin is death. As God said to Adam, "dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt return." (Genesis 3:19b) But as we are marked with ashes in the same manner that we were signed with the Cross in our Baptisms, we are also reminded that we only have life in Christ, the second Adam."

Parish Gift Auction
|
During the Annual Meeting, we announced that we will be holding a Gift Basket Auction on October 18, 2015 at Hope Hose. The auction has proved in the past to be a major fundraiser for our Church and we are looking forward to another successful and fun auction. Many hands will be needed to present the best event yet !! The first meeting will be at 10:00 am on 3/7/15 (Saturday) in the Parish Hall. In the meantime, some action items that we can "check off the list" before the meeting....... - Drop off empty and washed Folgers (red and green) large coffee canisters, and Maxwell House blue large canisters. We will be using these to hold all the tickets folks put in for the gift basket they want
- The Holiday gift that you received that you just won't use.....move it from your re-gift pile (we all have one) and drop it off to the office for the auction
- Look at your credit card statements for points you can turn into gift cards and drop those gift cards to the office.
As the meeting approaches, we will be publishing more information in the Bulletin, but if you have any questions, please call either of the co-chairs, Loris Johnson or Darrell Vigh.

This (Past) Week in Church History
| |
January 28, 1547: England's Henry VIII, who split the church of England from Rome and presided over the founding of the Anglican church, dies.
.
January 28, 1769: Thomas Middleton, first Anglican bishop of Calcutta, is born in England. While he oversaw a vast diocese covering all the territories of the East India Company, the church made some great advances, including the establishment of Bishop's College in Calcutta (a training college for missionaries in Asia).
January 29, 1499: Katherine von Bora, a German nun who married Martin Luther in 1525, is born. At their wedding, she was 26 and he was 41.
January 29, 1535: The French royal family, church officials, and many other dignitaries join in an immense torch-lit procession from the Louvre to Notre Dame-an attempt to purge Paris from the defilement caused by overzealous Protestants and their placards (a man named Feret had nailed one of the most inflammatory placards to the king's bedroom door months before). The day ended with six Protestants being hung from ropes and roasted.
January 30, 1536: Catholic priest Menno Simons leaves the Roman Catholic church over his doubts about transubstantiation and converts to the Anabaptist movement, which he would soon lead.
January 30, 1877: Responding to Henry Stanley's plea for "some pious, practical missionary" to follow up David Livingstone's missionary foray into Uganda, three members of Alexander Mackay's Church Missionary Society team arrive at King Mutesa's court. Though missions saw few immediate results, the Ugandan church quickly strengthened and grew after the missionaries' deaths.
February 2, 767: Alcuin, the academic who would later play a large role in establishing schools under Charlemagne, becomes headmaster of York Cathedral School, where he once studied. Alcuin's curriculum was built on the seven liberal arts: the elementary Trivium (grammar, rhetoric, and dialectic) and the more advanced Quadrivium (music, arithmetic, geometry, and astronomy).
February 2, 1594: Giovanni F. da Palestrina, the most gifted composer of Renaissance church music, dies.
February 3, 865 (traditional date): Anskar, the first archbishop of Hamburg and called the "Apostle of the North," dies. Missionary to Denmark and Sweden, he converted many, including the King of Jutland.
February 3, 1468: Johann Gutenberg, who developed a printing press with movable type that helped the Protestant Reformation (by allowing the easy dissemination of reformers' writings), dies at age 67.
February 3, 1809: German composer Felix Mendelssohn, a very devout Lutheran, is born in Hamburg. His "Elijah" oratorio is considered second only to Handel's "Messiah," and he is responsible for rediscovering Bach, whose music had been forgotten for 80 years.
February 3, 1864: The Christian Union, composed of Protestant congregations opposed to "political preaching" during the Civil War, is formed in Columbus, Ohio.

Saint of the Week | |
St. Joan de Lestonnac
Abbess, 1640
St. Joan de Lestonnac was born in Bordeaux, France, in 1556. She married at the age of seventeen. The happy marriage produced four children, but her husband died suddenly in 1597. After her children were raised, she entered the Cistercian monastery at Toulouse. Joan was forced to leave the Cistercians when she became afflicted with poor health. She returned to Bordeaux with the idea of forming a new congregation, and several young girls joined her as novices. They ministered to victims of a plague that struck Bordeaux, and they were determined to counteract the evils of heresy promulgated by Calvinism. Thus was formed the Congregation of the Religious of Notre Dame of Bordeaux. In 1608, Joan and her companions received the religious habit from the Archbishop of Bordeaux. Joan was elected superior in 1610, and many miracles occurred at her tomb. She was canonized in 1949 by Pope Pius XII.
