MAY 2013
PRESIDENT'S FORUM

As you may have noticed, there has been a recent increase in joint communications and events from Phoenix Ad Club and Ad 2 Phoenix. Our goal is to bring a long overdue blending of both organizations. You'll be seeing a lot more co-branded messaging coming your way. All of our events will be co-hosted, membership benefits shared and community engagement done together.

Now you may be asking, "Why are there still 2 separate clubs?" Basically, since both chapters are part of the national AAF and Ad 2 organizations respectively, there are established guidelines for club operations.

To make it as simple as possible, if you are 32 and under, you pay your dues to Ad 2; if you're over 32, you pay your dues to AAF. Since Ad 2's target membership is younger, membership fees are lower. We will soon be announcing our new membership pricing structure that will include options to cover both dues and our new "unlimited" corporate membership. (Specific details to be announced next week!)

I also want to address confusion over restrictions or requirements for events and benefits (i.e., member discounts, individuals 32+ wondering if they can attend an Ad 2 Phoenix event and vice versa). If you are a member of one organization -- you are considered a member of both! Benefits and offerings transcend both clubs.

Speaking of events, we have some awesome ones coming up and I hope you will be able to attend. Our second annual Creative Career Expo is May 7 at ASU SkySong. If you are an employer looking to hire - or an individual seeking a new position - this is a can't miss event. Please note: there are also a few spots left for exhibitors and sponsors.

Finally - there is a fantastic line up of speakers and panelists scheduled for ADMERICA! - the annual AAF national conference which is being held in Phoenix this year! Discount and a la carte pricing will be available for local members. I'm also super excited to see the list of the National ADDY award winners (congrats to our District ADDY winners too!); we had some stellar creative talent from our local market representing us.

If you have a question regarding membership, upcoming events or just want to provide feedback, please feel free to contact us.

Cheers,

Mark Anthony Munoz

Phoenix Ad Club President

NOTABLE EVENTS

EXHIBITORS/SPONSORS - There are just a few exhibitor and sponsor spots available for the 2nd annual Creative Career Expo that we're hosting on Tuesday, May 7 at ASU SkySong. Last year's event attracted 200+ individuals and we expect this year's to bring many more Valley residents seeking employment in advertising, marketing, design and other creative industries!

Here are just a few of the reasons why your agency/company should register to participate:

1. You're hiring - we attracted 200+ individuals last year and this year we expect MANY more to attend!
2. Public relations - it's always a good thing to get the logo/name and some of the faces of your agency/company out there!
3. INTERNS - even if you don't have any paid positions available right now there will be plenty individuals in attendance who are looking for experience and would be thrilled to gain it through an internship at your agency/company!
4. You will be hiring in the near future - even if you aren't hiring right now, it doesn't hurt to check out the talent that's out there and gather some resumes to help get you started when you do have a position open up!

IN THE KNOW: LEGAL EASE

By Susan D. Brienza, Esq. Ryley Carlock & Applewhite

Summary of March 12, 2013 FTC Guide, "Dot Com Disclosures"

Conclusion of New FTC Guide on Disclosures

The Federal Trade Commission ("FTC") has broad powers to regulate and monitor all advertisements for goods and services (with the exception of a few industries such as banking and aviation)-advertisements in any medium whatsoever, including Internet and social media promotions.   Under long-standing FTC statutes, regulations and policy, all marketing claims must be true, accurate, not misleading or deceptive, and supported by sound scientific or factual research.  Often, in order to "cure" a potentially deceptive claim, a disclaimer or a disclosure is required, e.g., "The following blogs are paid reviews."

Recently, on March 12, 2013, the Federal Trade Commission published a revised version of its 2000 guide known as Dot Com Disclosures, after a two-year process. The new FTC staff guidance, .com Disclosures: How to Make Effective Disclosures in Digital Advertising, "takes into account the expanding use of smartphones with small screens and the rise of social media marketing. It also contains mock ads that illustrate the updated principles."  See the FTC's press release regarding its Dot Com Disclosures guidance and the 53-page guide itself. I noted with some amusement that the FTC ends this press release and others with:  "Like the FTC on Facebook, follow us on Twitter. . ."

Everything You Need to Know About RTB and Programmatic Digital Media Buying

Real-time bidding is known as the "next big thing" in digital media and is expected to make up 19% of all display ad spending. Goodway COO Jay Friedman demystifies RTB to help you gain a deeper understanding of this complex subject including the myths, benefits, and future predictions.
