Empty Your Pockets for Semper Fido

In the spirit of both the Blessing of the Animals and Veteran's Day coming up in November, we're hoping to raise much needed funds for Semper Fido.  Semper Fido, Inc. is registered non-profit committed to helping in the rehabilitation of returning service men and women suffering from traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder while also  saving unwanted animals from shelters and rescues.  Semper Fido's service dogs often come from rescue groups and shelters, and their work benefits both those who sacrificed themselves for our freedoms, and the dogs that may have had no hope of a forever home.

Returning soldiers who've been paired with service dogs say this it is truly life changing, allowing them to live more full  lives and feel more safe and secure each day.  Training is intensive and typically takes 6-9 months, during which time Semper Fido provides for their care and feeding in addition to the very  rigorous training needed for a dog to work as a service animal.  The total cost to train a dog for service work like this averages $10,500, and there are many more service men and women who need them than they can provide for.   Their greatest need  is funding to pay for the training.

The camouflage coin boxes at the back of the church have a slot cut into them, and we're hoping that you'll take one and drop your loose change (bills are fine too!) into it each day from now through Thanksgiving.  A little bit each day adds up quickly, and by the end of November we'll total up the contents of all these boxes and present our collective offering to Semper Fido.  When your coin box is full, please bring it to Mass and return it or turn it into the parish office.  If you fill a box quickly and want another, we'll have more each week.

Please help us help Semper Fido to continue their mission and give back to the men and women who have given so much to serve our country.

2015 Fundraising

We are planning now for our 2015 fundraising activities. Loris Johnson and Darrell  Vigh are co-chairing a Gift Basket auction in the fall of 2015. Many hands will be needed to make this a great success. We will need folks to help with all phases of the event, from planning to the actual event. If you would like to help, please reach out to Loris or Darrell.

We will also be participating in the Coke rewards program, to earn points that can be redeemed for Gift Cards for the auction. Stay tuned for more information on how you can help with this idea.

There are also other fundraising events that we need someone to organize; like the pot luck/spaghetti dinners and raffles. If you are interested in working on these short term events, please contact Darrell.
2015 Stewardship Materials

In an effort to save time, paper, and postage, it is our intent to use email to circulate our 2015 Pledge Cards and Stewardship materials. Please email office@ccbtown.com with your updated email information. If you prefer to  receive this material in paper form, we will have packets in the back of the Church for pick up. If you are interested in eliminating paper - please see our electronic giving option on the Church's website. Any questions, call the office or Darrell Vigh.
Church Boiler

Our church boiler, unfortunately, needs to be replaced. We have contracted with Liberty Mechanical Services to dismantle and remove and H.B. Smith boiler installed in 1996. The new equipment has been ordered and will be installed soon. To provide funding for this project, the Vestry has approved a withdraw of up to $70,000 from the Capital Fund portion of our investments. We are most grateful for the generosity of our benefactors whose stewardship to our parish have built the Capital Fund to be used for major projects. Thank you for your patience as we complete this project.

Altar Guild Workshop & Advent Prep Day
Saturday, November 29, 9am

An Altar Guild workshop will be held on Saturday morning, November 29, starting at 9:00. Please join us to learn the preparation of vessels and vestments used in our Eucharistic services. We will prepare for the season of Advent as well as polish items to be used during the Christmas season.

Thirsty Thursdays for Bordentown's Bravest
Every Thursday, 5pm-10pm

Christ Church has partnered with the Farnsworth House to raise money for our city's fire companies. Come out to the Farnsworth House on Thursday's from 5pm to 10pm, and $1 from any beverage purchase (even coffee and other soft drinks) will go to Consolidated Fire Association and Hope Hose Humane.

HomeFront Ministry

Once a month the HomeFront Committee prepares a meal for the homeless people residing in local motels.  These meals are picked up by a couple from another area church & delivered to the motels. We are always in need of more money, and now, more than ever, as the funds we have been working from are running low.  If you  able to help us with this cause, you will find specially marked envelopes on the Welcome Table at the entrance to the church.  This will allow your contributions to  be listed on your end-of-the-year Giving Statement.

