The weather has been more than a little uncooperative, but in fact, it IS spring, and we've been looking forward to it for a while. All of us at Welcome Neighbor find special enjoyment when the weather "breaks" because it makes those Welcome Calls a lot easier. It's also a wonderful time of year for new beginnings and trying something new.
We hope you'll bring that feeling with you as you peruse this issue of Neighborly News. There are some important health tips for women, spring crafts for the kids, and a delicious recipe directly from Anne's kitchen. Be sure to scroll all the way down and click on the sponsor logos to receive great offers and discounts for your home and family.
It's all part of our neighborly way of connecting you with all the valuable businesses, stores and resources in your community.
Happy Spring!

| April is Women's Eye Health and Safety Month |
| Five Things Every Woman Should Know About Eye Health |

Did you know women make up the majority of the 4.4 million Americans age 40 and older who are visually impaired or blind? Prevent Blindness has designated April as Women's Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month in an effort to educate women about their higher risk for vision loss as well as what they need to know about their eyes.
The following are five things you should know about vision and eye health:
1. More women than men are at risk for vision loss from eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. According to the National Eye Institute, more than 3 million women and more than 1.5 million men have dry eye. Dry eye is more common after menopause and women who experience menopause prematurely are more likely to have eye surface damage from dry eye.
2. More women are caregivers- Women often make the majority of their family's health care decisions. In addition to being responsible for their own health, women are often responsible as caregivers for the health care choices of their children, partners, spouses and aging parents. A woman making her vision health a priority positively impacts those around her, including those that depend on her care.
3. Keeping a healthy lifestyle also helps keep the eyes healthy, including exercising regularly, not smoking and following a healthy diet. Talk to a nutritionist about eating habits and a doctor before starting an exercise program. Make sure to always wear UV eye protection when outdoors.
Expectant mothers may also experience vision effects from migraine headaches, diabetes and high blood pressure. Glaucoma medications such as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors can be harmful to the developing baby. All pregnant women should discuss all medications and any changes in their vision immediately with their doctor.
Prevent Blindness created the program, See Jane See: Women's Healthy Eyes Now, to provide free education and resources on these topics and many more to help women better understand vision issues that are unique to them.

Anne making this dish for 18 guests, Easter Dinner 2016.
|

Gratin Dauphinois
This dish has become a family favorite, my go-to recipe for big dinner events. It's from the Dauphine region of France near the Italian border, and gratin is cheese, dauphinoise, potatoes
I first made it when Bob gave me the biggest Cuisinart made, the DLC10X, about 20 years ago, along with a cookbook to make vast quantities of really interesting food with it. The dish will make you a star to everyone you serve it to, and it goes with every entrée, or it can be one, it's so rich and delicious. It's also great because it involves no last-minute fuss and can be prepared earlier in the day. And there are no real complex "methods" and only 3 ingredients if you don't count salt and pepper.
 |
| |
Voila! Gratin Dauphinois
|
Whatever "main" dish you serve with this, make it simple and fairly unadorned. I guarantee they won't pay too much attention to the filet mignon! This becomes the star of the show!

| Welcome Neighbor Rep of the Month: Mary Ann Hollingsworth |
 |
| | Mary Ann Hollingsworth |

Mary Ann Hollingsworth has lived in Southern Chester County her whole life. When Mary Ann and her husband moved out to Ovations on Rte. 896, they were presented with the Welcome Neighbor basket and Mary Ann was so impressed, she started working with Welcome Neighbor five years ago. I
Mary Ann also is a realtor at Berkshire Hathaway at Jennersville, and she says the two jobs fit great together: "It is a wonderful opportunity to meet many new homeowners and welcome them to the area." In her free time Mary Ann loves going to the shore and hitting the casinos.
Thank you, Mary Ann, for the consistently warm and wonderful welcome you extend!

"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....", I was an image and color consultant, teaching skin care and "wearing your colors." I was asked by a good friend if I would teach a class to the Girl Scouts in her region. With all the possible topics in mind, I asked her what she wanted me to teach. We discussed some ideas, and then she said, "Or you could teach the Green Circle."
"What is that?" I asked.
And she told me something I never have been able to forget--such a simple concept, and so powerful. The Green Circle is a metaphor for life, and the idea is this. When your circle is green, you can always break an opening in it and expand it to include someone or something else in your circle. It's a way to consciously become more open to the new and different; the Green Circle can always be made bigger.
Suddenly, the Green Circle seemed more powerful to me than all the colors, skin care tips and other "girly" subjects those young girls would love to discuss.
Imagine breaking your circle and creating an opening. Who will come in? What will happen? We never know until we try it. Could be someone who is more (or less) religious than you. . .from a "developing country". . .of a different political persuasion. . .in a business or job which isn't something you'd aspire to. . .on a Paleo diet. . .a vegetarian or vegan. . .your neighbor who never smiles. . .the big guy at the gym huffing away on the elliptical, sent there by his doctor to avoid dying soon. . .the gay guy serving you your meal. . .
We Welcome Neighbor women do it every time we make a welcome visit, and it's what we love about our job! What would happen if you broke your circle and said, "Come on in?" Let me know when you give it a try!
