Prayer for Christ Church
Almighty and everliving God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth, hear our prayers for Christ Church Parish. Strengthen the faithful, arouse the  careless, and restore the penitent. Grant us all things necessary for our common life, and bring us all to be of one heart and mind within thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Join us at Trinity Cathedral to witness the Rev. Dr. Alan K. Salmon being made a Canon of the Diocese! This is a great and well-deserved honor for Fr. Salmon, and will take place as a part of the Diocesan Choir Camp Evensong. See you there!
Mass Tomorrow
Friday, January 16

Our regular noonday Mass will be at St. Mary's Burlington at 12pm, as Fr. Matt will be saying Mass there while Fr. Haynes is away.

Poinsettias Available

Now that we are in Epiphanytide, you're welcome to take home some of the beautiful poinsettias that have been adorning our parish. Sleeves are available in the front pew on the Epistle side of the Nave.

Annual Meeting
Sunday, January 25

Our annual Parish Meeting will be held on Sunday, January 25 following the 10:00 a.m. Mass. We will begin with a light lunch and then continue with the meeting. This is a wonderful opportunity for every member of the parish to 'get up to speed' on what happened the past year, and help set priorities for the year to come.

Newcomers Reception
Sunday, February 1, after the 10am Mass

Both newcomers and long-time members are invited to a casual reception following the 10am Sung Mass on Sunday, February 1. Members of the Vestry will be present, and as part of the reception, Fr. Matt will answer questions about the parish. Please join us!

Episcopal Church Women Meeting
Sunday, February 8, after the 10am Mass

Save the date for our ECW Kickoff Meeting: Sunday, February 8, following the 10am Mass.  More information to come!

Pledge Cards

Have you remembered to turn in your pledge card? Please remember that every pledge counts and is a representation of your commitment to the parish and to our mission. Many thanks to all who have already pledged for the coming year.

Our Parish HomeFront Efforts Need Your Help!

Each month our HomeFront meal ministry feeds around 70-110 homeless people, and we are desperately in need of help. The people that we feed are housed in local motels and have very limited resources to sustain themselves. We could use any contributions of time or money that you are able to offer--whether occasional or regular. There are envelopes on the welcome table at the entry to the church. Any thoughts, questions or considerations, please contact Gloria Jukes at 609-883-9895. Thank you!
College Students Take Note:

The Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of NJ is accepting applications through April 1 for Student Service Awards recognizing service to the church and service to the community.  High school graduates currently enrolled in undergraduate studies are eligible.   The application and three letters of recommendation are needed. Please contact the parish office for an application.
High School Seniors Take Note:

High School seniors are eligible to apply for a 2015 Van Duzer Scholarship.  An application, essay and letters of recommendation are required along with a financial aid form.  The deadline for submissions is March 1.   Applications are available from the parish office.
Consecration Anniversary of Bishop Matthews
100 Years! At St. Mary's Burlington

January 25th will mark the 100th anniversary of the consecration of the Rt. Rev'd Paul Matthews as 5th Bishop of New Jersey (the last bishop consecrated during St. Mary's  long service as the cathedral church of the Diocese). Bishop Matthews served from 1915-1937.

The anniversary will be observed with an Evensong at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 25th. The Rt. Rev. William  Stokes, 12th Bishop of New Jersey, will be present.

The service will also include the blessing of the Oratory Chapel in the north transept of the church. The furnishings of the Oratory are from the private chapel at Bishop Matthews's home, "Merwick," in Princeton and were given to St. Mary's when that building was demolished in 2012.

This Week in Church History

January 8, 1438: In an attempt to forge an alliance that would save Constantinople from the Turks, the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches meet at the Council of Ferrara-Florence. A temporary union was reached, but Constantinople fell anyway in 1453, ending the Byzantine Empire.

January 8, 1956: Missionaries Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Roger Youderian, Ed McCully, and Pete Fleming are killed by Ecuadorean Indians they sought to evangelize. The story of the missionaries and their deaths along the Curaray River was publicized by Elliot's widow, Elizabeth, in Through Gates of Splendor, published the following year.

January 9, 1569: Philip of Moscow, primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, is murdered by Czar Ivan IV, also called Ivan the Terrible.

January 10, 236: Fabian is elected pope. He served until 250, when he became the first martyr under Decius, the emperor who initiated Empire wide persecution of Christians. After Fabian's death, Decius is reported to have said, "I would far rather receive news of a rival to the throne than of another bishop of Rome".

January 10, 1645: The controversial archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the Church of England, William Laud, is beheaded. An enemy and persecutor of the Puritans and a staunch defender of the "divine right of kings", he found himself on the wrong side of history when the Puritan revolution began in the 1640s.

January 11, 1759: The first American life insurance company is incorporated in Philadelphia-the "Corporation of Poor and Distressed Presbyterian Ministers and of the Poor and Distressed Widows and Children of Presbyterian Ministers."

January 13, 1501: Christianity's first vernacular hymnal is printed in Prague, containing 89 hymns in Czech.

January 13, 1616: Flemish mystic Antoinette Bourignon is born. A mystical writer whose works were included by John Wesley in his Christian Library, she soon found herself estranged from mainstream Christianity, especially when she declared herself the "woman clothed with the sun" of Revelation 12. Still, her ideas were so influential that, for 178 years, ministers of the Church of Scotland had to make an explicit denial of Bouringnonism before they could be ordained.

January 13, 1635: Philip Jacob Spener, founder of German pietism, is born in Rappolstein. His emphasis on new birth and holy living revitalized the German Lutheran Church and many later movements, including American evangelicalism.

January 13, 1691: George Fox, founder of the Society of Friends (Quakers), dies. Fox left the Anglican church to rely on the "Inner Light of the Living Christ."

Posting in the Angelus

Please let Fr. Matt know if you would like any announcements to be included in the weekly Angelus. Submissions must be made by Tuesday noon.
Grace and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ Church is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey, His Excellency William H. Stokes, Bishop. Our parish reflects the joy found in Anglo-Catholic worship and tradition, taking the joy and strength found at the Altar and bringing it out into the world in service to our neighbours.

In Christ,

Fr. Matt+
