Preparing to Write Proposals

Part 2: Know Your Needs

By Rita Lewis

You've been shopping grants for months. You finally spot the perfect one for your organization. It fits your mission and would fund an important project in your agency. You leap into action, a spring in your step and dollar signs in your eyes.

Days later, you realize you might not be able to submit this proposal by the deadline; time is too short. You learn the grant writer's lesson: The more legwork you do in advance, the more time you'll have to write the proposal.

In Part 1 of this three-part series, we discussed the first step of preparation: Knowing yourself -- your organization's mission, accomplishments, and fundraising policies -- and getting acquainted with the funding source.

Here, we discuss the concept and the importance of need. Need is at the heart of every grant proposal: You seek funding to fulfill a need, and agencies award funding to address societal needs.

The NC Rural Center will conduct a series of workshops on how to transform communities into places that youth and young adults can thrive. As part of its New Generation Initiative, the first workshop will be held Nov. 27 at the Rural Center and by video conferencing at five additional locations across the state. Visit the Rural Center's website for additional information on the workshop series, which addresses concerns that rural communities face about their younger populations. Participants must register by Nov. 21.

Members of youth-serving organizations are invited to register for StepItUp2Thrive, a free half-day workshop focused on research-based strategies to help young people be successful. Sponsored by Youthrive, the Raleigh Promise and Cooperative Extension's 4-H Youth Development Program, the workshop will be held Dec. 11 at the McKimmon Center in Raleigh, 9 am - 1 pm. Space is limited; interested participants must register on Youthrive by Dec. 3. The event includes lunch and a networking opportunity.

News you can use

As part of its New Generation Initiative, the NC Rural Center surveyed more than 15,000 rural youth in the state, followed up with focus groups, and examined statistical data on the well-being of children, youth, and young adults in rural North Carolina. Findings are presented in this downloadable PDF of Young and Rural: A Snapshot of Rural North Carolina's New Generation. The report focuses on the aspirations of rural youth, their concerns for a future in rural North Carolina, and demographic and economic trends.

The Rural Center has also published a guide to nonprofit and government resources for engaging youth, including grant, scholarship, volunteer, and networking opportunities. Visit the Rural Center's New Generation Initiative webpage for information on the Youth Engagement Resource Guide, available in print and online.
