 | |
October 4-5   The Cranberry Festival is coming!  It's almost time once again for one of the City's best loved festivals and one of our most successful fundraising events of the year.   Volunteers will be needed to staff the table and to provide baked goods and fudge for sale.  Christ Church bakers and candymakers have a well-earned reputation for having some of the best goodies to be found at the Cranberry Festival, and there are quite a few Festival regulars   who come to our table each year looking for their favorites.  A detailed sheet with tips for bakers and our Christ Church Easy Fudge recipe and sign up sheets are at the table at the rear of the sanctuary, so please let us know if you can help. Please note:  if you're bringing baked goods or fudge, please bring them to the Christ Church table at Farnsworth and West Church Street (in front of the book store) between 9:00 and 10:00 on the morning of the 5th.

 | This Week in Church History
 | | |   September 18, 1884: People pack out the Brooklyn Tabernacle for the funeral of Jerry McAuley, founder of New York's Water Street Mission and a pioneer among American rescue missions.   September 19, 821: Theodulf, poet, scholar, secretary of education, and bishop of Orleans during Charlemagne's reign is buried. He wrote hymns, among which his best remembered is "Gloria Laus et Honor" or "All Glory, Laud and Honor / To thee Redeemer King."   September 19, 1853: Baptist missionary pioneer J. Hudson Taylor sets sail from England for China at the age of 21.   September 19, 1888: Missionary Jonathan Goforth begins a tour of the North Honan region of China, where he would spend the rest of his life preaching, establishing churches, and ministering to the needy.   September 19, 1955: Mission Aviation pilot Nate Saint spots the Auca villages in the Amazon jungle. The Auca massacred him and his companions on January 6, 1956.   September 20, 1224: On or about this date, on Italy's secluded Mount Alvernia, Francis of Assisi reportedly prayed, "O Lord, I beg of you two graces before I die-to experience in myself in all possible fullness the pains of your cruel passion, and to feel for you the same love that made you sacrifice yourself for us." Soon his heart was filled with both joy and pity, and wounds appeared on his hands, feet, and side. He reportedly carried these scars (called stigmata) until his death in 1226.   September 20, 1565: Spanish sea captain Menendez reportedly wipes out French Huguenots in Florida.   September 20, 1883: Albrecht Alt, German Lutheran scholar of the Old Testament, is born in Stuebach, Bavaria. His book Biblia Hebraica, which he edited with R. Kittel, became the standard critical text of the Old Testament for Bible students.   September 23, 1595: Led by Fray Juan de Silva, the Spanish begin an intensive missionary campaign in the American southeast. In the following two years, 1,500 Native Americans in the area of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina convert to the Catholic faith.   September 23, 1857: Layman-turned-evangelist Jeremiah C. Lanphier holds a lunchtime prayer meeting for businessmen on Fulton Street in New York City. At first, no one shows up, but by the program's third week, the 40 participants requested daily meetings. Other cities begin similar programs, and a revival-sometimes called "The Third Great Awakening"-catches fire across America.   --taken from Christianity Today

 | Saint of the Week | | | St. Finbar
   Bishop & Abbot, 620
He was the son of an artisan and a lady of the Irish royal court. Born in Connaught, Ireland, and baptized Lochan, he was educated at Kilmacahil, Kilkenny, where the monks named him Fionnbharr (white head) because of his light hair; he is also known as Bairre and Barr. He went on pilgrimage to Rome with some of the monks, visiting St. David in Wales on the way back. Supposedly, on another visit to Rome the Pope wanted to consecrate him a bishop but was deterred by a vision, notifying the pope that God had reserved that honor to Himself, and Finbar was consecrated from heaven and then returned to Ireland. At any rate, he may have preached in Scotland, definitely did in southern Ireland, lived as a hermit on a small island at Lough Eiroe, and then, on the river Lee, founded a monastery that developed into the city of Cork, of which he was the first bishop. His monastery became famous in southern Ireland and attracted numerous disciples. Many extravagant miracles are attributed to him, and supposedly, the sun did not set for two weeks after he died at Cloyne about the year 633. His feast day is September 25th.
