Save Your Back during Snow Season
snow-shovel.jpg
Oh no - we don't even like to think of the dreaded shoveling season BUT if you do have to shovel snow, here are some tips for saving your back any pain:

Stretch and Dress Warm
Appropriate stretching before shoveling snow reduces your chance of injury.
Dressing adequately for prolonged cold-weather exposure should be a no-brainer! Layer your clothing. Wear waterproof items and underclothing that wicks underneath your heavier clothes. Note that mittens trap warmth far more efficiently than gloves do.

Proper Biomechanics during Shoveling
Push snow, don't drag it. Choose a plastic shovel with a curved, adjustable handle, and spray a silicone product on the shovel blade. Hold the shovel by placing your hands about 12 to 18 inches apart, with one hand at the handle and the other closer to the blade. Use your leg muscles and contract your abdominal muscles each time you lift. As you dump snow out of your shovel, turn your entire body to face the spot where you intend to drop it. Avoid throwing snow over your shoulder or twisting your torso.

What to do if you suffer an injury
If you feel any pain or twinges in your back, stop immediately and rest.  Stretch again before attempting anymore shoveling.
Severe pain?  Get to your doctor.

What's New in Dentistry?

For over 130 years, the easiest and most effective way of eliminating pain during dental procedures has been the use of injectable local anesthetics.
Obviously, the anesthetic must be injected with a hypodermic needle.  Now, new technology is available that can take the pain and fear out of "the shot."

The DentalVibe is a hand held device that allows dentists to deliver local anesthesia virtually pain free.

The tip of the DentalVibe rests on the oral tissue adjacent to the injection site.  As its name implies, it vibrates those tissues, initiating the transmission
of nerve impulses toward the brain which are perceived as "vibration".   Meanwhile, the act of the injection itself also initiates nerve transmissions along a different set of slower nerve fibers which will be perceived as "pain" IF they reach the brain.  Both sets of nerves pass through the same junction boxes
on their way to the brain.  Because the "vibration" impulses travel on faster nerve fibers, they occupy the capacity of the junction box, effectively blocking the "pain" impulses at those  junction boxes for up to 98% of patients.

That's exciting news!  If you have put off needed treatment because of fear of the shot, give us a call at 610-696-9119.

Time for a Thorough Refrigerator Clean

Can you honestly remember the last time you completely emptied and cleaned your refrigerator?

Gather your tools: a large lined garbage can, a sink of soapy water, spray bottles of degreaser and window cleaner, and a lot of cleaning cloths. Clear the kitchen counters so you can sort and spread out food and containers. Most important, before you begin, turn your refrigerator off--and unplug it, too.

Start at the top. Remove everything from the top refrigerator shelf. Leftovers go directly into the garbage can. Open everything, and when it doubt, toss it out!

Plastic food storage containers are consigned to the dishwasher after a brief rinse. The shelf goes directly to the sink's soapy water. While it soaks off the grime, use your degreaser spray to clean the refrigerator's ceiling and walls down to the next shelf.

Wash the shelf, dry and replace it.

Work your way from top to bottom, and you'll build up enough steam to tackle the vegetable crisper and meat drawers.

Good luck!

It's the holiday season, and the mind turns to cookies.

This recipe I am about to share with you is one I snagged under duress about 30 or more years ago, when I tasted this spectacular cookie in a fine dining restaurant whose name shall not be revealed because it doesn't exist anymore.  The chef owner was so reluctant to give it to me that I had to cajole him into it by offering three of my best cutting-edge recipes and samples.  He made the reluctant exchange, and it has been my treasure ever since.  Funny thing, he doesn't even remember giving it to me-or getting my best sauce recipes.  It is so worth trying, that I hope you will do it and LIKE our Facebook page and tell me how you and your guests enjoyed the treats. I promise you it's special!  Since it involves both chocolate and butterscotch, you will not have to choose between one or the other flavor.  And it becomes a healthy recipe because it contains OATMEAL.  And we have now learned that butter won't make you fat, but sugar will.  I'd like to think brown sugar is better for you than white sugar, wouldn't you?  Good, because you'll be using it.

Along the Welcome Trail

Another mass shooting in California.  It's horrifying to think that yet another terrible thing has happened by someone spewing hate and violence.  As we enter the season of Peace on Earth and Good Will Toward Men (and Women), let us find new ways to be kind to one another, to take time to personally engage, and to notice if someone is lonely or hurting.  It is certainly what we aim to do when we risk getting doors slammed or encountering unreceptive people, but it is our mission to reach out and connect personally and actually welcome someone into their new home and community.  We thank you who have taken a little time out of that very busy period setting up your new household, starting new jobs, finding the right restaurant or caterer for an important event, finding the right school, the petsitter, the pediatrician, the dentist, the guy who's going to plow the driveway and cut the lawn.  We want to smooth the way for you and help you find good sources, but most of all, we want to help you feel you just moved to a friendly place.  And let us know how we can help you further.   We know all the good businesses in town.  Best, Anne

HISTORY LIVES ALONG THE WELCOME TRAIL

In 1760, on his fifteenth birthday, Casimir Pulaski's father told him to saddle up and go with him to fight the Russians and the Prussians.
Born 1745, Casimir Pulaski had only 34 years to help reorganize the world.
1776 found Pulaski outlawed by Russia and Prussia so he took off for Paris where Ben Franklin talked him into supporting the colonies against England.
In 1777, he arrived in Philadelphia, eager for revolutionary action with General George Washington.
His tactics were so effective at the Battle of Brandywine on Sept 11, 1777 that Congress appointed him Brigadier-General in charge of Four Horse Brigades.
Washington was so impressed with Pulaski that he had Congress put him at the head of the American cavalry and he became the "Father of American Cavalry".
Pulaski was a wealthy Polish noble man. He used his own money to equip and feed the troops.
On to Little Egg Harbor! Then south to Charlestown, SC.  On October 9, 1779, Pulaski was shot off his horse by cannon fire and died three days later on October 15, 1779, age 34.
I am privileged to share this tribute to a courageous man,
R. Pounds

His historical marker stands on Baltimore Pike near the Brandywine Battle Field.

SMALL BUSINESS TIP OF THE MONTH:

Thinking success can catapult your career or business ahead and make you more effective in all kinds of different situations, from dealing with people, to concentrating on analytical issues, to developing creative ideas.

Thinking failure can stop you cold, like the icy moat or cold stone walls of a medieval castle, and make you less effective in dealing with people, less able to focus on your work, and less likely to develop creative ideas.
