Wee Watch
November/December 2012

Greetings!

We survived the hustle and bustle of September, back to school and back to work.   The weather has become cooler and we are searching through our closets for warm sweaters and light jackets, while our flip flops and open toed shoes have retired to the shoe box until next year.

I hope everyone enjoyed their turkey dinner with their family and that you were able to reflect on all the things that you have to be thankful for. October was an interesting month with hurricane Sandy blowing through our cities and towns.  The children also got to go trick or treating and dress up for Halloween!

Scavenger Hunt:  Late fall is a great time to spend quality time together with the family both indoors and out. It's a great time to do an autumn scavenger hunt! Make a list of items that you would typically find in autumn like pine cones, red leaves, brown leaves, a rock, a twig, and then take your list to the park or a trail and work together to find them. It's a great way to spend quality time together, get exercise and learn about nature.

Bubble Play:  Did you know that bubbles last longer in cooler weather!   You can buy bubbles at the store or make your own at home. Children learn a lot by playing with bubbles. They can experiment with different objects to make bubbles and observe what the differences are. Try using pipe cleaners, a turkey baster, even their own hands! They learn to compare sizes and shapes and use vocabulary to discuss what's happening all while using gross and fine motor skills to run after and pop the bubbles. Don't forget the camera because this is sure to be a photo opportunity.

On the cooler days of December there are many opportunities to make family memories from the comfort of your living room. Why not grab some blankets and get cozy while reading your child his favourite books, you can even introduce your child to some of your favourites from when you were a child. Start a family games night and play board games or do puzzles. You can even use this time to make a scrapbook of family memories of the past year. Use photos from family vacations, birthdays and holidays, you can even include any of your child's keepsake art in the scrapbook. Imagine the fun of looking back at this project in years to come.

December can be a busy month as it is the time of year for getting together with family and friends, shopping and celebrating the holidays. Take time to breathe and enjoy these moments as you are creating lasting memories for your children.

Have a safe and happy holiday season and all the best in 2013.
