Prayer for Christ Church
Almighty and everliving God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth, hear our prayers for Christ Church Parish. Strengthen the faithful, arouse the  careless, and restore the penitent. Grant us all things necessary for our common life, and bring us all to be of one heart and mind within thy holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Evensong & Benediction - June 1, 4pm

Raffle tickets have arrived for our Spring Super 50/50 raffle, drawing June 1.  It's a short selling season, and tickets have been mailed to all parish households.  As usual, prizes will be 25%, 15% and 10% of ticket proceeds, so the more tickets we sell, the bigger the prizes and the more funds we raise for the parish.  Winners will be drawn at the picnic following Choral Evensong and Benediction at 4:00 p.m on Sunday, June 1. We're looking forward to a night of beautiful choral music, Benediction and great fellowship and food.

We hope to see you there!

Calling All Graduates

Is there a graduate in the family?  If so, please phone or email the parish office as soon as possible and no later than Wednesday, May 28, with the name and school (and degree, if applicable).  We want to recognize and remember in prayer on Sunday, June 1, all members of the parish who are graduating from either high school or college.

Electronic Giving

The Parish has partnered with ADP to provide an alternative way to contribute to the parish through Electronic Giving.  This benefits you by making your pledge and occasional giving fast and easy, and the parish will benefit from a reliable, more efficient and more convenient means to process contributions.  To sign up for electronic giving, go to our website at www.ccbtown.com, click on the donation link, and you will be able to select from various opportunities to contribute to our parish and activities. If you have any questions regarding the new electronic giving service, please call the parish office at 298-2348.

This Week in Church History

May 18, 1291: The last Christian territory taken by the Crusaders, Acre, falls to the Sultan of Egypt.

May 18, 1834: Sheldon Jackson, Presbyterian missionary to the frontier West and Alaska, is born in Minaville, New York. Jackson's reputation for ministering to the spiritual, physical, and social needs of both natives and settlers earned him the nicknames "Bishop of All Beyond" and "Apostle to Alaska".

May 18, 1920: Karol Wojtyla (who would take the name John Paul II when elected pope) is born in Wadowice, Poland.

May 19, 804: Alcuin of York, an English scholar who became an adviser to Charlemagne and the most prominent figure in the Carolingian Renaissance (the rebirth of classical learning under Charlemagne), dies. He also devised a handwriting system using both small and capital letters for easier reading.

May 19, 1805: Joshua V. Himes, best known for promoting William Miller's Second Advent movement, is born. Miller predicted the Second Coming between 1843 and 1844. When this did not happen, many followers deserted; others reorganized themselves as Seventh-Day Adventists.

May 20, 325: Emperor Constantine convenes the first Ecumenical Council in Nicea (now Iznik), Bithynia, to discuss Arianism, a heresy arguing that Christ was subordinate to God the Father. "I entreat you," Constantine said at the opening of the Council of Nicea, "to remove the causes of dissension among you and to establish peace." The council attempted to resolve the bitter conflict by anathematizing Arius (Arianism's founder) and ordering the burning of all his books, but the conflict continued to rage for decades.

May 20, 1277: Pope John XXI dies when his castle ceiling collapses on him. The name was a mistake-there was never a John XX.

May 20, 1506: Christopher Columbus, who saw himself as a missionary, not just an explorer, dies impoverished in Spain at age 55. "I hope in our Lord that it will be the greatest honor to Christianity that, unexpectedly, has ever come about," he concluded in the log of his first voyage to the Americas.

May 20, 1690: John Eliot, English missionary to the Native Americans of New England and publisher of the first Bible printed in America, dies.

May 20, 1960: Six months before John F. Kennedy, a Roman Catholic, is elected president of the United States, the Southern Baptist Convention condemns the election of Catholics to public office. "When a public official is inescapably bound by the dogma and demands of the church," it declared, "he cannot consistently separate himself from these."

Saint of the Week
St. Paschal Baylon
Mystic, 1592

Franciscan lay brother and mystic. Born to a peasant family at Torre Hermosa, in Aragon, on Whitsunday, he was christened Pascua in honor of the feast. According to accounts of his early life, Paschal labored as a shepherd for his father, performed miracles, and was distinguished for his austerity. He also taught himself to read. Receiving a vision which told him to enter a nearby Franciscan community, he became a Franciscan lay brother of the Alcantrine reform in 1564, and spent most of his life as a humble doorkeeper. He practiced rigorous asceticism and displayed a deep love for the Blessed Sacrament, so much so that while on a mission to France, he defended the doctrine of the Real Presence against a Calvinist preacher and in the face of threats from other irate Calvinists. Paschal died at a friary in Villareal, and was canonized in 1690. In 1897 Pope Leo XIII declared him patron of all eucharistic confratemities and congresses. Since 1969, his veneration has been limited to local calendars.

Grace and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ Church is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey, His Excellency William H. Stokes, Bishop. Our parish reflects the joy found in Anglo-Catholic worship and tradition, taking the joy and strength found at the Altar and bringing it out into the world in service to our neighbours.

In Christ,
