Starting Your Own Grant Writing Business, Part 1

By Bill Carruthers, GrantProse CEO

Congratulations to GrantProse client, the Lumber River Council of Governments, for securing a YouthBuild grant for $1.1 million from the U.S. Department of Labor, which awarded nearly $72 million in grants to 68 programs across 33 states and the District of Columbia to provide academic and occupational skill training for at-risk youth. Lumber River's Project GreenBuild will provide intensive academic instruction, construction training, jobsite experience, and leadership development for 70 youth in the communities of Laurinburg and Maxton. Participants will be exposed to the principles of building science, energy efficient construction, and home systems. DOL's announcement indicates that Lumber River was the only entity in North Carolina to win a grant in this round of YouthBuild funding.

Nonprofit News
Profiles, accomplishments

With eight military bases, North Carolina is home to more than 760,000 veterans, many who leave the military with special health and employment needs. The Carolina Veterans Support Group (CVSG) is a recently formed 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to reducing marginalization of returning veterans and assisting in their transition to civilian life. Founded in 2010 by Pat Lloyd, a disabled Vietnam veteran, CVSG aims to address the needs of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with service-related difficulties. In North Carolina alone:

  • 13,188 veterans are being treated for PTSD
  • 51,000 still await disability claims to be processed
  • 1,659 are homeless
"CVSG's primary objectives are to provide marginalized veterans with care and transition programs administered by peer volunteers at a proposed 'Pride in Self' campus, and to establish a comprehensive database of veteran-related resources, services, and links," states CVSG spokesman Jan Jacobson.

Prepared to give each veteran individualized, long-term support, CVSG is staffed by veterans and volunteers who will provide help with resumes and interviewing, training and finding employment, receiving medical care and education, and securing food, clothing, and shelter.

CVSG also educates the public on difficulties veterans face, including delayed veteran benefits and health issues, as well as veterans' need for housing opportunities, education, and employment. For more information, visit CVSG's website or email the organization at [email protected]. We wish CVSG success in its worthy endeavors.
