Summer: You Can See It From Here
There is so much to do in Southern Chester County and surrounding area!
Bob and Anne Pounds
Technically, it's not summer yet, but you sure can see it from here! A number of schools have ended for the school year, spring sports are over, and many kids are looking forward to starting various camps this summer.  Be sure to include the local resources in your family's plans this summer - many folks travel to Southern Chester County and its environs to experience all the events, parks, museums and activities we often take for granted. Be sure to reserve some time just to play in this beautiful region.

We hope you'll bring that feeling with you as you peruse this issue of Neighborly News. There are some important health tips for your family, a great day trip the children will enjoy, and a delicious recipe directly from Anne's kitchen.  Be sure to scroll all the way down and click on the sponsor logos to receive great offers and discounts for your home and family.

It's all part of our neighborly way of connecting you with all the valuable businesses, stores and resources in your community.

June is National Great Outdoors Month
Let's Get Outside
kids_hands_in_air.jpg
Through the years, we have grown
increasingly concerned about the Earth, its sustainability, and how to properly care for Her. Now, more than ever, we are focused on conscious living. We take extra care to consider how our actions will impact future generations. We work hard to use cleaning supplies that are good for the environment and for our children. We pack our children's lunches in reusable and BPA-free containers. We are making a concerted effort to make the world a better place.

Young people today are extremely active in environmental efforts involving preservation and conservation. There are many - simple - things we can do to encourage this quality in our children.

National Get Outdoors Day is an annual event encouraging outdoor activity. There are many official site locations throughout the United States. If you are unable to locate a site in your area, it is easy to nominate one. Do something different and turn your children on to a new experience in the great outdoors. Visit a public land reserve you have never been to. Find a waterfall, a canyon, or a forest that is just a day's drive away

June is a great time of year to be outside. Barbeques, picnics, and walks in the woods are great ways to spend family time outside. During this month, you will find promotions for camping, National Trails Day encouraging hiking, and National Fishing and Boating Week. All of these activities are fun for the family and lead to an increased appreciation of the outdoors.

Volunteering at a local forest preserve, a community playground, or a nearby hiking trail will also strengthen the relationship your children have with mother Earth. Organizing a group to help clean up these areas send a strong message to your children. They will feel proud to have helped and will see, firsthand, how their efforts have an impact.

trekking_in_woods.jpg Start a new family tradition. Try an outdoor adventure you have never experienced before. Perhaps you'll go on a whitewater-rafting trip, try out a canoe, or go camping for the first time. Maybe it's fly fishing, going on a boat trip, or hiking a mountain that you'd like to try. Create opportunities to appreciate nature in a new way.

By encouraging and helping our children create a relationship with the outdoors, we are taking measures to ensure that the Earth will continued to be cared for.

Day Trippin' Part 2

Vertical Flight? Who Knew?

The American Helicopter Museum and Education Center located right here in Chester County, Pa. is one of only three museums in the World specializing in helicopters and vertical flight. It also does not disappoint! The American manufacturers who pioneered the development of the helicopter - including Piasecki, Boeing-Vertol and Pitcairn - were headquartered in Philadelphia and its suburbs, making the region the cradle of the nation's helicopter industry.

Established in 1996 the 20,000-square-foot hangar is full of 70 years' worth of vintage helicopters and is a rotorwing historian's dream; here, vintage and modern aircraft demonstrate the copter's roles in war and rescue missions, agriculture and police surveillance. You'll see the only V-22 tilt-rotor Osprey in the world that's on public display, and have the chance to climb into some of the helicopters to fiddle with the dials, switches and pedals.

But it's not all pseudo-piloting: The museum has many exhibits on how copters actually work and how they differ from fixed-wing aircraft. There are also films about the helicopter's commercial and military purposes as well as demonstrations of what may be in the future for the rotorcraft industry.

Lighten Your Outdoor Decor this Summer

Warmer temperatures, bright blue skies, and sunny days are luring you outside. And if you're planning to do any of your eating, entertaining, or lounging out there, then it's time to rethink how that area looks and feels. Short on space? A few square inches can go a long way. Tight budget? Work with what you already own. No garden or greenery? No big deal. From yards and terraces to patios and porches, these easy decorating ideas can work for any spot you have big plans for beautifying. Have a peek...
Try these outdoor ideas to illuminate your newly decorated backyard or porch.

