Happy International Women's Day! On this day we celebrate the victories our sisters have won in the struggle for women's empowerment, but we also recognize that we - men and women - have a long way to go before gender equality and all women's rights are realized worldwide.

In the coming two weeks, Muslims for Progressive Values (MPV) is partaking in the largest international women's rights conference of the year, the C ommission on the Status of Women Session 59 (CSW59) at the United Nations in New York. Alongside other women's rights activists from all over the world, we will be discussing the progress made in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and opportunities for achieving gender equality in the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

As a Muslim organization, we will be advocating for the promotion of women's rights as inherent to Islam and launching our #ImamsForShe Initiative.

#ImamsForShe

#ImamsForShe is a MPV-led initiative to encourage and support Imams, Muslim leaders and Islamic scholars to promote and advocate for gender equality and women's empowerment through Qur'anic scripture and Islamic principles. We support Imams, Muslim leaders and Islamic scholars who are debunking patriarchal and misogynist interpretations of the Qur'an and the Hadith and who are leading Muslim communities to embrace gender parity, to be free from violence against women and girls and to empower women to reach their full potential.
