Fr. Salmon's 50th Ordination Anniversary Event
Friday, October 31, 7pm at St. Mary's Burlington

St. Mary's will host a celebration of the
50th Anniversary of Fr.  Alan Salmon's Ordination to the Sacred Priesthood.
Fr. Salmon has served his entire ministry in the Diocese of New Jersey, retiring after a long tenure as Rector of Christ Church, Riverton.  In retirement he has continued to serve in various congregations for varying lengths of time-from individual Sundays to months at a time.  He has been a good friend to Christ Church, and is always first choice for a priest to fill in when the Rector is absent.  We will be sharing this occasion with Bishop Stokes, members of Christ Church, Riverton, and other lay and clergy friends of Fr. Salmon.

Fr. Salmon's ordination, 50 years ago, was on the Eve of All Saints' Day-Hallowe'en -and although many activities may take place on that evening, I hope you will make every effort to attend and celebrate Fr. Salmon's long and faithful service as a Priest of the Church.
From Fr. Matt

As we mark the anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, please continue to remember the victims of the storm; to work toward restoring what was lost to our neighbors and to our state; to give thanks for those who responded and who continue to respond; to pray for those who will never fully recover; and to pray for those killed by the storm.
Turn Your Clocks Back!

This Sunday morning at 2am marks the end of Daylight Saving Time, so it's time to "fall back" to Eastern Standard Time. Remember to turn your clocks back one hour and get your extra hour of sleep!

Empty Your Pockets for Semper Fido

In the spirit of both the Blessing of the Animals and Veteran's Day coming up in November, we're hoping to raise much needed funds for Semper Fido.  Semper Fido, Inc. is registered non-profit committed to helping in the rehabilitation of returning service men and women suffering from traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder while also  saving unwanted animals from shelters and rescues.  Semper Fido's service dogs often come from rescue groups and shelters, and their work benefits both those who sacrificed themselves for our freedoms, and the dogs that may have had no hope of a forever home.

Returning soldiers who've been paired with service dogs say this it is truly life changing, allowing them to live more full  lives and feel more safe and secure each day.  Training is intensive and typically takes 6-9 months, during which time Semper Fido provides for their care and feeding in addition to the very  rigorous training needed for a dog to work as a service animal.  The total cost to train a dog for service work like this averages $10,500, and there are many more service men and women who need them than they can provide for.   Their greatest need  is funding to pay for the training.

The camouflage coin boxes at the back of the church have a slot cut into them, and we're hoping that you'll take one and drop your loose change (bills are fine too!) into it each day from now through Thanksgiving.  A little bit each day adds up quickly, and by the end of November we'll total up the contents of all these boxes and present our collective offering to Semper Fido.  When your coin box is full, please bring it to Mass and return it or turn it into the parish office.  If you fill a box quickly and want another, we'll have more each week.

Please help us help Semper Fido to continue their mission and give back to the men and women who have given so much to serve our country.

Citrus!

orangeOur Citrus Fruit Sale is now underway and we will be taking orders  through November 16. Delicious and juicy Tangelos, along with Pink Grapefruit and Navel Oranges will be available before the holiday season. The fruit is picked, packed and shipped Grade A fancy fruit within 72 hours. If you have any questions, please call Andy Law at 298-9171 or Donna Kirk at the church office 298-2348.

Acolyte Practice
November 9, 11:15amOrder of St. Vincent

Fr. Matt is looking for a few good men, women, and children to join the Order of St. Vincent this Fall. Adults and children 12 and older are welcome and encouraged to
become acolytes.

Take the opportunity this fall to learn how to serve at the altar! Serving at the altar is a simple but remarkably rewarding way to serve our Lord.

Spaghetti Dinner Report

Our Parish Spaghetti Dinner was a smashing success! We raised money and had a great time at dinner. Our thanks to all those who worked in the planning and execution of the dinner, to everyone who came out, and to Matt McElmoyl, who made the sauce.

2015 Fundraising

We are planning now for our 2015 fundraising activities. Loris Johnson and Darrell  Vigh are co-chairing a Gift Basket auction in the fall of 2015. Many hands will be needed to make this a great success. We will need folks to help with all phases of the event, from planning to the actual event. If you would like to help, please reach out to Loris or Darrell.

We will also be participating in the Coke rewards program, to earn points that can be redeemed for Gift Cards for the auction. Stay tuned for more information on how you can help with this idea.