Country Living
When it comes to outdoor dining, anything goes. But to capture an easygoing escape-to-the-weekend-home feeling, make an attempt to separate yourself from your daily routine. Start by setting the table and chairs on the lawn and away from your home, which will create a dining experience that is unique and unexpected.

Swinging Pretty
You could have all the space in the world, yet still head to the same seat every time you step outside. Longing for your own special escape? Suspend a swinging seat bench in the corner of a wooden deck to help you breeze through those lazy days of summer.

Natural Charm
Got space? Reimagine a room-one without walls, that is. Create an intimate gathering space that's prepped for entertaining by surrounding the table with a wicker sofa, freestanding umbrella, and fire pit.

Paint Your Furniture
Give your porch furniture a new look by adding a fresh coat of paint when decorating for summer. You can paint wicker, metal, or wood furniture easily and give it a dramatic look.

Add Flowers
Flowers and porches go togetherwhen decorating for summer. This is another great way to add color and pizazz to your porch this summer. Color coordinate your flower's colors with your porch furniture, cushions, or other accent pieces to "pull it all together" when decorating. For summer fun, don't forget the flower pots.

Along the Welcome Trail
Top 10 Reasons to Patronize Local Businesses
Anne Pounds
  1. Strong and thriving local enterprises mean we consumers get the benefit of diverse product and service offerings-one-of-of-kind stuff you won't find at Target, or anywhere else.
  2. Locally owned businesses strengthen communities by sustaining vibrant town centers, which can bring people together in a web of social and economic relationships, often around local causes.
  3. Important community decisions made locally by people who live in YOUR community means you can have a greater voice in the decision process. Your opinion and ideas have more weight.
  4. Locally owned businesses tend to reinvest their earned dollars back into the local economy, making your community stronger still.
  5. Locally-owned businesses create more community jobs and, in some sectors, pay better wages, have work environment and benefits, as well as further growth opportunities for the employee. (Mary's mother is a good customer, so wouldn't it be good business to pay Mary more than minimum wage when she is a first class worker?)
  6. Entrepreneurship makes a community vital. It provides a means for folks to move out of low-wage jobs. It fuels economic innovation and prosperity. Entrepreneurship inspires passion in owners. (who's more likely to mentor your wayward team... a passionate business owner who hired your kid for his first after-school job, or a Wal-Mart department manager?
  7. Public benefit: better land use and sprawl containment:  how often do we see the eyesore of an empty strip mall which never needed to be built?
  8. Local businesses often "re-use" a vacated spot in the town center, resulting in no new infrastructure need and more efficient use of public (taxpayer-funded) services.
  9. A vibrant walkable town center is attractive to homeowners and renters both and provides local shopping and job opportunities which don't ever require getting in a car! Result: Reduced sprawl, less use of autos, habitat loss, clogged highways, and air and water pollution. Also, attractive bustling town centers attract tourism, which also support a healthy business economy for you and me.
  10. Ability to "custom-shop" for what you've found and loved.  For instance, you have a favorite place to buy bread and the best scones, another for produce where your greengrocer gets in your favorite poblano peppers for your signature dish, another where your wine lady gives you a healthy percent off on a case of really good blended red she helped you find: and yet another to pick up the most unique baby gift which will be wrapped for you. And yet another for two quarts of homemade ice cream for Saturday night's dinner.  All within walking distance of one parking location or a walk into town! AND,  you might meet a neighbor or two along the way!
These are my ten reasons to encourage you to have a satisfying, enriching experience with local businesses, and it's why Welcome Neighbor and its welcoming women do what we do to reach out on behalf of these local businesses. Try them out.  Make a decision to be a loyal shopper to those who reward you with good prices, good service and maybe even knowing your name!
Send them your reviews... they will appreciate it!

Anne's in the Kitchen
Roasted Chicken with Potatoes, Arugula and Garlic Yogurt

This is a New York Times recipe by Melissa Clark, and appreciate that it is all in one easy dish (a sheet pan), can be made with most any cut of chicken, can double easily to feed a crowd, and in the summer can easily be done on the grill if you don't want to heat the oven.
