Prayer for Christ Church
|
Almighty and everliving God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth, hear our prayers for Christ Church Parish. Strengthen the faithful, arouse the careless, and restore the penitent. Grant us all things necessary for our common life, and bring us all to be of one heart and mind within thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Empty Your Pockets for Semper Fido
|
In the spirit of both the Blessing of the Animals and Veteran's Day coming up in November, we're hoping to raise much needed funds for Semper Fido. Semper Fido, Inc. is registered non-profit committed to helping in the rehabilitation of returning service men and women suffering from traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder while also saving unwanted animals from shelters and rescues. Semper Fido's service dogs often come from rescue groups and shelters, and their work benefits both those who sacrificed themselves for our freedoms, and the dogs that may have had no hope of a forever home.
Returning soldiers who've been paired with service dogs say this it is truly life changing, allowing them to live more full lives and feel more safe and secure each day. Training is intensive and typically takes 6-9 months, during which time Semper Fido provides for their care and feeding in addition to the very rigorous training needed for a dog to work as a service animal. The total cost to train a dog for service work like this averages $10,500, and there are many more service men and women who need them than they can provide for. Their greatest need is funding to pay for the training.
The camouflage coin boxes at the back of the church have a slot cut into them, and we're hoping that you'll take one and drop your loose change (bills are fine too!) into it each day from now through Thanksgiving. A little bit each day adds up quickly, and by the end of November we'll total up the contents of all these boxes and present our collective offering to Semper Fido. When your coin box is full, please bring it to Mass and return it or turn it into the parish office. If you fill a box quickly and want another, we'll have more each week.
Please help us help Semper Fido to continue their mission and give back to the men and women who have given so much to serve our country.

2015 Fundraising
|
We are planning now for our 2015 fundraising activities. Loris Johnson and Darrell Vigh are co-chairing a Gift Basket auction in the fall of 2015. Many hands will be needed to make this a great success. We will need folks to help with all phases of the event, from planning to the actual event. If you would like to help, please reach out to Loris or Darrell. We will also be participating in the Coke rewards program, to earn points that can be redeemed for Gift Cards for the auction. Stay tuned for more information on how you can help with this idea. There are also other fundraising events that we need someone to organize; like the pot luck/spaghetti dinners and raffles. If you are interested in working on these short term events, please contact Darrell.

Church Boiler
|
Our church boiler, unfortunately, needs to be replaced. We have contracted with Liberty Mechanical Services to dismantle and remove and H.B. Smith boiler installed in 1996. The new equipment has been ordered and will be installed soon. To provide funding for this project, the Vestry has approved a withdraw of up to $70,000 from the Capital Fund portion of our investments. We are most grateful for the generosity of our benefactors whose stewardship to our parish have built the Capital Fund to be used for major projects. Thank you for your patience as we complete this project.

HomeFront Ministry
|
Once a month the HomeFront Committee prepares a meal for the homeless people residing in local motels. These meals are picked up by a couple from another area church & delivered to the motels. We are always in need of more money, and now, more than ever, as the funds we have been working from are running low. If you able to help us with this cause, you will find specially marked envelopes on the Welcome Table at the entrance to the church. This will allow your contributions to be listed on your end-of-the-year Giving Statement.
In addition to money, we are always in need of help. The workload, as well as the amount of people coming to help, varies from month to month. Sometimes, you will work like crazy. Sometimes you will have some down time to have a coffee & chat in between tasks. We are also seeking to establish a list of people to call on in advance to cook at home & bring on Sunday morning. For example, maybe you might be asked to cook a couple chickens & dice the meat, or fry up a couple of pounds of ground beef. We will definitely be needing volunteers to cook bone-in turkey breasts for our meal prep on December 21. When such help is needed, you would be called in advance to see if you had the time to help with that month's meal. If you would like to participate in this request, please contact Gloria Jukes (609-883-9895).
Thank you for any help you are able to offer. This is a very worthy cause without any administrative expenses. It allows you to become involved in a very worthwhile effort on whatever scale is works for you.

This Week in Church History
| |
November 5, 1414: The Council of Constance opens to end the Great Schism. It deposed all three rival popes, but it also executed Bohemian reformers Jan Hus and Jerome of Prague, and anathematized the teachings of John Wycliffe.
November 6, 1315: Poet Dante Alighieri is sentenced to death, in absentia, by the magistrates of Florence. Dante, who was at the time working on his Comedy in Venice, avoided the penalty by never returning to Florence, from which he had been exiled for political reasons.
November 7, 739 (traditional date): Willibrord, a missionary monk who was trained in Ireland and traveled over northwestern Europe, dies. Called the "Apostle of Frisia," he was highly instrumental in the conversions of Germany and Scandinavia.
November 7, 1637: Anne Hutchinson is convicted of spreading heresy and banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Her idea that believers are so united with the Holy Spirit that human categories (like moral law) are irrelevant, and her claim of direct revelation from the Holy Spirit rather than Scripture, caused many of her supporters (including influential minister John Cotton) to back off. Hutchinson was later killed in New York in an American Indian raid.
November 7, 1837: Presbyterian minister and abolitionist Elijah Lovejoy is murdered in Alton, Illinois. A newspaper editor whose press was destroyed by vandals three times, he was accused of inciting slaves to revolt when he defended a black man burned at the stake by a mob. When another mob tried to burn down his warehouse, Lovejoy was shot trying to save it. His death helped to galvanize the abolitionist movement.
November 10, 1770: French anti-Christian philosopher Francois Voltaire utters his famous remark, "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him."
November 10, 1871: After seven months of searching, American journalist Henry Stanley finally finds Scottish missionary David Livingstone in Ujiji, Central Africa, and utters his famous introduction, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume." The relationship between the two men led to Stanley's conversion and decision to become a missionary.
November 11, 397 (traditional date): Martin of Tours, a bishop responsible for the evangelization of Gaul, dies. He is France's patron saint.
November 11, 1215: The Fourth Lateran Council opens. It officially confirmed the doctrine of transubstantiation-that the substance of Eucharistic bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ, with only the accidents (appearances of bread and wine) remaining. The council also prescribed annual confession for all Christians.
November 11, 1620: Forty-one Puritan separatists arrive in Plymouth, Massachusetts. They had hoped to settle further south, but as William Bradford wrote in his journal on December 19, "We could not now take much time for further search . . . our victuals being much spent, especially our beer".
November 11, 1855: Danish Christian philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, regarded as the founder of existentialism, dies at age 42. Trying to "reintroduce Christianity to Christendom," he believed that Christianity was far more radical and difficult than did his Danish contemporaries.

Saint of the Week | |
St. Joannicus of Mount Olympus
Hermit, Prophet, and Miracle Worker, 846
Hermit, prophet, and miracle worker who defied the Byzantine emperor Theophilus and his Iconoclast policies. Born in Bithynia, in modem Turkey, Joannicus was an Iconoclast until he was converted to the religious life at the age of forty. He became a recluse on Mount Olympus in Bithynia and a monk. Later, he defied the emperor and declared that sacred images would be restored to the Church. Empress Theodora did restore the icons.