There are also other fundraising events that we need someone to organize; like the pot luck/spaghetti dinners and raffles. If you are interested in working on these short term events, please contact Darrell.
2015 Stewardship Materials

In an effort to save time, paper, and postage, it is our intent to use email to circulate our 2015 Pledge Cards and Stewardship materials. Please email office@ccbtown.com with your updated email information. If you prefer to  receive this material in paper form, we will have packets in the back of the Church for pick up. If you are interested in eliminating paper - please see our electronic giving option on the Church's website. Any questions, call the office or Darrell Vigh.

Church Boiler

Our church boiler, unfortunately, needs to be replaced. We have contracted with Liberty Mechanical Services to dismantle and remove and H.B. Smith boiler installed in 1996. The new equipment has been ordered and will be installed soon. To provide funding for this project, the Vestry has approved a withdraw of up to $70,000 from the Capital Fund portion of our investments. We are most grateful for the generosity of our benefactors whose stewardship to our parish have built the Capital Fund to be used for major projects. Thank you for your patience as we complete this project.

This Week in Church History

October 22, 4004 BC:: According to James Ussher, the well-respected and scholarly Anglican primate of the Irish Church in the early seventeenth century, God created the universe on this date at 9:00 a.m. GMT.

October 22, 1811: Pianist Franz Liszt, known for his Romantic orchestras and songs, but also the author of more than 60 religious works (including the song known today as "Fairest Lord Jesus"), is born in Raiding, Hungary.

October 22, 1844: Between 50,000 and 100,000 followers of Baptist lay preacher William Miller prepared for "The Day of Atonement"-the day Jesus would return. Jesus didn't, and though Miller retained his faith in Christ's imminent return until his death, he blamed human mistakes in Bible chronologies for "The Great Disappointment." Several groups arose from Miller's following, including the Seventh-Day Adventists.

October 24, 1260: France's Chartres Cathedral, the purest example of Gothic architecture, is consecrated.

October 24, 1648: The Peace of Westphalia ends central Europe's Thirty Years War. Extending equal political rights to Catholics and Protestants (including religious minorities), the peace treaties also marked the first use of the term "secularization" (in discussing some church property that was to be distributed among the warring parties).

October 27, 625: Honorius I begins his reign as pope. His belief in Monothelitism (that Christ had only one will, not two), since condemned as heresy by the Roman Catholic Church, have long been a point of conflict for Catholic discussion of papal infallibility.

October 27, 1746: Scottish Presbyterian pastor and theologian William Tennant obtains a charter for the College of New Jersey, which is now Princeton. He had founded the school in 1726 as a seminary to train his sons and others for ministry. Presidents of the college later included Aaron Burr, Jonathan Edwards, and Reverend John Witherspoon, who led the school to national prominence.

October 27, 1978: The complete New International Version (NIV) of the Bible is published.

October 28, 312: According to tradition, on this date the 32-year-old Roman emperor Constantine defeated Maxentius at Milvian Bridge. Before the battle, Constantine had seen the symbol of Jesus, chi-rho, in a vision, accompanied with the words "By this sign conquer." He is considered Rome's first Christian emperor.

October 28, 1646: At Nonantum, Massachusetts, missionary John Eliot preaches the first worship service for Native Americans in their native language.

October 28, 1949: Jim Elliot, missionary to Ecuador's Auca Indians, writes in his journal the most famous of his sayings: "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."

October 28, 1958: The Roman Catholic patriarch of Venice, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, is unexpectedly elected pope, taking the name John XXIII. Expected to be a mere caretaker in office, he became one of the Catholic church's most activist popes, convening the Second Vatican Council in 1962.

October 28, 1992: The Korean Hyoo-go (Korean for "rapture") movement, led by prophet Lee Jang Rim, predicts that this is the day of the rapture.

Saint of the Week
St. Eskill
Missionary, 1080

English missionary to Sweden, a companion of St. Sigfrid, his kinsman. Eskill went with St. Sigfrid to Sweden.

There he was consecrated as the bishop of Strangnas and evangelized Sodermanland. King Sweyn the Bloody, the pagan successor to the murdered Christian King Inge, revived pagan practices. Eskill denounced a pagan festival and was stoned to death by order of the king.

Posting in the Angelus

Please let Fr. Matt know if you would like any announcements to be included in the weekly Angelus. Submissions must be made by Tuesday noon.
Grace and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ Church is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey, His Excellency William H. Stokes, Bishop. Our parish reflects the joy found in Anglo-Catholic worship and tradition, taking the joy and strength found at the Altar and bringing it out into the world in service to our neighbours.

In Christ,

Fr. Matt+
