Valentine's Day is a wonderful holiday because it celebrates the purpose of life. No, not chocolate, LOVE!
We all need to be cherished. But despite our good intentions, too often we forget to tell the people we love just how precious they are to us. Valentine's Day can be a wonderful opportunity to remind all of our loved ones (not only our sweethearts) how glad we are that they're in our lives.
1. Rethink Gifts.
Valentine's gifts should be about the heart to heart expressions that build intimacy and connection. That means handmade cards, extra loving time together, or massages, not purchased gifts.
If you must buy a gift, choose it using the GIFT test: does it create more Gratitude, Intimacy, Fondness and Trust between you, or does it just impress? In other words, a bottle of inexpensive champagne, some sandwiches, and an invitation to a massage and picnic supper in bed after the kids are asleep meets this test a lot better than jewelry or candy. For kids or adults, try one of the gift ideas below.
2. Alternate gift ideas:
- A Letter of Appreciation.
The best gift of all is always a simple letter to your loved ones detailing how grateful you are to have them in your life. Be as specific as possible; "the way you let me sleep in the morning while you make the kids breakfast" and "the way you sing off key" are even more satisfying than "You're lovable," because the recipient feels seen and appreciated.

Lack of exercise, a poor diet and other unhealthy habits can take their toll over the years. Anyone at any age can benefit from simple steps to keep their heart healthy.
- Choose a healthy eating plan. The food you eat can decrease your risk of heart disease and stroke.
- Be physically active. You can slowly work up to the recommended amount of activity.

Meet Welcome Neighbor Rep Eileen Sizer. Below, Eileen shares what she enjoys about her job:
As a former professional dancer, actress and musician and now a therapeutic movement therapist, I love working with Welcome Neighbor! Meeting new people and introducing them to the community and to local businesses who are trustworthy, excellent and so generous - It never feels like work! I meet the most interesting people from near and far, as far as the Ukraine and China. Having lived afar and abroad myself, I know what it means to have help finding new connections. I love that Welcome Neighbor combines the best of the personal home visit with cutting-edge digital and social networking. Peoples'
responses have been fabulous! They are very grateful and thoroughly interested in discovering our highly recommended businesses and their offers. They love the home visit and offers, along with continued special promotions only through Welcome Neighbor. I am grateful that many have become friends I can enjoy for a long time!

Along the Welcome Trail
I keep stumbling across the word "engagement" - as in working with your team, getting through to a specific audience, and of course, in marketing and advertising efforts. The truth is, engagement is very difficult to achieve due to everyday distractions such as relentless email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media. We almost exclusively watch what we've pre-recorded on TV, so we can forward through the commercials that teach us about a lot more than we want to know about bladder control, bi-polar disorder, dry eye syndrome and so much more.
It's the multi-media, 24/7 world we live in today. But we all can and should make an effort to both be engaging and engaged, especially in our personal interactions with those we love and spend time with every day. I have to remember to immediately put down my phone when Bob, my husband and partner, wants to talk.
And as for us at Welcome Neighbor, we go in person to welcome new homeowners so that we can engage with them in a warm way and help them find good connections to not only the businesses and the welcome gift offers they give, but to the many community resources we share. We get fully engaged!
Last month I helped a woman get a really low-priced monitoring service when she needed to upgrade her unmonitored alarm system, at about a third of the usual monthly cost. I helped someone else get directed to a dog park appropriate for her very small dog (the Concord park has the play areas separated by dog size), the local library and a book club to join. We helped another nice couple find an electrician, a dentist, and a landscaper who can enlarge their patio and put in some planting beds.
How about you? Will you engage with me to tell me what you've had enough of, and what you want more of, both in our welcome visits and in the "media messages" being hurled your way? Let's truly engage on Facebook - please
and make a comment on this topic. I would LOVE to hear from you! Thanks for traveling with me on the Welcome Trail.
Best, Anne

Anne in the Kitchen
The named blizzard Jonas has earned us an honest comfort food, and the Super Bowl has earned us some wings! So I have to give you two recipes.
The comfort food I tasted when visiting our family patriarch at his very posh assisted-living community. Uncle Joe graciously invited us all to brunch in the on-site restaurant, where we found a spread which would have made the Ritz Carlton proud to serve.
But virtually EVERYONE gravitated to a mystery dish, holding it up and saying, "Make sure you get some of this. . .you won't believe it." I took a small spoonful to decipher it. Delicious, but I couldn't identify it. Bread pudding? Apple Brown Betty? Nope--it was Baked Oatmeal.
It is a nourishing, well-rounded breakfast dish everyone will pretty much love. You can leave out the nuts if allergic, and throw in whatever fruit you want, dried or fresh, from blueberries to cranberries to peaches, depending on what is in season or available. This recipe is credited to Jennifer Segal, from her blog, Once Upon a Chef.
My second recipe, for Baked Wings, is one our son Jay found on the internet, and it is our go-to instead of ordering in. And it's easy! 15 minutes prep, 1 hour in the fridge; and 45 minutes to bake. I would double this recipe, because you can't have too many wings (if you are an omnivore like us). Try these for the Super Bowl.

Terry Lynn's Critters
Allow us to introduce the magician of critter care, Terry Lynn Kendall. She is living her life's dream of operating a "dog vacay" service, and it shows on her face.
|
| | Terry Lynn loves all critters! |
Terry Lynn is passionate about her dogs who come to play and be loved while owners are at work or on vacay themselves, and she also goes to homes to do full home care for dogs and cats. Her philosophy is best summed up in a few words: NO-PENS BOARDING!
The dogs have a safe and happy environment where they can interact with other dogs, be played with by Terry and other humans, go out for a run if they are athletic dogs (Terry is a runner also) and always have fresh water and food as appropriate.

What a client says:
"My dog Toby has been going to Terry since he was a pup (for 5 years now). I tell him he is going to see friends and he gets excited! When we get in the car he knows the way to Terry's house and can't wait to get there. He comes home tired but never has he come home dehydrated or sick, which if often what happens when dogs are in kennels. Terry is an incredible woman, she is strong and follows her dreams. Having a doggie petsitting business is one of her dreams. She loves the animals in her care as if they are her own."
Give Terry Lynn a call at (610) 925-3948 to discuss your pet's needs! Or stop by and visit at 108 Old Kennett Rd, Kennett Square, PA.