In addition to money, we are always in need of help. The workload, as well as the amount of people coming to help, varies from month to month.  Sometimes, you will work like crazy.  Sometimes you will have some down time to have a coffee & chat in between tasks.
We are also seeking to establish a list of people to call on in advance to cook at home & bring on Sunday morning.  For example, maybe you might be asked to cook a couple chickens & dice the meat, or fry up a couple of pounds of ground beef.  We will definitely be needing volunteers to cook bone-in turkey breasts for our  meal prep on December 21.  When such help is needed, you would be called in advance to see if you had the time to help with that month's meal.  If you  would like to participate in this request, please contact Gloria Jukes (609-883-9895).

Thank you for any help you are able to offer.  This is a very worthy cause without any administrative expenses.  It allows you to become involved in a very  worthwhile effort on whatever scale is works for you.
Electronic Giving

The Parish has partnered with ADP to provide an alternative way to contribute to the parish through Electronic Giving.  This benefits you by making your pledge and occasional giving fast and easy, and the parish will benefit from a reliable, more efficient and more convenient means to process contributions.  To sign up for electronic giving, go to our website at www.ccbtown.com - click on the donation link, and you will be able to select from various opportunities to contribute to our parish and activities. If you have any questions regarding the new electronic giving service, please call the parish office at 298-2348.

This Week in Church History

October 30, 1451: Christopher Columbus, who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean both to spread Christianity and (as his crew members complained) to "make a great lord of himself," is born.

October 30, 1821: Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevski, whose works (including Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamozov, and Notes from the Underground) reflect his deep Russian Orthodox faith, is born.

October 30, 1883: Bob Jones, Sr., one of Fundamentalism's most renowned evangelists and founder of Bob Jones University, is born.

November 2, 1164: Thomas a Becket, archbishop of Canterbury, leaves for France for a six-year exile after being condemned in royal court for "ingratitude" toward England's Henry II, who had once been his dear friend.

November 2, 1533: Harried by Catholic authorities, John Calvin flees Paris by lowering himself out a window with a bed-sheet rope and disguising himself as a farmer, complete with a hoe over his shoulder. He spent three years as a fugitive before settling in Geneva.

November 3, 753 (traditional date): Pirminius, the first Abbot of Reichenau (Germany) dies. His pastoral instruction book, Scarapsus, contains the earliest evidence for the present form of the Apostles' Creed.

November 3, 1534: The British Parliament passes the Supremacy Act, officially making England Protestant and putting the English monarch at the head of the nation's church.

November 3, 1600: Richard Hooker, an Anglican rector whose book Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity is a classic on the relationship between church and state, dies in England.

November 3, 1966: John Lennon tells reporters that his band, the Beatles, is "more popular than Jesus," touching off a firestorm of controversy.

November 4, 1646: The Massachusetts Bay Colony makes it a capital offense to deny that the Bible is the Word of God.

November 4, 1740: English clergyman Augustus Toplady, author of the hymn "Rock of Ages," is born.

November 4, 1958: Angelo Roncalli becomes Pope John XXIII. Though his papacy was expected to be uneventful, his convening of the Second Vatican Council and his changing of the church's attitudes toward non-Catholics were milestones for Roman Catholics.

Saint of the Week
St. Serenus the Gardener
Hermit & Martyr, 302

Hermit and martyr, also called Cerneuf Born in Greece, he supposedly fled to Sirmium (modern Mitrovica, in the Balkans) where he lived as a hermit and became well-known for the beauty of his garden. According to legend, he hid during the persecution of Christians and, upon returning, scolded a woman for wandering in his garden at an inappropriate time. She went home and told her husband, a member of the imperial guard, of the disrespectful treatment she had received. He reported the event to co-Emperor Maximian who ordered a magistrate to look into the matter. Serenus was exonerated for his harsh treatment of the woman, but the magistrate learned that he was a Christian and, as Serenus refused to make sacrifice to the gods, the magistrate ordered him beheaded.

Grace and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ Church is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey, His Excellency William H. Stokes, Bishop. Our parish reflects the joy found in Anglo-Catholic worship and tradition, taking the joy and strength found at the Altar and bringing it out into the world in service to our neighbours.

In Christ,
