Making the First Day Easier
|
You've just moved to the neighborhood and now school is starting. Here are some tips to help with easing into that first day of school.
-
If your child seems nervous, remind him or her that there are probably a lot of students who are uneasy about the first day of school. This may be at any age. Teachers know that students are nervous and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible.
-
Point out the positive aspects of starting school to create positive anticipation about the first day. Your child will see old friends and meet new ones. Refresh his or her positive memories about previous years, when he or she may have returned home after the first day with high spirits because of a good time.
-
Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your student can walk to school or ride on the bus.
-
If it is a new school for your child, attend any available orientations and take an opportunity to tour the school before the first day.
-
If you feel it is needed, drive your child (or walk with him or her) to school and pick him or her up on the first day.

Barns Brinton House
|
The Chadds Ford Historical Society works to share the history of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. With three 18th century buildings that are open to the public seasonally - the John Chads House, the Chads Springhouse, and the Barns Brinton House. They also offer a variety of fun and educational programs, special events, summer camps, and group tours.
The land around Chadds Ford was inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Indians centuries before the Europeans arrived. In 1638, the first European explorers, the Swedes, discovered the Brandywine and by 1700, English Quakers made up most of the population in the area.
In 1707 "Ye Great Road to Nottingham," now U.S. Route 1, was laid out from Baltimore to Chester. It was one of the five main routes from Philadelphia in the early 18th century.
During the late 1730's and 1740's when John Chads operated a ferry service across the Brandywine, the crossing place became known as "Chadds Ford." About 1827, a bridge to span the river was built.
On September 11, 1777, Continental troops formed a line of defense along the eastern bank of the Brandywine. George Washington had chosen this spot to halt the British advance toward Philadelphia. General William Howe split his forces to outflank the Continental army in the Battle of the Brandywine.
A good portion of Chadds Ford's unique romance derives from its landscape and rich history of agriculture. Including a famous battle, milling industry, road and rail transportation, and extraordinary art. Chads Ford is definitely a local destination you won't want to miss.

Share the Joy of a New Home |
|
| | Anne Pounds |
This is a portion of an article excerpted from Better Homes & Gardens, by "Mommy Shorts" blogger Ilana Wiles. When I read it I could feel their excitement, because I've felt it literally thousands of times on my welcome visits! It speaks so eloquently of why we love visiting new homeowners to welcome them. It's called "Share the joy," and a bit of this joy rubs off on each visit.
The first weekend we spent at the new house, we could not believe how amazing this small moment was: We had cooked and eaten breakfast together, then at some point the kids wandered off to play. My husband, Mike, and I were left to sip our coffee at our own pace. We were in one room while Mazzy (6) and Harlow (3) were in another, and everyone was FINE. In our New York City apartment, there is no separation-our living, dining, playroom, and kitchen are all one space, so we are always on top of each other. We needed more room, but after doing a lot of research, we realized we could basically buy this house out east on Long Island for the cost of a two- to three-bedroom upgrade in Manhattan. When we found this place, it was all dark floors and beige walls, but I knew I wanted it to feel like a summer house: airy, spacious, and vibrant, with bold pops of color. The first step was painting the walls and staining the floors white, and I knew I wanted to do something funky with the wall in the dining room. I wasn't sure about how a lot of the furniture in the house would come together, but I just knew that dining room was going to be amazing. If you ask the girls, Mazzy likes the city better, and Harlow prefers the house. But right now, they both are excited about the pretty serious vegetable garden they are helping Mike build. Let's just say there are a lot fewer excuses to watch your iPad here. Remember feeling that way when you moved into your new home? I do. I cried when we packed up the last box from our former home, but my brother-in-law and next-door neighbor-to-be said, "Anne, as soon as you close that door, you will stop crying and open a new chapter in your life." He was so right! The house we moved into needed top-to-bottom renovations, but it was right next to our dear sister and brother-in-law. It was such a thrill to plan the tearing out of the kitchen, the three bathrooms we would renovate, the carpeting of the basement, the painting, the plantings we would do. And yes, where the vegetable garden would go. So much space! We only moved ten miles away, but everything was new. It's a thrilling time, and I'm so glad we get to share your thrills, too.
