Wearin' of the Green and Other St. Patrick's Day Myths
How much do you really know about the day we all 'become Irish'?
St. Patrick's Day glasses
Planning to wear green, watch a parade and enjoy some corned beef in celebration of St. Patrick's Day this March 17? First, get your facts straight by exploring the truth behind common misconceptions about the holiday-and the man thought to have inspired it.

St. Patrick was Irish.
Though one of Ireland's patron saints, Patrick was born in what is now England, Scotland or Wales-interpretations vary widely-to a Christian deacon and his wife, probably around the year 390. According to the traditional narrative, at 16 he was enslaved by Irish raiders who attacked his home; they transported him to Ireland and held him captive there for six years. Patrick later fled to England, where he received religious instruction before returning to Ireland to serve as a missionary.

Green has historically been associated with St. Patrick's Day.
The Irish countryside may be many shades of green, but knights in the Order of St. Patrick wore a color known as St. Patrick's blue. Why did green become so emblematic of St. Patrick that people began drinking green beer, wearing green and, of course, dyeing the Chicago River green to mark the holiday he inspired? The association probably dates back to the 18th century, when supporters of Irish independence used the color to represent their cause.

St. Patrick banished snakes from the Emerald Isle.

Legend has it that Patrick stood on an Irish hillside and delivered a sermon that drove the island's serpents into the sea. While it's true that the Emerald Isle is mercifully snake-free, chances are that's been the case throughout human history. Water has surrounded Ireland since the end of the last glacial period, preventing snakes from slithering over; before that, it was blanketed in ice and too chilly for the cold-blooded creatures. Scholars believe the snake story is an allegory for St. Patrick's eradication of pagan ideology.
Anne's in the Kitchen

This month of March brings us St. Patrick's Day and a very early Easter. So I have two recipes to share, both of which will be fun to make with kids, both having something to do with potatoes, and both celebratory of the holidays.  Irish Potatoes are more Philadelphia than Irish and contain no potatoes.  These are VERY easy to make, and they delight everyone.  My thought is to double the batch, and in the second batch, add a few tablespoons of brandy or cognac or almost any interesting liquor you have around, and you will delight the adults in the crowd.  It really adds an extra dimension to the auld Irish Potato, darlin'.

The second recipe is from my dear late mother-in-law's "The Art of Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking;" and I would again consider adding maybe a bit of butter (and again maybe a bit of liquor to half the batch or a second batch).  And here a REAL potato is used!

Please do me a favor: go to our Facebook page and share how you like the recipes and who YOU enchanted with them!
Welcome Neighbor Rep of the Month: Pat Liebermann
Pat Liebermann
Pat Liebermann
Pat Liebermann is now celebrating her eighth year of our Welcome Neighbor program.  Pat enjoys visiting, meeting and greeting new residents in Avondale, Landenberg, and other southern Chester County areas, close to where she lives.

"Moving to a new home is stressful; and moving to a new area, or in some cases, a new country, is even more so.  This I did myself some 15 years ago, so I understand the needs very well.  I have worked and assisted with relocations of people both from overseas and within the U.S.," Pat says.  New homeowners really lover her visit, because her British accent lets them know she was once in their position.

In her free time she loves to travel and getting out locally as well to gain more information on new places, which she is always willing to share with people she visits.   Pat enjoys hiking in the local preserves, yoga, movies and also has been for some years strongly involved with animal rescue on behalf of a non-profit shelter.

Thank you, Pat, for the consistently warm and wonderful welcome you extend!
Along the Welcome Trail
By Anne Pounds
"Support Your Local Business"  This is a theme we have all heard one time or another.  I am not a huge fan of "supporting local business,"  because I believe a business is a profit-making enterprise, and they should earn business based on how well they provide goods and services.  Charities should be supported!

But I AM a huge fan of finding GREAT BUSINESSES and patronizing them.  I like small businesses that help me feel good about parting with my hard-earned money.  I like anticipating going there because it gives me satisfaction.  It happens when they have good stuff at good prices, when I feel cared for and possibly recognized as a fellow human being whose purchase is appreciated.  That's when something magical happens:  I tell everyone I know about what a nice experience it is to shop there or dine there or get my teeth cleaned there or get my eyeglasses there.  That's when we want this fine business to become a part of Welcome Neighbor, so that not only we ourselves can enjoy it, but we can make more magic happen by connecting that great business to new residents with our welcome offer cards and gifts.

And through Neighborly News, we can share what events, deals and new stuff they have going on each month with all the thousands of families we've visited over many years.  We only introduce those businesses who know how to make this kind of "consumer magic." It's part of our mission.
So try them out!  Bring your welcome offer card, and say hello.  They cared enough to present you with something good, so feel free to see if they live up to the promise we made.  Then we'll all feel good.
