One Cold Room
woman_cold_tissue.jpg
Does your home have one room that's always cold? Is there very little air flow from the heating grill, even when it is fully open? The culprit may be a heating supply duct that's been closed.

In the basement, find the main warm-air supply duct, which originates directly above the furnace. Often this is a rectangular duct running down the center of the basement. It may branch off into smaller circular ducts serving individual room registers.

Where the round duct attaches to the rectangular main, look for evidence of a duct damper: a wing nut around the end of a quarter-inch threaded rod. At the end of the rod, you'll see a screwdriver slot.

If this slot is perpendicular to the small round duct, the damper is closed. If the slot is parallel to the duct, the damper is open. You can loosen the wing nut and change the position of the damper. Then secure it by retightening the wing nut.

If opening the damper solves the problem, great. If the room is still cold, you may need to partially close other dampers to direct more air to the cold room. Often, dampers fit loosely, and even when fully closed, they can leak a lot of air.

Along the Welcome Trail
I am one of those New Year's Resolutions' types, thinking about them as soon as Christmas is over.  Yes, I often break them, but I make myself put some effort into thinking seriously about positive changes I want to make.  So here's my list to maybe help you get thinking about yours:

1.  I probably won't get organized.  Once or twice a year my desk will be clean and papers will be filed-that's my commitment.  I will never have all my contacts properly entered in Salesforce, and I will probably continue to grab a handful of papers on my way out the door and make phone calls and put notes on those papers. I live by my unfiled stacks.  I understand myself well enough to finally forgive me for working in spurts, for starting late and ending late, for not quitting when others are off enjoying themselves because they have more regular work habits.  So that's my first resolution:  forgive myself every day for being the frail human being I am.
2.  Much as I love to cook, since I start my workday so late, dinner will still probably be around 8 p.m., though certain male household members (who cling to old-school traditions) would prefer dinner at 5.  So I resolve to enjoy my hobby more on weekends and have fabulous meals ready to heat at five-ish. And I will invite more people to join us for late meals, so I can substantiate my position.
3.  I resolve to clean out my inbox and unsubscribe from all kinds of stuff some folks think I should enjoy receiving daily.  You may have a resolution similar to this.
4.  I have already resolved to make the bed daily, a new habit for me of late.  It's going well, so I get two points for that one.
5.  I resolve to get more massages in 2016 than I did in 2015.  Two or more will get me there. I love massages.  Why do I deny myself?  I resolve to answer this question in 2016 while I am on the table.
6.  I resolve to nag Bob to use his new Fitbit and to possibly nag me into more exercise as the new fitness program director.  It's on him now.
7.  I resolve to be a better communicator.  To this end, I have purchased four boxes of notepaper, as someone who was formerly quite committed to personal communications.  Don't you miss handwritten notes?  I might send you one this year.
8.  I resolve to be a reaching-out kind of person who is willing to go out of her way to lift someone's spirits up, and I resolve to do it by means other than a cheery Facebook message, Like, or quickie text, which in actuality doesn't create much lifting up of spirits at all, and may actually create a deficit of good spirits.
9.  I resolve to tie my daily activities more closely to my dreams by asking myself this question frequently:  "What's the goal?  Will this activity take me to my dream?  If not, what do I need to change right NOW?"  In fact, now that I have an exercise bike in my bedroom, a stair stepper in my office and an elliptical downstairs, maybe I will use my computer break moments on these various machines to focus on my relationship between dreams and goals.  Might be more useful to me than seeing who currently leads the political polls on an hour-by-hour basis.
10.  I am not going to discuss numbers of glasses of wine, cookies and chocolates stowed away, books read instead of working, overuse of heavy cream, etc.  That's my list except for this:  Last, I resolve to hold on to my belief that we CAN overcome the dehumanizing of our civil society, and when critical mass is reached, realize it was more fun before we built our lives around small electrical devices.  We actually sat around our dining room table and played a game together last night.  It was weird. . .and wonderful.  HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!  Now write your Resolutions.
Best, Anne

If Santa is the most common symbol associated with Christmas, then Baby New Year is the symbol most commonly associated with....you guessed it, New Year's! Baby New Year is often seen in a diaper, black top hat, and a sash showing the numbers of the new year. Myth states that he matures into an old man during the year.
Anne in the Kitchen

In January, comfort food is called for.  We don't even have an excuse, since my petunias haven't died yet, and we're sleeping under sheets with no blankets.  The fireplace gets used in five-minute increments, because after that we are all sweating.  Nevertheless, after all the rich holiday food we've consumed, we need some down-home comfort food for January (it might get cold yet, you know).  I have discovered something about Bob's mom's recipe here:  everyone loves their own meatloaf.  Think Quarter-Pounder.  It is delicious, and I even enjoy consuming the lemon slices.  It could even be a good company dish if your friends aren't the kind you need to impress with haute cuisine.

SMALL BUSINESS TIP OF THE MONTH:

A good marketing strategy immediately distinguishes your business from those of your competitors, and gives your customers a solid reason for choosing to do business with you.    A good strategy should be developed after considering the market, customer needs, the competition, and your business's relative strengths and weaknesses. Many small businesses try to be all things to all people ... which is really having no strategy at all!  Even if you do everything else right ... it will be much harder, if not impossible, to succeed in business if you don't have a decisive strategy!
