The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Farm to School Program will honor school gardens this year with its new 'Golden Shovel Awards.' New or existing school gardens are eligible. Interested educators are asked to keep track of their gardens' progress throughout the school year and apply for the awards program by April 2, 2015. Seeking Award
Winning Teachers

   Florida teachers in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade who use agriculture in innovative ways to teach reading, writing, math, science, nutrition and other core subject areas are invited to apply for the Florida Agriculture in the Classroom (FAITC) Excellence in Teaching about Agriculture Award for 2015. The deadline for online applications is Nov. 14, 2014.
   Four winners will be selected - one each for elementary, middle school, middle school agri-science and high school levels. One overall winner will be selected from the four, and that person will go on to compete for the National Agriculture in the Classroom Organization's Excellence in Teaching about Agriculture Award.
   The four winners will receive all expenses paid trips to the 2015 National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference 'Unbridled Possibilities' scheduled for June 16-20 in Louisville, KY. In addition, the overall winner will receive a $500 honorarium and the other three winners will receive a $250 honorarium each. For an easy online application, Click Here. Pollination, Pumpkins and Corn at Fall Workshop
  Pollination and math lessons that use pumpkins and corn and tours of a plant tissue culture facility and corn maze are part of the FAITC Fall Workshop 'Sprouting Success in Your Classroom' Thursday Oct. 23 in Apopka near Orlando. For only $10, workshop participants will receive K-12 lesson plans, lunch and transportation to the farm tours. There are only a few spots left so register now at Click Here
  
 
      $500 School Garden
     Mini Grants Available
   FAITC continues to offer $500 school garden mini grants to Florida teachers in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Schools with new or existing gardens are eligible. Schools can only receive one mini grant each school year. For more information and an easy, online application, Click Here and scroll down.

   Help FAITC Schedule Workshops
   FAITC is asking for input from teachers and informal educators about the best time to schedule its workshops. To better accommodate educators' busy schedules, FAITC would like to know if its better to schedule workshops on weekdays or Saturdays.
